Mille Plateaux Launches Cluster

Just a quick snap from the relaunched Mille Plateaux-stable. Upcoming in July is their new sublabel CLUSTER which is meant to be their new outlet for releases fitting in the Ambient-/ Drone-sector of electronic music. Starting with a digital only release of an artist named Gultskra Artikler the first physical - that means CD - release is to come soon as well.

Sanex - Oure Life [Super 6 Goodies 079]

Fresh on Meaniebar is Sanex' two tracker "Oure Life". Whilst the title track is on a Rave-flavored, energy fueled, ElectroHouse-tip and surely about to set dancefloors on fire "So Many Stars" featuring Olegy on vocal duties is more athmospheric and slightly trancey but still thrilling and well functional. Nice one.

Ohrchitekt - Racing Start [Pharmacom Records 067]

Ohrchitekt is back on Pharmacom Records, coming up with his 15 track album "Racing Start" that's jam-packed with excursions in broken, experimental electronics very likely to be well appreciated by fans of the 2007-gone Quatermass-imprint and its parent label Sub Rosa as well as related labels. The range of music featured on this one is too wide for detailed description but includes dancefloor tunes as well as experimental listening, influences from Drill'n'Bass, Glitch and some humour. Defo a nice one for Electronica lovers.

Happy Buddha [Ayia Napa Music / ZYX]

All fans of decent Lounge / Downtempo music are recommended to check out the fresh "Happy Buddha" compilation put on the circuit via Ayia Napa Music / ZYX, containing a bunch of 23 tracks spread over 2 CD's and providing approximately 2 hours of listening pleasure. Having a look at the booklet one recognizes that all titles have been licensed from the Hamburg based imprint Lounge Records and its sister labels El Muto and Legere who are well appreciated for their high quality sounds since day dot - in terms of this compilation we're talking a period from 1998 to 2010, a twelve years range that's represented by artists like Rivera Rotation, Boca 45, Vincenzo & Rivera, Jettricks and many others. If these names sound familiar to any of you, you're very likely to enjoy this compilation - at home, on the beach, in your car or wherever there's need for some aural excitement.

eVADE - Marlin [Pharmacom Records 066]

eVADE is back on Pharmacom Records providing two new tunes. Whilst "Oly" is a quite a humorous breed of Downbeat and Electronica with a funny bassline and loads of positive attitude the title track "Marlin" goes down the route of anthemic, Electronica-driven Breakbeat / Drum'n'Bass with a funny twist. The better track out of these two for sure.

6502kru - Basics [Super 6 Goodies 078]

A fresh addition to the Super 6 Goodies-stable is the project 6502kru which are coming up with three track named "Minimal001", "Minimal002" and "Minimal005" on this one. As one might already guess from the tracks names these are all about so-called MinimalTechno, very basic, not overly exciting at all but well fitting and functional for afterhours all over the place.

Paranoid Definition - Snow Tales [Pharmacom Records 065]

Fresh on Pharmacom Records as their cat.no. 065 is this three track E.P. which will be loved by those liking what's stored in the "Unformatted Breaks"-section of the french specialist distributor Toolbox Records. This means: experimental, but still dancefloor friendly Electro & Breakbeat, influenced by Industrial, Rave, Acid, not to be categorized due to a raw leftfield attitude and most likely to be bashed out by Freetekno soundsystems or at underground squat parties. Well functional on BigBeat-floors, too.

Duality - Da Hood / The Wood [Chillzone Records]

Another two-tracker provided by Chillzone Records meant to please those longing for aural relaxation. Whilst "Da Hood" is on a TripHop / Downbeat / Balearic tip and features some nice scratch action, epic strings and nice melodies "The Wood" can be filed as classical balearic and beatless Ambient perfect for Ibiza sundowns. A bit of kitsch included as well.

Iris Dee Jay - Give It A Try EP [Super 6 Records 053]

Responsible for cat.no. 053 of Super 6 Records is Iris Dee Jay, which delivers some slightly commercial sounding crossover between Stadium Techno and ElectroHouse with the original title track. Remixes are provided by Alfonso Padilla, Sascha Müller and DJ Ghent who are all picking up on that vibe caused by the special use of vocals in that track on different musical levels but none of them can really succeed. Neither can the original mix so this one is rated average.

Mike De Greif - Radiomacher [Super 6 Goodies 077]

Fresh on Super 6 Goodies is Mike De Greif's six track E.P. "Radiomacher" which will be well appreciated by all those invlvd in rave culture from it's heydays in the early 90s. To be found are Hardtechno/Hardcore crossovers, banging Acid, epic Trance for huge areas and other maximum Rave tunes for ultimate oldskool brockout. Recommended 4 sure.

Andreas Akwara - Erwachet [Scare Records /iM Electronic]

It's been quite a while since I've found a pure Ambient album sitting in my P.O. box waiting for a review but then Andreas Akwara's "Erwachet" came across, which is meant to be released on July 16th via Scare Records / iM Electronic. Although Mr. Akwara's work has been mostly renown within the US-american Ambient scene so far and gathered more fans by even entering the overseas Ambient charts with his album "Solar Eclipse" it is clear that his new longplayer "Erwachet" is about to be appreciated worldwide. So what's to be found? All tracks - "Erwachet Satz I - IX" - are very likely to be described as classic, sometimes even a bit esoteric Ambient, deep, calm, beatless, string loaden and at least 100% stress free, apart from a few short bits in which gnarling, manipulated bass sounds are working as background counterparts to the sweet and peaceful athmosphere delivered. Recommended to die-hard fans and true Ambient headz as well as to those who love the sound of original Synth masters like Jean-Michel Jarre and related artists.

Phonique - Kissing Strangers [Dessous Recordings Promo]

On the circuit since june 07th is Phonique's latest album outing "Kissing Strangers", released by Steve Bug's very own Dessous Recordings and the third studio album for the man his parents and real life mates know better as Michael Vater. But although the first single seemed to announce a huge longplayer listening to "Kissing Strangers" is in fact disappointing as Phonique went Pop. Not talking about a credible artist selling out but what's to be found here is a melting pot of Pop, Lounge and House featuring not only a few tracks well fitting in so-called various artist lifestyle compilation CD's, TV adds or average beach club / terrace selections or whatever. If that's Phonique's musical vision in 2010 it's well fine for him but it's far from what I'd expected being released on Dessous Recordings and far from the musical qualities his club tracks provided in the past. Not my cup of tea at all.

Maetrik - Gliding Blind E.P. [Audiomatique Recordings 041 Promo]

Not long after his latest release on Audiomatique Recordings, which was the labels cat.no. 039, Maetrik is back on the label again with his "Gliding Blind E.P.". Unleashing three tracks dark'ish, pumping and driven by loads of haunting athmosphere, made for those primetime hours when time seems to stretch out endless. Possibly well working in places like the legendary Berghain club in Berlin or other venues which people attend just to get lost in music. To quote one of Howie B.'s greatest tunes ever "...this is about smoke and sweat and beats". Get it.

Marmion - Schöneberg 2010 [Grand Casino 011 Promo]

It's been in 1993 - yes, that's 17 years now - when Marmion released his uber-classic hit "Schöneberg" on Hamburg's Superstition Records, a track that went straight through the roof of Germanys and the worlds young Techno / Trance scene and even now never sounds dated after such a long time. Now new remixes are available via Grand Casino featuring a few of todays most respected producers at the controls. On the A-side we see DJ Hell providing a rework which is soundwise quite close to the direction of his latest album "Teufelswerk", driving and trademark slightly distorted high and mid frequencies. NYC's Abe Duque is the next one to serve an ever rolling and hypnotic re-lick for darker hours on the dancefloor whilst Donnacha Costello totally deconstructs the original track, takes a few strings from the classic and comes up with a deep Armchair Techno piece that could be easily taken off his recent album "Before We Say Goodbye". Mr. Costello wins for making the biggest creative effort and transferring "Schöneberg" into new realms.

Phonique feat. Ian Whitelaw - Our Time Our Chance [Dessous Recordings 096 Promo]

Taken off Phonique's recent album "Kissing Strangers" put on the circuit via Dessous Recordings these days is "Our Time Our Chance", a first 12" featuring the vocal talent of singer / songwriter Ian Whitelaw stepping apart from his usual path and serving 100% - just like he had been invlvd in contemporary Vocal House forever. Coze this is what "Our Time Our Chance" in its original version is all about - House music, shimmering sounds, a deep bassline and on top of all this: Ian's voice. So if you've mistaken the term Vocal House as synonym for cheap, cheesy stuff so far "Our Time Our Chance" is about to tell you a different story - quality music for decent venues, no matter if we're talking the close to the original remix version provided by Andre Lodemann or the original album take, both to be found on the A side. On the flip we see Georg Von Dem Bussche & Steffen Berkhahn - better known as Wahoo - providing an additional remix that might be seen more controversial due to it's heavy piano workout, discoid overall attitude and weird vocal processings - a version that will be appreciated by specialists and fans of the Wahoo aesthetics only while most of the DJs will rather stick to the A side.

Beto Narme - Sigment Dots (Figment Dots)

This little excerpt was flying in via email from the now relaunched Mille Plateaux-stable. Obviously I don't agree with it being tagged as Dubstep, Grime or Breakstep because Electronica fits better and - more important - just having some echoic elements and some kind of broken beat doesn't necessarily make a tune fitting in in one of these genres but I do agree with it being quality music that I'd love to hear out on the dancefloor. What do you guys think?

Xenia Beliayeva - Satellite

This melancholic, dark'ish piece of Electro-/SynthPop named "Satellite" is taken off Xenia Beliayeva's latest album "Ever Since" which has been recently released via Berlin-based imprint Shitkatapult. Defo an album that will be appreciated by clubheads as well as by lovers of Wave and other dark music, a cross culture phenomenon that we already saw happening in Anthony Rother's "Popkiller 2" this year.

Further news have it, that Shitkatapult are about to release Sid Le Rock's new album "Tout Va Bien" in the end of this month - a 12 track piece pushing boundaries between epic, but partly experimental Tech-/ElectroHouse and Stadium ElectroRock. One for the masses of festival goers which might call it a banger.

The Dance Inc.: Free Download Album !!!

It's been nearly eight months now since The Dance Inc., one of my favorite bands hailing from the Audiolith-stable, have officially split, eight months in which their final album was stuck on their harddrives unheard and unreleased. Now it's available as free download via Audiolith as the labels cat. no. 083, a final salute from those guys who've been responsible for the first ever Audiolith-release and a lot of great Synth-/ElectroPop-tunes.

baze.djunkiii charts 06/2010

Constantly thinking about ways to fit more information about quality music into these pages I think its time to start a new monthly column to let all you trainspotters know more about my favorite tracks / records. Short descriptions, a few words or just a link if the specific release ahs already been reviewed here.

01. dBridge - Love Hotel / The Dim Light [Exit Records 022]
Deep Listening Music is the best term to describe this double A-sided 12", others might prefer the term Electronica. Still a surprise that in 2010 the most important output in this genre is provided by a former member of the Drum'N'Bass supergroup Bad Company. Of which I've never been a big fan to be honest.

02. Florence & The Machine - You Got The Love *Jamie XX Rework feat. The XX [FLOXX 001]
The original tune by Candi Staton is a classic and it's not easy reworking such a great tune. This time it's been reworked for good - quite unclassifiable stylewise, somewehat in between the spirits of Broken House / Phuzion, deepest basslines and helium driven vocal cutups. Makes ppl feel good due to it's weirdness.

03. Pupa Jim - I Am A Robot [Jahtari]
DigiDub / Electronic Reggae with a funny attitude. Weird processed lyrics about being a robot, feels like a novelty record and will be smashing up dances for sure.

04. Rude Kid - Electric / Screwdriver [No Hats No Hoods 011]
Rude Kid exploring terrains between Niche and instrumental Future Grime on this 12" being released on the Ruff Sqwad-related label. Both tunes are bangers that need no further description.

05. House Of Trax Vol. 4 [Trax Records / Rush Hour]
Features two versions of Maurice Joshua's "I Got A Big Dick" plus Blackman's "Beat That Bitch With A Bat". Classic dirty Chicago Acid House for those who know the score. One needs this.

06. Sven Tasnadi - Tell Me Again [Poker Flat Recordings 113 Promo]
See review for details...

07. Langenberg - Past Present E.P. [Dessous Recordings 097 Promo]
See review for details...

08. Madteo & Sensational [Lanquid 001]
Some might call it Beatdown, some will include it in their Cosmic selection. Ultra slow House music featuring Mutant HipHop pioneer Sensational on microphone duty which provides his first proper performance after a string a weak releases throughout the last months.

09. Nutone - Set Me Free [Hospital Records 165]
On the flip - the original A side - one finds a Drum'n'Bass-tune named "Hyper Hyper" which is full on bullshit. But the deep, melodic and slightly trancey Dubstep tune "Set Me Free" on the flip is a true masterpiece.

10. Trentemøller - Into The Great Wide Yonder [In My Room Promo]
See review for details...
