Focus On: Argy [Poker Flat Recordings]

The latest longplay shot on the well beloved imprint Poker Flat Recordings is the new CD album "Focus On: Argy" , focusing - as the name clearly suggests - on the production work of the Greece-based artist - delivering new & exclusive solo works, a few remixes plus a bunch of collabos with names as The Mole, DJ Gregory or Sydenham, brought to your ears as a perfectly blended non-stop-mix that stands out from others as its structure is quite different from the usual DJ-mix compilation one might see around. But find out yourself what this means in detail, as you'll - or at least are recommended to - buy this one anyway. Accompanying the CD format is a 2x12" vinyl featuring six exclusive collaboration tracks taken from the album and the epic "In The Mist" alongside Sydenham is worth the price of this piece alone as it's going to add some extra psyched out spice to any DJ-set. Once again this longplayer proves why Poker Flat became one of the most important labels within the - so-called - Minimal (add Techno or House here) circuit and is about to stay on top.

Audiomatique Volume 2.0 mixed by Adultnapper [Audiomatique Recordings]

Recently released on Audiomatique Recordings is "Audiomatique Voume 2.0 mixed by Adultnapper", a nice sixteen track CD showcase of what has been put on the vinyl circuit throughout the last months plus a few exclusives additionally released as two separate 12"es for all vinyl addicts. The mix lifts off with Trentemøller's controversial Pole Remix of "Miss You" that embraces Dubstep beats but leaves the bass alone for some reason and features some of the labels strongest tracks as there are Gui Boratto & Martin Eyerer's "The Beach" and "The Island", Robert Babicz's "Spiral Boogie" or Mikael Jonasson's "Twenty-Se7en", which still sits in my box every time I play out Minimal stuff. Expertly selected and blended the whole mix builds up tension from minute zero and proves the timeless club and dancefloor quality of Audiomatique releases as the same selection without a doubt would be able to hype every primetime crowd if played out somewhere throughout a proper night out. Recommended.

Thomas Christoph Heyde - High Culture Motherfucker [Phantomnoise Records 014 / HCMF Records 001]

With its 14th release - which is, in CD-format and with two additional tracks, cat.no. 001 of the artists own label HCMF Records - Leipzig's highly appreciated imprint Phantomnoise Records totally leaves the electronic dance floor alone and focuses on a new musical direction with Thomas Christoph Heyde's full-length album "High Culture Motherfucker" which, according to the albums subtitle, presents "Works For Instruments And Live Electronics", e.g. compositions for piano, 4 percussionists, turntable and liveelectronics. Using the term composition instead of track or tune implicates that the music to be found here belongs to what is the so-called "new music" or "avantgarde music" that is performed in festivals or concert halls all over the world - Thomas Christoph Heyde played in classy places like this in Berlin, Boston or Zürich already, but at the same time performs in more underground venues as there are UT Connewitz or Ilse's Erika in his hometown Leipzig. Musicwise his work - sometimes score'esque with Film Noir'ish ambience, sometimes spooky and sometimes exploding into hectic clusters of Noise and nervous crescendos - is not easy to get, but needs a bit of listening experience to fully unfold within all its great details and various layers of instruments as e.g. the multi-layered flute in "Fernen", but will also impress the unexperienced listener with his high density and enormous suspense. Recommended to both.

Sido - Mach Die Augen Auf *Swing Remix / Halt Dein Maul *Flash Gordon Remix [Sido 001]

German rapper Sido, quite regularly referred to as one of the bad boys in german HipHop culture due to his mostly quite explicit lyrics that push boundaries further comes up with a surprising 7" release these days. "Mach Die Augen Auf *Swing Remix" features a childs choir, could be taken off a series like Sesame's Street and directly approaches parents that like to avoid their own breed to become so-called street and problem kids. A good move though as drunk and drugged underagers are regularly discussed in Germany's yellow press - especially as Sido functions as a role model for loads of underprivileged teens and might reach a few with his message. "Halt Dein Maul *Flash Gordon Remix" is a bit more drastic when it comes to lyrics that Sido spits on top of an uptempo Drum'n'Bass-related beat and might be good fun to play this one out in front of a bouncing D'n'B-massive

Two Armadillos – Hamlin [Dessous Recordings 081]

Giles Smith and Martin Dawson a.k.a. Two Armadillos are back with their second release on Dessous Recordings and provide quality again. "Hamlin" is exactly that kind of dubby, partly Basic Channel-influenced DeepHouse one loves on the dancefloor for its basic approach and reduced attitude – no additional chords, strings and melodies needed here, just beats, bass and pleasure plus a few organic sounds flickering through, creating a huge late night athmosphere that’ll be well appreciated by loads of punters and DJ’s the same. Sascha Dive delivers his so-called Secret Dub version on the flip and stays quite close to the original vibe here although his re-work seem to be stripped down even more, whilst „Snowflakes“ on B2 works on a similar, but more uptempo level as „Hamlin“ does and will find its way into cases of minimal jocks as well.

Wiley – Wearing My Rolex [Warner Music UK]

Well, although I’m quite aware of „Wearing My Rolex“ is making big waves these days I wasn’t quite keen to add this one to my collection as is only an average ElectroHouse tune to me, a seductive one but none of relevance and to stand the test of time. But there’s one mix on this 12“ that simply kills all of these aspects and converts it to a must have – Agent X saved my day with his Niche re-lick on A2 and is about to save yours, too. Check for this mix only and leave the rest alone.

Sino Mack – This’n That [Moonbootique 031]

Hamburg based Moonbootique Records has admittedly not been the label to touch me with their releases – although highly successful on the dancefloor their vision of ElectroHouse is not mine, mostly too commercial and, most of all, too obvious in their use of hands in the air effects and all that. Same goes for three out of four mixes of Sino Mack’s new 12“ here, but Amir’s Mix on B1 sticks out for good as he reworks the whole thing into a bouncy Minimal Techno tune, featuring driving hi-hats and only a few cut-up vocal pieces of the original version – a whole different track this is and defo checkworthy.

Iron Soul vs. Destinys Child - Surviver [Southside Legacy 013]

More and more Niche-releases are hitting the stores in Germany right now so one should not be surprised if this sound is about to explode here throughout mid-summer time. Iron Soul delivers a proper Niche re-lick of Destinys Child uber-hit "Surviver" using strings and melody of the tune, but unfortunately leaving out the vocals. Anyway, this one is top notch. Another hard hitting untitled track is delivered on A2, unveiling the darker side of Niche whilst the flip comes up with a cheesy, Mickey Mouse-voxed re-lick of Ashanti's "Rain On Me" that is quite interesting for commercial jocks as well.

Lil Wayne - Lollipop / Milli [Universal Records]

Lil Wayne has a new double A-side on the promo circuit these days, coming up with a nice mixture of electroid beats, DigiSoul and partly vocodered robo vox that is defo different from what is to be usually found on the so-called Black Music dancefloor. Due to this "Lollipop" is meant to reach all those longin' for something new in this genre and might break into sets of other, non HipHop- or DigiSoul-jocks as well. "Milli" on the flip sees loads of oldskool Miami Bass-influences when it comes to beat science as the 808 is booming and about to blast your car stereo system for sure. Check that.

The Game - Game's Pain [Geffen Records]

Fresh on the promo circuit via Geffen Records is The Game's new 12" featuring Keyshia Cole on vocal duties, which pays respect to the good ol' days of HipHop and drops loads of legendary names taht are quite familiar with everyone being into HipHop for ages. Musicwise the 12", taken from the forthcoming "LAX" album comes up with a mixture of HipHop and DigiSoul that is able to cross over and reach a mainstream audience for sure.

Deleta – Aerosol Bastards E.P. [Sub Carnage 001]

As we see the popularity of a Dubstep constantly rising both amongst listeners and producers the same there’s no surprise that more and more established artists from other genres reach a point when they feel like adding their personal view of what Dubstep might sound like today. Now it’s Deleta – better known as Bazooka to followers of Hardcore, DarkJungle and Speedhall – who installs his imprint Sub Carnage as sister label to his mothership Aural Carnage and hits dancefloors with two ultra-massive tracks. Heaviest bassdrum attacks, spooky athmosphere and basslines that remind of darkest Drum’n’Bass played out at wrong speed plus Elephant Man and Bounty Killer on vocal duties on top of „Murdera“ make you bang your head hard at a speed below 80 bpm. Killer!

Nelly featuring Fergie - Party People [Universal Motown]

Nelly's new 12" "Party People" has been put on the promo circuit recently via Universal Motown. Featuring Fergie on vocal duties this seemed to be the first interesting Nelly 12" ever 'coze he sticked to straight rappin' and not singing at all and the beats are more thrilling then everything else he ever put out so far, but a second test unveiled that this is only another average, kinda Crunk HipHop record that no one doesn't need at all. Works the floor right but is forgotten within seconds.

!!! Attention !!! 07.05.2008 baze.djunkiii presents: JDB @ Byte.FM

Apologizes to all those who are waiting for a new "baze.djunkiii presents: JDB" show @ Byte.FM tonight. Throughout the planned pre-recording session we experienced some technical difficulties that basicly lead to a failure of the whole session. Due to this a re-run of february's "baze.djunkiii presents: JDB" will be broadcasted tonight instead.

What is "Vintage" ?

As some of you might have recognized I've referred to the term "Vintage" more regularly throughout the past months not only as a description of sound but also as a style definition itself, a style that differs from what has been there and seems to gain popularity amongst music nerds and experts as well as mainstream listeners the same. So it's about time to give a short definition of what we're talking here...

"Vintage" is a part of contemporary Dance / Pop music that basicly can be described as amalgamation of influences taken from styles as there are Soul, Rare Groove, Acid Jazz and similar, combined with up to date production as well as studio techniques plus beats and structures referring to Club / Dance music styles as HipHop, Downtempo, Funky Breaks and Broken Beats / Phusion - mixed and merged at different rates.

"Vintage" music is mostly original and does not necessarily rely on obvious samples to create its special, kind of smokey sound that is responsible for the aspect of being "Vintage" at all, a sound that makes it hard sometimes, especially for untrained ears of mainstream consumers, to tell if a track played out is from way back in time or fresh and contemporary, even more as "Vintage" tracks are played out by HipHop-DJ's the same as Freestyle-jocks, in front of Rare Groove-audiences (without complaints!), in standard discotheques, bars as well as - talking more commercial releases - on mainstream radio stations and apply to crowds as different as crowds can be. Yet it's not to figure out if "Vintage" is only a short term phenomenon or will leave a trace in music history as a new retro movement here to stay but talking in terms of new "Vintage" releases appearing in stores in each every week these days it seems to be relevant and remarkable.

Some examples for commercial "Vintage" releases are well known as the likes of Amy Winehouse or Duffy are all over the place right now but also more underground releases as Lack Of Afro ft. Steve Marriott's "Touch My Soul" on Freestyle Records or cat.no. 029 of Rebtuz Isle Records, sister label of Tru Thoughts give an idea of what is happening in terms of "Vintage" these days...

Blaktroniks - Mechanized Soul [Rubaiyat / Phazzadelic]

Scheduled for may 23rd is the new and fifth album of Oakland's Blaktroniks, hitting the stores entitled "Mechanized Soul". Slow, sluggish beats meet what might be named as Advanced HipHop here plus a lot of oldskool'ish, crooning Soul / Gospel / Blues references brought in by Edward Robinson, 60 year old father of Blaktroniks-founder Edd Dee Pee - now a man of god and religion, back in the days a singer himself. The whole album seems to be best played out in some small red'ish underground venue some miles away from any kind of mainstream nightlife, in one of these special places only known and attended by musical connaisseurs and some cool street cats that hang out each and every night. Guess u all know what we're talking here... . For sure they won't hit major sales charts with this one, but "Mechanized Soul" is to be regarded as future classic anyway and will sound fresh in ten years time, no matter what happens in between.
