Brulez Les Meubles + Ingrid Laubrock, Jonathan Huard & Marianne Trudel - Folio #5 [Tour De Bras / Circum-Disc]
Released on December 6th, 2k24 as a collaborational effort between the two labels Tour De Bras and Circum-Disc is "Folio #5", the latest album by the prolific duo known as Brulez Les Meubles which, as per usual in their approach to sonic exploration, invites a guest set of renowned and x or upcoming improvisers to join them throughout their sonic journey - in this specific case a six pieces and roughly 37 minutes spanning longplayer. Musically the ensemble of five operates on a deep, romantic and carefully layered late night Jazz level from the very beginning of the opening piece "Argentique" which feels rather arranged than improvised before breaking off into full on screaming Improv drama vs. tender piano melodies in the subsequent follow-up that is "Conscience Du Tragique" whereas the twangy, yet minimalist approach of "Vagues" opens vast, almost Ambient'esque spaces whilst also evoking memories of Tiki culture, top drawer Easy Listening and lazy scorching hot summers by the pool, the "Spider Song", albeit - like all other pieces on this album as well - without the presence of any drums or percussive elements, drifts into an intricately woven realm of detailed, ever accelerating musical elements which require years of training to be executed at breakneck speed before the final cut "Paradox De La Joie" rounds things off in a most tender and romantic way for a closing just to name a few. Defo a Jazz album one needs to listen to with loved one by one's side.
