Asher Roth - I Love College [Universal Motown]

If you happen to love mainstream-fitting, streamlined College HipHop that appeals to everyone out there as it is a nice but quickly forgotten after one hot summer tune then u might check out Asher Roth's newest 12" "I Love College" that comes along like a mixture of Skee-Lo's "I Wish" and some cuddly Campfire Rock by Beck. No underground attitude here but still an ok piece of Pop.

Really the sample used here is not actually by Beck but by Weezer.

If you listen to the whole original song - "Say It Ain't So" that ist - you won't find yourself feeling too fampfirery by the time you realise the song actually has some rather dark lyrics and a set of beautiful harmonies as well as a stikingly unironic hair-metal-guitar-solo near the end, but what is really worth pointing out is that the original song has an emotinal impact that that Asher Roth-track lacks completly. More than that: Listening to that piece of music reminded me of how much I detest the attitude of kids that understand themselves as part of some type of intellectual elite because of the circumstances under which they grow up.

This is a promlem I have with alternative hip hop in general. Not so much that it is not 'underground' but that most of the time it's pretty full of itself and therefore only enjoyabble for those who make it.

well - to be honest i didn't recognize any sample as i come from a 100% electronic music background so i'm not too familiar with any guitar music. referring to beck came to mind here not samplewise but due to a general feel / athmosphere...
