Rough Unit - Desert Crash [Bam Balam Records]
Put out as limited edition of 100 copies only via the Bordeaux-based label Bam Balam Records only recently is "Desert Crash", the latest five track mini album by Rough Unit, an actual side project by RG Rough who's been closely associated with the label ever since the release of his album "60" back in 2019. Opening with "Snake Drive" we see Rough Unit embarking on a journey into rather stripped down and whirling atmospheric PostPunk realms evoking memories of both Tristesse Contemporaine as well as David Lynch for a reason whereas the follow up that is "Red Light Down" weighs in a little more of a straightforward late night dancefloor attitude for all the creatures of the night heavily into PostPunk - and Batcave, vibewise. Furthermore the subsequent "Night Horns" work their way up to a rather dramatic and spiralling climax (not climax) after a suitably dark and nocturnal intro sequence followed by "Dead Ringers", a creeping, constrained and atmospheric sonic exercise accompanied by a fascinating variation of a rather intimate speak-singing performance in terms of vocal delivery whereas the final 8+ minutes cut that is "Ten Miles Under The Radar" weighs in a slightly noisier, defo spine-tingling and probably Industrial-informed PostPunk vision for fans of early Tropic Of Cancer releases and other folks in the know. Go check.
