Mikolaj Trzaska / John Edwards / Mark Sanders - Not So Late / Because It Happens [Gusstaff Records]

A live album on Gusstaff Records. Released on the ever active and ever growing Polish label very recently on June 12th, 2k26 is "Not So Late / Because It Happens", a full on improvisational longplay affair recorded at London's Cafe OTO on August 5th, 2k25. With Mikolaj Trzaska on alto sax and clarinet, John Edwards on double bass and Mark Sanders on drums the trio follows a practice deliberately described as live composition rather than improvisation over the course of nine pieces and a total runtime of roughly 62 minutes, opening with the screaming foreground sax rides and unstoppable maelstrom of hyperdense thundering drum rolls of "Running Lose" which are setting the pace for things to come like the rolling complex drumstorm and certainly funky bass lines of "Written By" which lay the foundation for raw Jazz improvisation continued also in the subsequent "Torn Flag" with its tense atmospheres, the comparatively restrained and nocturnal depth of the "Lowercase Conversation" as well as the rather imminent romantic late night vibe of "Because It Happened" which even persists throughout a short crescendo leading into a more active and playful Jazz variation in the tunes second part just to lay out an outline of what to expect on this longplayer which is defo a recommended affair for collectors of all things Contemporary Avantgarde Jazz and beyond.
