Ohrchitekt - Snakeseed [Pharmacom Records 049]

Recently released via Pharmacom Records as their cat.no. 049 is the new Ohrchitekt album "Snakeseed", a 14-tracker consisting of waht can be filed as bleepy Electronica and a few excursions into Drum'/Drill'n'Bass with a mostly lo-fi attitude. One of those acts you'd meet @ art school or - if u know this venue - would've seen live on stage @ Hamburg's Astra Stube when it was still run by the original promoters. For those who love it the diy-way.

06.05.2009 baze.djunkiii presents: Booty. @ Byte.FM

file under: Electro / GhettoTech / GhettoBass

Weekend.

Just a brief recap of the last days.

Friday:
Playing @ the 5th birthday celebration fest of Hamburg's Lockengelöt store was a pretty weird experience. Technically starting with the lack of monitors and musicwise having the DJ before me playing a mixed set of 50's, 60's and Swing music to a swingin' crowd. Switching to the sound I was booked for - Disco and ItaloDisco - wasn't the easiest thing to do and not necessarily appreciated by many. But what to do? I was quite happy that Carsten of Lockengelöt took over after a while so I got a little spoilt and decided to carry my box home from Hafenklang to Ottensen where I live. Not the best idea ever.

Saturday:
Recovery. Spent a view hours in the suburbs l8r speading stickers, than headed off to Sommersalon where I expected my mate Rhino Soulsystem to be on the decks. He wasn't, so it was off to Molotow / Meaniebar where I eventually met Svenja & her mate Birdie. So the night was spent drinkig beer & having a nice chat.

Sunday:
Sleeping for ages, then heading off to Molotow again where I had to play a support set for Holy Fuck and It Hugs Back. Place wasn't that packed but I guess the set was quite appreciated. Holy Fuck on stage were massive. Guess I'll do that kind of support sets more often in the future as it is totally different from playing to a club crowd and one can get deeper into the realms of experimentalism which is interesting. Maybe like a bit of teaching them folks about unheard and rare sounds and sligtly broaden their view on music, getting them into stuff they haven't been aware of yet.

Harbour Boat Trips: Copenhagen by Trentemøller [HFN Music]

Honestly I've never been a big fan of Anders Trentemøller's musical work and sometimes couldn't understand the hype created but what he serves these days compilationwise on the new outlet HFN Music with his "Harbour Boat Trips: Copenhagen" is a remarkable piece indeed. To be released on may 18th this compilation / mix is to be called nothing else than eclectic - a carefully blended genre and border crossing selection that contains tunes and tracks from artists as different as Emiliana Torrini, Gravenhurst, Suicide, Two Lone Swordsmen and even Soft Cell, 21 tracks all in all showcasing Mr. Trentemøllers favourites from four decades of music history. Likeable, loveable and one that is about to stand the test of time.

Asher Roth - I Love College [Universal Motown]

If you happen to love mainstream-fitting, streamlined College HipHop that appeals to everyone out there as it is a nice but quickly forgotten after one hot summer tune then u might check out Asher Roth's newest 12" "I Love College" that comes along like a mixture of Skee-Lo's "I Wish" and some cuddly Campfire Rock by Beck. No underground attitude here but still an ok piece of Pop.

Moodymanc - Snore [Dessous Recordings 088]

With their 88th 12" release Dessous Recordings are bringing back the House and when we talk House music here everything is about stripped down and pumping beats, influenced by the Latin- and/or TribalHouse of an era long gone - the mighty 1993/4 years on labels like Strictly Rhythm and the likes of. The one who brings us this flavour is Danny Ward a.k.a. Moodymanc, appreciated for his latest releases and now setting off on a slightly new path with this three tracker that is hopefully not a single shoot on Dessous Recordings. Not only recommended to all House-heads out there but as well to those who regard UK Funky as latest hype - listen to this one and u'll know where thte original shit comes from.

Bodymovin - Good Time [We Love This 001]

We Love This - a new label for what is called ElectroHouse these days has put its cat.no. 001 on the promo circuit recently which is Bodymovin's "Good Times". Responsible for this alias are DJ Friction of Freundeskreis- and Thomilla of Turntable Rockers-fame, somehow paying respect to the likes of Lil' Louis - yes, some of the chords seem to be taken of "French Kiss"- and serving their version or vision of contempaorary dancefloor music. Unfortunately this vision is shared by many producers these days that rely on the same glitzy sounds over and over again so this one, although a proper one, doesn't really manage to stick out of the flood of releases appearing daily in each and every record store - it's a bit too formulaic and even Martinez' pumping, House-flavored and kinda tribalistic remix on the flip side isn't really able to change that.

Humate - Love Stimulation Remixes [Flying Circus 002]

It's been a while now since Flying Circus released their stunning cat.no. 001 and now they're back with remixes of another Techno-/ Trance-classic. Radio Slave deliver two updated, long-building versions of Humate's legendary "Love Stimulation" that fit well into today's musical context and will appeal to all Radio Slave-fans for sure, but seem to be not that inspiring for all those who've been raving to the massive original track and all those goose-bumped hands-in-the-air memories tightly bond to it. Average.

Neo Cartoon Lover - Input Output [Modern Noise / Dead Frog Records]

Well, hate is a strong word that is rarely used when I review an album but if there's one hateworthy album out this year then it's gonna be Neo Cartoon Lover's "Input Output" , scheduled for june 12th via Dead Frog Records which should drop dead for releasing this one. For some reason the swedish band manages to include all elements in one album that I'd hoped to never come across in dance music again: cheesy House filters, cheap Trance melodies, U2-wannabe stadium vocals, fake Ragga-chants and some fake BigBeat-structures as well all melted into a sleazy piece of mainstream radio glitz that is about penetrate innocent ears for months. Do not buy, do not support - this is the worst thing I've heard in ages.

And now, after listening to "Input Output" twice I'm gonna switch to some proper Hardcore Drum'n'Bass to get my brain in order again.

Isis - Wavering Radiant [Conspiracy Records]

Listening to Isis' fifth studio album, entitled "Wavering Radiant" and due to be released via Conspiracy Records on april 24th for the second time while writing this review I've clearly gotta admit that I'm not that impressed, at least not that impressed as I was when listening to their 2006-released "The Absence Of Truth". Although it is what I'd name as a solid piece of art it seems like mixing Aaron Turner's vocals more to the front and working on melodical complexities equals with taking away the more radical aspects of Isis' music. That does not mean that they've turned Pop in any matter but "Wavering Radiant" is more accessible than any of their former albums. Time will tell if that's good or bad but still this album is one to be checked out and one of those albums that gets better and better as time passes by.
