Distance's debut album "My Demons" has been recently released via Planet μ and has to be rated as the best and most consistent album the Dubstep scene has seen to date, as it covers the genre's whole spectrum from ambient'ish athmospheric depths via beat abstractions to harsh, more industrial flavored tunes but keeps the focus on what is regarded as Dubstep without the attempt of forcefully squeezing any foreign elements into sound structures they don't fit into. This is not about "keeping things real" or whatever kind of purism, but as one might agree there haven't been many "crossover" tracks out there even worth an average rating compared to what their producers use to serve when they stick to their favorite genre without being experimental. Tracks to check: "Weigh Down" and "Ska" for tearing up dancefloors and "Tuning" for Source Direct- / Photek-influenced darkness.

Skynet, better known for his more technoid Drum'n'Bass-productions, has put out his Dubstep-tracks "Swamp" and "Isolate" as cat.no. 008 of Argon Records and proves quality in that, too. While "Swamp" comes with an epic, dark'ish and hypercold sci-fi flava accompanied by characteristic, ancient drum sounds, "Isolate" is a deep, athmospheric tune that'll probably fit best as last record played near sunrise after a long Dubstep night out. Name it Ambient Halfstep.

Neu Rave meets Dubstep is a fusion that no-one ever dreamt of to be good, but what Sebastian's Remix of Klaxons' tune "Golden Skans" released on the french imprint Because serves is pure dancefloor devastation. Dubby halftime vibes meets ravey strings meets hyper-melancholic Neu Rave Vocals meets effect loaden moshpit sequences... a melting pot of sounds that seems to be nothing but a fuckin' anthem. Get that, buy blindfolded. No questions, please.

Kev Martin's SpeedHall / Industrial Dancehall outlet The Bug comes up with a new 12" named "Jah War" on Ninja Tune featuring Flowdan, that seems to be more influenced by Grime than any of their former productions. Two versions featured here - one harsh, brutal and ultra-compressed, while the flipside - rumours talk about a remix by a well-known Dubstep / Grime producer - seems to be more chilled, but still thrilling. Hunt down quickly as this single is quite limited and will be sought after soon.

Cat.No. 028 of Pharmacom Records is Sascha Müller's "Last Train To Radio Ga Ga", a one track piece that is defo not longplay format but what once was called E.P. / Extended Play as the whole tune runs for 26+ a bit minutes. Musicwise to be filed under the flag of Experimental Ambient the kinda soundtrack'ish composition consists of a basic surface noise structure, deep organic pulses, echoing bleeps and voice snippets, which somehow remind me of classic Single Cell Orchestra-releases, and can be regarded as a remiscence to a time, when Ambient Electronics was new and fresh as a genre and seen as a totally relevant part of what once was Techno - see this term as a synonym for the whole spectrum of Electronic Dance Music here. Although these days seem to be gone to date, as Electronica sales are on a low level and there seem to be only a few Techno-youths interested in non-dancefloor, there's is still a scene / place for that and those who remember labels as Pete Namlook's FAX or similar should not miss this one for real.

Bound Zound’s - a.k.a. Demba, which is one of the three main members of the infamous german Ragga-outfit Seeed – new single "Louder" has been put on promo circuit recently via Island / Universal Domestic and is about to set Minimal- and Housefloors on fire as it features remixes by at least two of the hippest producers of today: Martin Buttrich as well as Henrik Schwarz. Both as hype as hype can be they deliver what the dancefloors is longing for – stripped down, but still groovy, fitting for the early hours as well as for primetime abuse or latenite workouts, very on point an defo not featuring any unnecessary “schnickschnack” as u name it in german language. Good tools, so check em tunes out.

Makina Girgir's "The Spell" is set for release on april 20th as cat.no. 008 of Das Drehmoment Records , a nice 5 track piece of cold Synth- meets ElectroPop of the new style. Fittting for Wave-/Indie-/ElectroPop-venues as well as for real clubs and dancefloors the french outfit Makina Girgir is about to hit a wide audience with their mixture of hyper-clean beats and ethereal strings / sound arrangements plus tiny little melodies appearing here and there. Ask yr local dealer to hunt this one down for u.

Exile On Mainstream are about to relase the official debut album of a two piece band named Dyse on march 23rd. The album of the same title as the band's name contains a whole of eight tracks, which are musically stuck somewhere between Alternative, solid Rock and angry but still witty SkatePunk attitude similar to what bands like Mucky Pub delivered somewhen in the 90s to their audience, providing a well-balanced mixture of ass kicking, funky basslines, thrilling shouts and some stop-and-go wizzardy for musical eggheads and intellectuals, which are quite used to structures not being consistent with what the mainstream expects from a song. Although this is not meant to be the biggest hit of the year albumwise for Exile On Mainstream it might work quite well for all those out there being up for some rather special and interesting music, so don't miss to check it out.

One album yet to be filed as essential for April 2007 is Neongrau's upcoming release "Spam N Space" on Das Drehmoment, at least for all those appreciating a perfect fusion of SynthPop-influenced, old-styled Minimal Wave and contemporary Electro sounds. Having teared up dancefloors with their first release on LoFi Stereo, which included a massive Patrick Pulsinger Remix of their anthemic "Hi Level Slacker" - featured as original version and updated v.109 on "Spam N Space" as well - their longplay debut is set to follow the same paths and to gain similar success as it'll match with the musical taste of those following the SynthWave movement since the early days of Fad Gadget, The Normal and their company as well as those being too young to have seen the cold, glamourous, cocaine-induced scene back then but being attracted and introduced by it through newer musical outfits. When will songs like "Taste In Taste" enter the realm of mainstream radio rotation ? Hope it won't take too long as quality music like has to be introduced to the youth of today - soon! Rated 11 points out of 10 and one of the top albums in 2007 to date. Not convinced yet ? Check them out on myspace...

Super Six Goodies have reached their 25th release now, which is the provided by a project named Bloodmakesnoise. Exploring the darker side of electronic music with their album "Off Substance", especially Wonky Experimental Techno clearly influenced by Broken Rhythm Electronics as well as dark Acid-driven PsyTek, the bunch of three come up with an interesting and intense journey through their sound universe that might be even more fascinating delivered live on stage as some tracks seem to be only short excerpts of a longer jam-like session.

Straight from the Ghetto - News on HipHop, pt. 22

Chamillionare’s tune “Not a Criminal” featuring Kelis is put on promo circuit by Universal Motown right now and about to hype some dancefloors with dark beats on a danger zone tip, tight flows and a kinda sing-along chorus that gets that tune an anthemic character that’ll surely be appreciated by many HipHop headz out there rollin‘ with the new school.

The next 12” taken from Nas‘ “HipHop Is Dead”-album out on DefJam is “Can’t Forget About You” featuring Chrisette Michele on mic duties coming up with weird 60‘s flava alongside the man himself, dropping his –once again – HipHop-conscious rhymes on top of phat, laid back beats and deep samples that sound like they’ve been taken off sweet love’n’moonlight romance movie from back in the very days. Interestingat first sight, but finally too candy pop for me.

Timbaland’s new album “Shock Value” is about to drop in March on Blackground Records / Interscope and the first single taken out of it is on promo circuit these days. “Give It To Me” features the vocal talents of Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake on one tracks which is defo a rare thing to be found these days. Based on typical minimalistic beats the pair of two comes up with a grounded vision of Pop meets HipHop / DigiSoul which is quality when it comes to mass appealing music but a bit too sweet and smooth for my personal taste.

Org's "Mechanized E.P." ist cat.no. 029 of Pharmcom Records, a four tracker of dark Downbeat- / Instrumental HipHop-science that once would have been filed as a mixture between Illbient and early B12-works. Perfect b-boying soundtrack for ultra-advanced dancefloors and a grade A recommendation to those who appreciated Genlog's more experimental album "Rosa Lauschen" back in 1998.

If you can stand the Tekno test and if you are still up for some puristic bangers providing the essence of MonoAcid-influenced Tekkno you should check out Sascha Müller's "Schlachtfest E.P.", which is cat.no. 001 on the fresh label Säurebad Records. Raw, analogue and uncut tracks, just designed to kick your fuckin' tripped out ass. 100% quality.

Remember the term ClubHouse used for the deep pumpin‘ workouts served by the likes of Robin S. and similar artists? Not too far from that is the newest outlet on Hed Kandi / Ministry Of Sound - Booty Luv’s “Boogie 2Nite”. Discoid sounds, a bassline that gets your ass moving and glitzy female vocals spreading nothing but positive vibes. A good tune for real, although it clearly aims at more commercial dancefloors these days.

“What Is Control?” – this question is clearly asked by Alexi Delano’s newest 12” on Audiomatique Recordings , which is the labels catalogue number 021. While the title track is to be filed as a non-compromising dancefloor banger of the more minimal kind, referring to a jackin‘ Chicago’esque vibe, the flipside under the name of “Not My Enemy” heads for a deeper momentum. Jackin‘ though, but flavored by alienated, flickering string sequences and a kinda shuffling main theme this is recommended for late night abuse rather than for primetime workouts.

Phonique’s tune “John” is the latest output on Steve Bug’s Dessous Recordings – cat.no. 068 - , a quite classic tribute to the qualities of oldskool House – the deeper kind we talkin‘ here. Nice and smooth accompanied by a pumping but still not overambitious bassline melting into an ever growing track that keeps the dancefloor crowd moving until forever. On the flip there’s “John” reworked by Mr. V& William “Reelsoul” Rodriguez which manage to stay in at the deep end while adding a slightly funky attitude. to the whole tune.

One to keep an eye upon, at least for all lovers of Reggae- / Dub-influenced sounds is Tiger HiFi’s new 12” named “Toop Toop” which delivers relaxed vibes for the upcoming summer, a remix by Bozoo Bajou plus a funny Reggae-version of Michael Jackson’s uber-hit “Smooth Criminal” wich happens to be the very best track out of all versions served. On whitelabel promo circuit only these days..

SJ Esau's new album "Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse" is piped for release on the infamous Anticon.-imprint on March 30th, a twelve track journey through different shades of what might be named AntiFolk / Indietronica / AvantRock or whatever seems to be fitting for an intimate amalgamation of classic Folk (song) structures and typical, foggy, Anticon.'esque beats close to the borders of what once was known as TripHop. Nice homelistening stuff that defo sweats a certain form of dark melancholia that'll well fit with red vine-induced campfire sessions - exclude the funny uptempo songs "Halfway Up The Pathway" from this, please.

Hamburg-based label Audiolith Records is about to release Plemo's forthcoming longplayer "Exzessexpress" on March 13th, which features 12 tracks right between Electro, Pop and a trashy, bleepy, high energy Disco attitude and a certain amount of sparkling glitz. Their great uber-hit "Flashlight" known from a former 7" release is to be found on the album as well as a tribute to Saalschutz's "Richtige DJs" named "Top 40 DJs" amongst other great tunes of which one is paying respect to Mrs. Madonna Ciccone as her voice seems to be used in the tracks intro and is meant to cause serious brockout in gay discotheques, small underground nightclubs and Indie pubs as well. Although not made for a mainstream audience all tunes are well accessible for those being freshly introduced to the sound of Plemo and a sureshot for all lovers of what might be called ElectroPunk. File under: Heavy as hell NoiseRock. This is what the press release says about Unsane's forthcoming album "Visqueen", scheduled for release on Ipecac in early April 2007, perfectly fusing subtle melodies, fuzzing noise and the furious anger of down to earth Hardcore within eleven tracks. The New Jersey-based bunch of three - original grassroot member Chris Spencer, Dave Curran and Vinny Signorelli - generates an ultra-massive wall of uneasy noise and distorted guitars, accompanied by a beserking drumset that stamps every resistance into the ground as if it was no more than nothing. Music for Mad Max-scenario's, post-war confrontations and decaying societies.
