Wanna Support Us?

Launched in the late 90s and switched to this beloved blog format more than two decades ago nitestylez.de has not only been continously online with basically no downtime, self-financed and fiercely independent but at the same time dedicated to the outer fringes of the sonic spectrum, a platform for the deepest crevasses and smallest underground niches run by a single dedicated mad man and music nerd that is known as baze.djunkiii. A place without prejudices and x or paywalls, a probably life-long mission and an ongoing work in progress with literally thousands of hours put in in terms of writing reviews alone.

Now, for the first time ever and after a quarter of a century online, we've found a way to provide ppl with a way to support our work without giving up any of our strongly fought for independence. And the solution is - POD.

So if you're a long time reader and feel the urge to support us, feel free to go ahead. Buy a tote bag - or a shirt - if you want to!

Zark [M0N0 - 1]

Scheduled for release as a hyperlimited lathe-cut 8" whitelabel edition in March of 2k25, marking the very first sonic transmission made by the new M0N0 label is an untitled stamped two track single produced by Zark. Providing little to none information the hand-stamped whitelabel side revives the so-called Schaffel niche within MinimalTechno and therefore instantly evokes associations with Cologne's Kompakt circles whilst catering noisy, yet extremely present hi-hats and a repetetive microsample for dedicated Minimal dancefloors. Furthermore the label-less flip side brings forth a similarly stripped down vibe, yet bordering on rather uptempo MinimalHouse vibes, especially when it comes to its filtered uplifting vocal fragments which might sit well with fans of track-focused DiscoHouse minimalism as well. File under: Soon to be sought after unobtainium , especially for its flipside.

Out Today: Iam JDP - Now Eh! *Mental Inertia Remix by Sascha Müller & baze.djunkiii [Freebreakz.FWD / FBFWD002]

Tracklist
A1: Now Eh! *Mental Inertia Remix by Sascha Müller & baze.djunkiii

File under: Bass / Footwork / 160 / Dubstep / Global Bass

Define: Global Bass Culture. What initially started out as a remix request from the South African Sneja Recordings label for a tune written by Colombian artist Juan Diego Pedroza a.k.a. Iam JDP ended up as the second limited edition vinyl release on the German underground label Freebreakz.FWD. Embracing influences from Chicago's Footwork x Juke sound as well as UK Bass Music, IDM and other electronic subcultures Sascha Müller and baze.djunkiii deliver a sparse, tense and wildly hypnotic take on the 160 bpm freeform movement, continously fusing and layering intermingling rhythmic patterns with ethereal vocal snippets, Trap- and Drill-infused hi-hats, an ever floating minimalist synth motif and deadly low end attacks for some of the most advanced dancefloors out there. This is crime scene music. Mastered by Frederic Stader.

Alfredo Santa Ana / Miranda Wong - Before The World Sleeps [Redshift Records / ASA Records]

Released as a collabroation project between Redshift Records and ASA Records on November 15th, 2k24 is "Before The World Sleeps", a roughly 51 minutes spanning solo piano album which sees Miranda Wong, acclaimed piano player, taking on a full length piece written by Mexican / Canadian composer Alfredo Santa Ana. Split into four chapters and their respective sub-sets, 18 in total, the compositional approach of Alfredo Santa Ana, the creation of a series of rather short pieces, 'easy to finish' in his own words and therefore probably more accessible than long and complex pieces of Contemporary Classical X Modern Classical music, is reflected by Wong's piano interpretation which ranges from lively, light-hearted and playful in the opening piece "Zaloasymphnesis" to tender and minimalist, yet still highly expressive in "Two Worlds" whereas "The Feeling Of Forgetting" and its almost hammered melodic expressions provide rather dramatic sonic pictures and probably the most extreme dynamic range on this album, the "Phantom Etude" references full on Classical compostion whilst its follow up "Fuchsia" seems to dabble with probably slightly Jazz-infused salon vibes of yore, "Ice Gods Don't Keep" caters, despite its title, some rather warm and comforting harmonies and the sparse "Snow Dirge" evokes memories of romantic evenings spent in front of an open fire just to name a few.

Tobia Bondesan x Nazareno Caputo - The Hidden Idea [Barly Records]

Incoming via mail all the way from Italy is "The Hidden Idea", the latest full length album collaboration conceived by alto sax player Tobia Bondesan and Florence-based vibraphonist Nazareno Caputo. Released on January 29th, 2k25 via Barly Records the duo embarks on a ten tracks and roughly 46 minutes spanning journey which leads them from a vantage point of deep and beautifully inward-looking ethereal late night Jazz minimalisms to be found in the opening piece that is "Forming" which, at some point, even harks back to glimpses of shimmering retrofuturism whilst to the chiming, playful and highly detailed percussive universe of "Gemini 101" later accompanied by uplifting sax harmonics whereas "Signs Of The Weather" is as tender and romantic as it gets when Jazz is for deeply connected long time lovers, "Sharp Edges" caters a new and hypnotic approach in terms of perfectly balanced attention-grabbing Jazz with explorative sax lines slowly fading out in favor of hypnotic percussion harmonics and "Relief" weighs in a refined dialogue of airy, chiming minimalisms and a saxophone at times operating at the very fringes of the upper tonal spectrum, sometimes even making the most physical aspects of these high frequency excursions audible just to name a few. File under: a cosy and intimate duo Jazz outing for late night listening.

Brulez Les Meubles + Ingrid Laubrock, Jonathan Huard & Marianne Trudel - Folio #5 [Tour De Bras / Circum-Disc]

Released on December 6th, 2k24 as a collaborational effort between the two labels Tour De Bras and Circum-Disc is "Folio #5", the latest album by the prolific duo known as Brulez Les Meubles which, as per usual in their approach to sonic exploration, invites a guest set of renowned and x or upcoming improvisers to join them throughout their sonic journey - in this specific case a six pieces and roughly 37 minutes spanning longplayer. Musically the ensemble of five operates on a deep, romantic and carefully layered late night Jazz level from the very beginning of the opening piece "Argentique" which feels rather arranged than improvised before breaking off into full on screaming Improv drama vs. tender piano melodies in the subsequent follow-up that is "Conscience Du Tragique" whereas the twangy, yet minimalist approach of "Vagues" opens vast, almost Ambient'esque spaces whilst also evoking memories of Tiki culture, top drawer Easy Listening and lazy scorching hot summers by the pool, the "Spider Song", albeit - like all other pieces on this album as well - without the presence of any drums or percussive elements, drifts into an intricately woven realm of detailed, ever accelerating musical elements which require years of training to be executed at breakneck speed before the final cut "Paradox De La Joie" rounds things off in a most tender and romantic way for a closing just to name a few. Defo a Jazz album one needs to listen to with loved one by one's side.

Spy Denomme-Welch with Catherine Magowan - Transpositions [Unsettled Scores]

Released as the first musical outing of the musical collective turned record label affair that is Unsettled Scores on November 22nd, 2k24 is "Transpositions", a seemingly transcontinental and trans-cultural mini album catering a total of eight pieces over its total playtime of a little more than 26 minutes. Conceived by Spy Denomme-Welch and Catherine Magowan the conceptual angle of this albums comes from '...the intersection between chronic illness and environmental health...' which existed pre-pandemic but was, albeit rather in the production process, as well touched by the virus years. From a sonic perspective we see the albums pieces being performed in a trio setting of viola, bass trombone / tuba and piano, opening on a rather lively tip with "Scan / Machine" which evokes both memories of rather dramatic movie scores of yore as well as early 1900s salon and cabaret culture whereas the subsequently following "Boiling Frog" opens as intense as its title is only to further evolve into a hectic, yet intricately layered dialogue of piano and bass trombone. With these two pieces setting the tone for "Transformations" as a body of work we find further references to what might've been the sound of the roaring 20s, rather dramatic late night Jazz rides as well as most intriguing minimalist piano sequences in cuts like "Fault Lines: Waves Of Panic" whilst "Acclimation" comes full circle with its light-hearted and probably dancefloor friendly vibe. Is ChamberJazz an appropriate term to describe this album?

Martin Tetreault - Vraiment Plus De Snipetes !!! [Ambiances Magnetiques 280]

Put out on the circuit via the long standing Canadian imprint that is Ambiances Magnetiques as their cat.no. 280 on December 6th, 2k24 is "Vraiment Plus Des Snipettes!!!", the latest full length album outing by experimental musician x turntable improviser Martin Tetreault, an almost 78 minutes spanning opus featuring a set of 24 relatively short compositions as well as the 27 - sic! - minutes covering closing piece that is "From Raymond A Micheline". And once again Mr. Tetreault delivers an almost overwhelming and quasi-unfathomable amount of sonic events per second in his highly detailed pieces, covering an ark of musical techniques ranging from turntablism to cut-up, collage, Plunderphonics and beyond, bordering on Musique Concrete at times, preparing a take on looped - or un-looped - FoundSound paired with unearthed Spoken Word samples of various sources, at times even implementing quirky 4-2-the-floor structures reminiscent of conceptual Minimal Techno whilst others like "Percuvox" cater utter lo-fi chaotics, others dive deep into granular electro-acoustic composition, might feature an array of purely mechanical sounds, dabble around with varying Future Tribal rhythms like "Objets", traverse into retrofuturist Avantgarde Space Age Listening scapes in "Du Buzz Du Grain Du Horn" or dive deep into tense educational materials in pieces like "Communication" whereas "Edgar & Cie" might find a place in a highly dramatic B-movie sci-fi score and the "Strange Ukulele" fully lives up to its name just to name a few. Surely an intriguing, multi-layered highly recommended album for fans and followers of truly experimental Avantgarde music which requires more than just one dedicated listening session to be embraced in all its hypergranular glory. Go check!

Ludvig Cimbrelius - Here [Sound In Silence 117]

Another rather recent album put out on the circuit via Sound In Silence on December 5th, 2k24 is "Here", the fourth full length release cooked up for the label by Swedish producer Ludvig Cimbrelius. With a total of six brand new pieces rolled out over a duration of 48 minutes Cimbrelius dives into beautifully chiming and mostly piano-centric realms with the opening piece that is "Left But Never Left" which, due to its carefully arranged harmonic interplay, might also speak to fans and followers of (Neo)Classical and Modern Classical music before "When Warm Tears Fell From The Sky" pairs washed out pillowing Glacial Ambient movements, soft pads and atmospheric background non-vocalisms to a time-discarding effect of eternity whereas the extended piece that is "These Flames I Gently Let" brings forth more floating and comforting Ambient goodness in combination with subdued, somewhat nocturnal piano etudes and rather present tectonic low end movements. Furthermore we see "Lost In The Mind At Dawn" add dreamy guitar tones to its pillowing, yet inward-looking and contemplative Ambient x Deep Listening Music textures before "Lifted Into Wonder" continues on a similar path whilst adding more tender rhythmic bass pulses and plinkering guitar innocence to the mix whilst "Gone But Never Gone" comes full circle with its focus on an amalgamation of unprocessed solo piano works, lively intricate guitar movements and - once again - hefty pulses of organic bass. Defo a celebration of both sonic and artistic worlds Ludvig Cimbrelius lives in, this album is.

Alexandre David - Photogrammes [Collection Qb]

Released via the Quatuor Bozzini run imprint that is Collection Qb on December 6th, 2k24 is "Photogrammes", the latest full length CD album featuring three extended works, two of them split into respective sub-sections, written and conceived by composer Alexandre David. With Quatuor Bozzini performing the extended opening werk named "Quatuor A Cordes" we're entering a sonic realm of tense, tightly interlaced string works of corresponding, yet oftentimes off-kilter or outrightly dissonant tonal qualities which provide quite a few spine-tingling moments and, in parts or in full scope, could provide an excellent score for a grainy, rather dark movie to be made whereas the two parts of "Nanimissuat Ile-Tonnere" interpreted by the ensemble Plaisirs Du Clavecin combine a rather deep and stripped down take on Contemporary Classical composition with subdued, yet in parts also rather dramatic vocal performances - a combination probably more accessible and relatable for uninitiated listeners. For a closing the Orchestre De l'Agora conducted by Nicolas Ellis takes on the title bearing piece "Photogrammes" on a rather widescreen panoramic tip, creating majestic build-ups and beautifully arranged calmness both evoking memories of epic mountain ranges and long hikes through wild terrain and unscathed wilderness whilst still showcasing an underlying sense of the dangers and hazards such an environment inevitably provides. Recommended for fans and followers of Contemporary Classical music for a reason.

A New Line (Related) - A Quarterly Update On The Sadness [Sound In Silence 118]

Coming in from the Greek Ambient and beyond staple that is the Sound In Silence label only recently is "A Quarterly Update On The Sadness", the December 5th, 2k24 released album by A New Line (Related) which marks the latest solo outing by multi-active producer Andrew Johnson. With his first longplayer conceived for the label Johnson serves an offering of eight tracks rolled out over the course of roughly 39 minutes, opening with calm, comforting and rather washed out DubTechno atmospheres in "Calapsis" before progressing into an interesting set of hollow sounding percussions with his "3am Worry Sessions" which develops into a lovely, albeit oldskool'ish Minimal House tune of rather timeless qualities. The subsequent follow up that is the epicly long titled "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere In My Heart (There's A Star That Shines For You)" caters a deep and dubbed out IDM x Broken Techno crossover fragmented by rather experimental filter works whilst the "The Ballad Of Billy Kee" brings forth outerworldly rhythm signatures somehow evoking memories of classic Drill'n'Bass even though no filtered and cut up Amen breaks are present with the tune at any time and the "Only Star Loop" turns out to be a hovering, percussive and time-dissolving example of Future Tribal-informed early morning Electronica for highly advanced Balearic dancefloors. Furthermore "Lytham And Sound" harks back to tender DubTechno x Ambient Dub paired with lively, slighty Trance-inducing synth spirals and beautiful airy pads whereas the title track "A Quaterly Update On The Sadness" is an expertly crafted example of what could be described as RotterHague Electro(Techno) before "Left Tones" fully indulges in nebulous and misty Ambient Dub structures as the closing cut of what probably is the most DJ-friendly and dancefloor suitable album on Sound In Silence so far. Highly recommended.

baze.djunkiii Charts 02/2k25

01. Prince Chamba & Ital Sound - Secret Light / Melody Of Light [Bright Message Records 001]
Rediscovering our love for Reggae- and Dub-infused Downtempo music and floating (Neo)Dub this one was a very welcome discovery and worthwile addition to the collection with its longing, emotional vocals, organic basslines, TripHop-leaning beats and, ofc, a well seductive horn section provided by Ital Horns which make this a rather timeless 12" which is already sitting amongst our favorite cuts of the year for this genre. Highly recommended.

02. Minos & Just Mack - Apache EP [Vibez '93 025]
Jungle music was not necessarily my first love but one that had a tremendous impact on the musical trajectory yours truly followed afterwards, both in terms of sonic preferences as well as DJ-wise. This being said the continuous stream of modern Jungle / (Neo)Jungle records coming from labels like Vibez '93 is quite a blessing, with Minos & Just Mack paying homage to the raw and unhinged Darkside x Gangsta Jungle of yore on this yellow-transparent four tracker which, at times, even touches base with heavy DarkJungle and therefore is about to mash up any dancefloor for real. Serious business.

03. Noto - ∞ (Endless Loop Edition) [Noton 042]
This is a monumental piece of sound art. A 12x10" colour vinyl box set with each individual record sporting a set of 16 locked grooves - that's eight per side - for the avid fan and follower of highly experimental music, catering basically everything from pure sine tones to various noise sweeps, experimental crackles, low to high frequency modulations, Drone fragments and even experimental IDM x Electronica leaning beat loops. Conceptually meant to be listened to and experienced on a minimum setting of four turntables simultaneously this box set, which will you set back a in the triple digits, is probably, or most likely..., useless to the average listener but defo an interesting and worthwhile addition to the collection of the initiated or highly advanced vinyl head.

04. Sam Cosmic - Smic / Soukah - H2O [WobWob 007]
See review for details...

05. Sophie Hoffmann - A Meaningless Track For A Neglected Youth [Heartchore 002]
Is this to be taken serious? Or just a tongue-in-cheek sonic commentary on the state of the Business Techno / NeoRave scene of late? A raw and fast-paced, rather lo-fi-oriented take on what could be described as a fusion of underproduced HardTechno x Schranz accompanied by Spoken Word sequences speaking of more or less an existential teen crisis before cheesy HyperTrance melodies somewhat reminiscent of neon-shimmering anime soundtracks take over, providing quite an uplifting drive for the TikTok Rave crew. Is this ironic or just the purest form of Novelty Techno?
