Steve Bug - Time Flies: The Best Of Steve Bug 1999 - 2009 [Poker Flat Digital 009]

Although I'm not to keen on the fact that Poker Flat Recordings, one of the labels pioneering the mp3-market for a long time now, starts to embrace the digital format in a way that partly excludes all those who prefer classic vinyl or a nice CD box set this retrospective download package is quite essential to all those who haven't followed the label and Steve Bug as its head honcho from day dot but discovered the magic of his sound somewhen on the way throughout its now a decade lasting journey. 15 tracks are included - the magic "Loverboy", the seductive "You Make Me Feel", the beloved "November Girl" amongst others plus some rare tunes from Steve Bug's secret labels as they were B-Series and Traffic Signs back in the days. Quality stuff.

All In! - 10 Years Of Poker Flat [Poker Flat Recordings]

Well, it's pretty hard to believe that Poker Flat Recordings is like 10 years in business yet as time flies by pretty fast, especially in club culture, but looking back it seems like the time span from 1999 to 2009 makes up to ten years so it must be true anyway. To celebrate this special anniversary Poker Flat comes up with a collectors CD box, a limited and hand numbered edition of 2000 pieces, that includes three discs plus a specifically designed poker deck and a set of cards as well while the regular will only contain a 2-CD pack. Whatever, we're talking music not features here so we'll see CD1 jam packed with exclusive tracks by usual suspects as Steve Bug himself, Märtini Brös., Patrick Chardronnet as well as some new faces or collabos as we e.g. see Adultnapper and Mr C (yes, of The Shamen and The End fame) working together as Sycopant SLags and delivering a deep athmospheric masterpiece named "Telling". CD2 delivers a retrospective view on Poker Flat's latest output featuring recent releases from the past year as Phonique's massive "House Of God" remix , Donnacha Costelllo's massive "Hello, I Must Be Going" or DJ T.'s techy "After Dark" whilst CD3 - the bonus - serves classics as Hakan Lidbo's "Kiki De Montparnasse", Jackmate's "Recall" or Steve Bug's "A Night Like This" amongst others that cannot be missed by any lover of the typical Poker Flat-sound. Recommended.

Randomer - Down In The Woods / Paranoid Society - Hi Resolution [Alphacut Records 009 Promo]

Not that long ago Alphacut Records released their cat.no. 009 , a split 12" between producers Randomer and Paranoid Society. Whilst Randomer's "Down In The Wood" comes up with a kind of tribal, ancient and aboriginal feel mixed with ultra-funky, experimental DarkJungle interesting for those well loving the output of artists like Amit, Shackleton and similar, Paranoid Society's "Hi Resuloution" unveals a deep and dark Metalheadz-like feel - talkin' their great "Platinum Breaks" era - that once again showcases the raw, uncut beauty of Drum'n'Bass in its purest form. Massive tune that hopefully will be understood by the younger generation as well, by those that haven't followed the movement from day dot.

Dadajugend Polyform - Support Our Loops [Audiolith]

Scheduled for release on March 13th via Audiolith is Dadajugend Polyform's 12" "Support Our Loops" which features four of their tracks remixed by the likes of Frittenbude, Plemo and others delivering high energy re-licks for Indie-appreciating ElectroPunk-dancefloors that love a bit of Italo-/ pizzicato-flavour from time to time. Yes, that means a bit of cheesy kitsch is invlvd here, too, but that's one of the ingredients necessary to make sweaty punters smile...

Proktah feat. MC Coppa - What U Know / Dementia & NME Click - Acrania [.shadybrain 006]

.shadybrain continues its vinyl business in 2009 with a double A-sided 12" featuring Proktah feat. MC Coppa on one and a collaborational effort between Dementia & NME Click on the flipside. Both tracks are about to work technoid D'n'B-/Neurofunk-appreciating crowds but "What U Know" is defo the tune that'll gain double-rewinds for sure as MC Coppa's lines plus a nice half-time breakdown will hype all rave crowds for sure whilst "Acrania" is a proper late night tune on a tool'ish tip based upon deepness and a growling bassline.

Ripperton & Sam K - Eze E.P. [Dessous Recordings 086 Promo]

Dessous Recordings has put its cat.no 086 on the promo circuit these days which is a split E.P. between Ripperton and Sam K who deliver one collaborational tune on the A-side plus two solo efforts on the flip. All tracks explore the musical field in between DeepHouse-attitude and clubby minimalism and in the end it's Ripperton's "Slipstream" winning the race due to a fine, pumping Chicago-flavored bassline, oldskool'ish stabs and sexy vocal cut ups - defo a late night weapon for small reddish clubs and a musically well educated audience.

[C90 Rules OK! 002]

Droppin' in as stamped white label 7" - yes, that's what real underground music is about - today was cat.no. 002 of the nicely named imprint C90 Rules OK! . No information on artists responsebilities or track titles is given but there's great music to be found anyway, stuck somewhere in between Electro, Electronica and Acid. the A-side delivers a nive Electro meets Acid fusion that is about to be appreciated on advanced dancefloors and by risk taking jocks, whilst the flipside celebrates a special kind of ElectroPhonk that has been pioneered and clearly influenced by labels such as Hotel Lotte and 800 Trak. I love it.

Greg Cerrone - Taking Control [On The Air Music]

If you're in love with ElectroHouse, especially with the specific part of this genre that is make for big, if not huge rooms and approaching a wide audience due to its melodic and partly vocal flavored attitude then u might check out Greg Cerrone's forthcoming album "Taking Control" which is scheduled for release on april 17th. Supporting DJ's are the likes of David Guetta, Sebastian Ingrosso, David Axwell, Tom Novy and many others so from this list one might guess what to expect from this 17 track longplayer. Not highly innovative but quality if one is rolling with the ElectroHouse vibe.

Dizzee Rascal - Dance Wiv Me *Remixes [Dirtee Stank / Universal]

Dizzee Rascal's very own imprint Dirtee Stank collaborates with the Universal Music Group to unleash remixes of his hit "Dance Wiv Me" on the german market. A bit late as the original featuring the massive Agent X Niche-relick has been available as import for a while and made its way into the crates of all Grime-/ UK Urban-loving jocks already. As one might guess Agent X' relick is missing on the german promo 12", which is a real pity as it might have hleped to push Niche / Bassline forward here coze the style is mostly unheard of by german punters, but remixers like DJ Frizzo and DJ Teddy-O & Benny Blanco deliver proper but not essential Urban reworks here that are about to work more commercial or unexperienced crowds right and introduce the so-called voice of Grime to a wider audience. On the other side we've got Phatclick Swayze & Alec Cresp's remix attempt failing while delivering a piece of slow cheesy boring House. A dispensable case of bandwagon jumping.

Weil’s Spass macht.

Burnski - Draw Your Sword [Poker Flat Recordings 102 Promo]

It's hard to weigh and compare releases put out via a high quality imprint as Poker Flat Recordings is but with its cat.no. 102 - Burnski's "Draw Your Sword" - the catalogue reached another climax as this one is such a massive Minimal Funk monster that I'd regard it as the best Poker Flat releases in ages if not ever. Both tunes come up with the right percentage of minimalism but bringing in classic House as well and a ultra funky vibe that is made to set roofs on fire. Plus they're perfect mix tools and fit with any other tune as long as there's nuff energy provided. Instant classic.

50 Cent - I Get It In [Interscope]

Put on the circuit via Interscope is another 50 Cent tune under the name of "I Get It In" taken off his new album "Before I Self Destruct". Musically this tune's rollin' on a quite relaxed vibe with a nice athmosphere, even could be called a perfect tune for sipping drinks on a nice summer evening, and is defo one for the ladies - watch 'em dance when u play that.

Eminem / Dr. Dre / 50 Cent - Crack A Bottle [Interscope]

Put on the promo circuit via Interscope these days is this triple collaboration 12" featuring no less than three heavyweight figures in todays HipHop biz working together on a tune that is not - as one might expect - a hard hitting club tune but more of a laid back affair for late night hours and smaller, sophisticated dancefloors all over the world. Defo a good one.

Stereofunk - Captain Funk [Moonbootique 034 Promo]

Moonbootique Records is about to release its cat.no. 034 soon, Stereofunk's "Captain Funk" which has been put on the promo circuit these days. As one might already expect this one is a kinda glitzy deal that works best with a hyper ElectroHouse-crazy primetime crowd ready to brock out. Not for the small clubs but for big rooms instead.

Sascha Müller - Finanzkrisenmanagement: Steuerhinterziehung [Pharmacom Records]

Sascha Müller comes up with a new, limited to 40 copies album on Pharmacom Records named "Finanzkrisenmanagment: Steuerhinterziehung" that is not only specially packed in a triple-folded 7"-sized cardboard cover featuring an original romanian 1 Leu-bill as artwork but also recommended to music specialists highly appreciating experimental Ambient, Armchair Techno, ChillOut and Deep Listening Music. Rare stuff and soon to be referred to as collectors item.

Sascha Müller - The Return Of The Space Invaders [Pharmacom Records 047]

Pharmacom Records is back with its cat.no. 047, which is Sascha Müller's "The Return Of The Space Invaders" - a split into three parts release that clearly works in the traditions of synthesizer experimentalists and composers like Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis or D. Perrier and that will be appreciated by fans of those named as well as many Ambient headz out there. Music for Chill Outs.

Click Click Decker - Den Umständen Entsprechend [Audiolith]

Click Click Decker's new album "Den Umständen Entsprechend" has been released via Audiolith Records recently and for the first time in ages the label steps back from its obvious ElectroPunk-attitude and comes up with a release that clearly refers to what once was filed as "Hamburger Schule". For all those who're not aware of this specificly german sub-genre it will appear as nice, danceable and mostly acoustic IndiePop with german lyrics - not only for those who understand the language and get the lyrical point but accessible to folks all over the world.

Steve Vercetti - Anglio E Olio [Super 6 Records 039.5]

Steve Vercetti is the next one to release on Super 6 Records and with his "Anglio E Olio" he hits the spot right if you're in love with deep, melodic electronic dance music that might be filed as "Fliegertrance" by some german ravers...

The Prodigy - 0 [Take Me To The Hospital]

The Prodigy are back with their new album "Invaders Must Die" and "0" is the first single taken off that and put on promo circuit these days. Musically there is no big surprise to be expected - business as usual which is called Breakbeat-based Stadium Rave-sound with loads of Rock-influences - and the choice of remixers is quite obvious too as we see Herve, Noisia and Chase & Status doing their duty here. Proper for Indie vs. Electronics vs. NuRave venues but if u bought "The Fat Of The Land" and / or "Firestarter" back in the days there's no real need for this one to be included in yr collection. For starters.

Things Have Been Coming Full Cyle Again

Just been listening to The Crystal Method's 1997-released album "Vegas" recently and it just came to my mind that things in electronic dance music have come full cycle again. These days and throughout the last two years we've seen - especially within the incestuos, forum-based and nerd-poisoned Drum'n'Bass-scene - a lot of discussions going on about the growing influence of classic Rock music and its structures in electronic dance music, mostly revolving around that "Pendulum-thing" as Pendulum have been playing more big rock festivals throughout the last 12 months and that they're seen as mainstream or even sell out as they've reached a stage of playing in front of 10k+ ppl, moving away from the so-called underground structures and even siging a deal with a major company.
But still, if one looks closer and about ten to twelve years in the past all that Electronic meets Rock fusion has been there once before, not in Drum'n'Bass but in what was called Big Beat, a musical vision that has been filed as electronic music for beer drinking pub heads not only once, and it has had some mainstream success due to a clear crossover potential back then, too. Which is not bad at all, coze the so-called underground desperately needs those crossover projects if they're coming from the heart and not coming for just the money to introduce new folks to electronic beats and these days with a decreasing amount of record sales and an equals zero appearance of electronic music in the mainstream media new folks is more needed than ever before.

Arthur Laber - Black & White [Super 6 Records 039]

Super 6 Records are introducing a new artist - Arthur Laber - to their ever growing stable which delivers a solid debut here. Although it's surely not the most inspiring release the label has ever seen friends of proper, tool'ish Minimal Techno will be up for it, using the first three tracks named "Black", "And", "White" to keep the crowd bubbling throughout a warm up set whilst Sacha Müller's so-called "Whiteline Remix" aims towards more primetime-focused jocks and punters. Quality, but not essential.

Piddy Py - Giggle Riddim [Dress 2 Sweat]

All Niche-headz are about to bang their heads to the newest 12" on Dress 2 Sweat, usually known for its Baltimore- and GhettoBass-flavored output, which delivers a sick tune here with Piddy Py's "Giggle Riddim" that is about drive raving crowds mad due to its mad giggle-sample and a bouncy bassline. On the flip there's - apart from another instrumental tune going by the name of "Prickly Rose" - a vocal cut of "Giggle" to be found that features MNT on the mic spitting sick lines. This specific cut is about to stick in my box for ages. Anthem.

Sascha Müller - Audio System [Super 6 Goodies 049]

Sascha Müller is back on his own Super 6 Goodies-imprint with a new release named "Audio System". This one is split into two parts, both coming up as ultra dry, jam-session like recordings with some bubbly acidic modulations and a bit of charming Chicago-basement attitude. For those who like things ruff.

Sad but true.

If you play Minimal Techno and similar styles on a weekday in a bar-like place and there's a bunch of three young punters entering the place for music reasons its quite likely that two of them are totally nice and one is a fully wasted dickhead that turned even worse due to uncontrolled alcohol and chemical abuse habits. In most of the cases it doesn't take long 'til you have to kick the dickhead out 'coze he's - yes, it's mostly a young males thing - annoying everybody in the place although his friends try to apologize for his bad behaviour. In those cases I always feel sorry for his friends as they're most likely to leave with their wasted compagnon although they'd love to stay in for a while.

Two Fingers - What You Know [Big Dada]

Two Fingers - as it seems a collaboration project of Doubleclick and legendary Downtempo-producer and sound designer Amon Tobin - recently unleashed their first 12" on Big Dada under the name of "What You Know". Featuring Sway on vocal duties this one can be filed as straight in yer face gangsta-tune on top of a tribalistic, clearly african-influenced riddim that'll be appreciated not only by Grimeists all over the place but by a wider audience open to productions by DJ Mujava and the likes of as well. On the flipside we see Emalkay doing a nice remix delivery, serving an uplifting piece of ElectroGrime with some clearly Trance-influenced melody / hook. Sure to set dancefloors on fire.
