Reinhold Friedl / Quatuor Diotima - 39:23:00' [Alamuse 008]

Released via Alamuse earlier this month is this collaborational album effort created by Zeitkratzer's Reinhold Friedl as a composer of string quartets and the French Quatuor Diotimo ensemble as executing and performing element. Together, they present an array of three compositions starting with "String Quartet 1", a piece of a well non-comforting, unpleasant, asymmetric and seemingly random, although composed, nature caused by a specific playing technique in which the instruments are only bowed in circles. The follow-up which is "String Quartet 3" lives up to the expectations of a classical string quartet whilst being slightly off-kilter and dissonant whereas the main, 20+ minutes spanning "String Quartet 2" is more of a ghostly, nervous and fretful piece for uneasy dreams and paranoid anxiety episodes. Not exactly our cup of tea but possibly good for die-hard followers of contemporary classical and conceptual art music.
