Dan Pitt Quintet - Horizontal Depths [self-released album]
Another more recent, and most importantly self-released, album from the buzzing Canadian music scene is "Horizontal Depths", the latest longplayer cooked up by composer and guitarist Dan Pitt and his musical companions which, as an obvious group of five, are forming the Dan Pitt Quintett. Put out on the circuit on November 1st, 2k24 the eight compositions and roughly 41 minutes spanning album explores a musical arc spanning from the Jazz-infused, funky, yet well muscular intro turning full on dramatic and Psychedelia savvy electric guitar improv session that is the opener "27 Hours" with its highly seductive sax motif to the twangy late night vibes of the subsequent "Horizontal Depths Part One", the tender, stripped down and carefully arranged caressing and intricate romanticisms layered in the beauteous "The Sorrow" which might be a future classic in the making amongst Deep Jazz connaisseurs. Furthermore "Echo Park" caters hypnotically entangled guitar motifs in endless repetition, evoking memories of echoes of classic Krautrock at times, whilst "Tautology" presents a perfect score for late fall evenings spent in front of an open fire and the final cut named "Lester Sleeps In" rounds things off in a rather calm, most tender manner just to name a few. Defo an album speaking to both experienced Jazz aficionados as well as to those just wanting to enjoy and listen to deep and beautiful music for what is without going into technical intricacies and minute sonic detail at all. Go check.
