Sascha Müller [Psychocandies P12-001]

Coming in straight from the vaults of the ever active Psychocandies label is this hyper-limited and hand-cut 12", bringing us two untitled track produced by the label head Sascha Müller himself. Put on the circuit as a limited edition of 10 - sic!!! - copies only we're entering the world of ecstatic, screaming AcidTechno / AcidTrance on the etched side which takes us back to era of anthems like "Turkish Bazar" and such whilst the flip enters reverb-heavy, pounding illegal warehouse rave territories garnished by more nerve-wrecking, psychotic Acid modulations for those who know. A highly collectible banger, this.

DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess - Meets New Soulmates At Nyege Nyege Deejay Laboratory [Jahmoni Music]

Coming straight from Munich's Jahmoni Music-camp is this lovely little mixtape release by DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess. Following her unique, multi-layered and tempo varied polyrhythms we see DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess presenting a tour de force through afro-eccentric influences, both traditional and contemporary, intense Spoken Word passages, minimalist and instrumental PostPunk, before taking a turn into highspeed Dub and twisted bass music, heavy Tribal House with oriental influences, even GhettoHouse, brutally swinging bass beats and dubbed out Space Jazz abstractions  as well as raw, unprocessed Underground Electro. Defo a well eclectic selection for all those who love a) cassette tapes for a reason and b) to dance their ass off far beyond any form of mainstream electronic music influences. This is one for all true music lovers out there.

Björk - The Gate (Official Video)

More minimalist than ever, yet more caring and loving than one might've expected for now.

Dälek - Endangered Philosophies [Ipecac Recordings]

Put on the circuit via Ipecac Recordings on September 1st, 2k17 is "Endangered Philosophies", the latest full length album release in the nearly 20 years spanning career of Mutant HipHop veterans Dälek who first appeared on the circuit back in 1998 and made waves solo as well as collaborating with the likes of Faust or Kevin Martin's Techno Animal in the past. With their new eleven track spanning longplayer the band consequently follows their path, fusing heavy distortions layers and dark'ish, eroding sound elements partly built from samples sent to the band by other bands and performers they've bonded with over a long time with precise, razorsharp raps and danger-inducing atmospheres as well as classic, yet obscured melodies from the Jungle scene as to be recognized by genre experts in the banging "Few Understand" whereas tunes like "The Son Of Immigrants" weigh in a melodic sense of the apocalpyse, embarking on a sonic journey towards dystopia in which - interestingly - the vocal aspect caters as just another tier within the mix, embedded in and partly overrun by a wall of noise, an amalgamation of growing intensity and emergency that should be a part of every collectors collection for a reason. Recommended HipHop and Rap for those in the know - especially when it comes to the more Postnuclear Blues-reminiscing "Battlecries".

Lali Puna - Two Windows [Morr Music]

Released via Morr Music on September 8th, 2k17 is "Two Windows", a new album marking the end of a seven years spanning release hiatus in the career of Lali Puna which have been making waves with their music since back in 1999. Coming back after such a long period does mean that some things have changed for sure and therefore we're seeing the band turning their heads towards a more dancefloor-friendly, partially even SynthPop influenced approach which is immediately evident in the seductive opener that is the the title track followed by sweet Electronic Pop vision "Deep Dream" which has been featured on these pages in early June. With "Come Out Your House" Lali Puna serve a masterly crafted amalgamation of Indietronica and bass music-infused elements, "The Frame" - a collaborational effort with Dntel - focuses on a floating, ethereal take on vocal-driven TechHouse, "Wear My Heart" somehow evokes memories of the classic "Moments In Love" without aiming to and the "Bony Fish feat. Mary Lattimore" is dripping with tender electronic romanticism and is one of the most  beautiful Indietronica songs we've come across in ages. Furthermore "Her Daily" weighs in a little innocence on a kinda of Dancehall-related Electronica foundation, "Wonderland" brings uplifting Pop aspects and beautiful crystalline synth works to advanced, intimate dancefloors, "Birds Flying High" alongside the great  Radioactive Man gets back into Tech-/MicroHouse territories with warm, all embracing basslines and delicately cut vocal snippets as well as beautiful melodies whilst "The Bucket" is another lively, yet tender banger for open air dances under a vernal sun. Working with Midori Hirano under heer MimiCuf moniker Lali Puna cater "Everything Counts", another delicate excursion into 4/4 territories before the final "Heads Up High" calmy waves goodbye in a more ballad'esque manner. A great comeback, this is!

Zeitkratzer & Elliot Sharp - Oneirika (Live At Berghain Berlin) [Zeitkratzer Productions]

Released in mid-June via their very own label Zeitkratzer Productions is Zeitkratzer's live interpretation of Elliott Sharp's composition "Oneirika" which was performed and premiered as a commissioned work for the Maerzmusik Festival 2014 at Berlin's legendary electronic music venue Berghain. As a composition inspired by the works of John Cage and based on Elliott Sharp's unique approach of refiltering and processing his self-generated musical manuscripts through Photoshop techniques the piece is played within one lengthy 47:43 minutes session but split into ten different sections which are, as far as pigeonholing into genres makes any sense in terms of modern contemporary music, influenced by the farmost leftfield and experimental realms of FreeJazz, quiet, score'esque passages contrasted by thundering brass and percussions, lovely melodic aspects going down into upright mayhem and highly dramatic chaos and many more, presenting eerie calmness - especially in the spine-tingling four minutes of section five -, intense, brooding precipitance and even parts reminiscent of (Neo)Classical sheet music like in section eight. Demanding, unique, complex - and defo another one perfectly fitting in the Zeitkratzer back catalogue.

Tony Cattano - Naca [Aut Records 033]

Going back to back to December 2016 with the review of Tony Cattano's "Naca" album which sat and arrived in our post box only recently. Cattano, as the leader and founder of the Naca quartet formed by him as well Emanuele Parrini, Matteo Anelli and Andrea Melani - all of them considered to be working at the top of Italy's thriving contemporary Jazz scene - delivers a wide-ranged menu of ten compositions with this one, starting from the very free combination of over the top uptempo passages and abrasive scrapings in the opener "Fior Di Conio" to the nicely swinging grooves of "Il Salto Del Pachiderma" and its stoic, yet fascinating bass motif to the more comical, slightly kitsch- and Psychedelia-covered approach of "Erva Mate" which literally unrolls a cinematic sequence within the listeners head. With "Colpo Die Fulmine" the quartet enters territories of heartfelt melancholia, "Krastan" is a complex, high speed arrangement for Film Noir-influenced dancefloors on the brink of madness whereas "Impro" weighs in more melancholia, sadness as well as a certain feel of danger whilst living up to the expectations evoked by the tunes title before "Un Piccolo Improvisto" gets back into a playful, yet experimental swing that brings old, hand-drawn cartoon TV series with a tongue-in-cheek attitude back to mind somehow and so does "Yellow He", defo the happiest cut on "Naca" with its fascinating slap bass progression and matching plucked string motif. Finally "Trappin'" is the coolest take on Cool Jazz with a certain swing and a grand portion of mid-track experimentation we've heard in ages whilst the closing tune "Settecamini" seems to be reminiscent of one of the great crooning Jazz standards we cannot remember the name of at this very point in time. An interesting, yet also demanding one from the Aut Records catalogue, this is.

Sascha Müller [Supersix Records Extra 057]

Another fresh one coming from the ever busy Sascha Müller is his latest eleven track album on his very own imprint named Supersix Records Extra which brings more electronic goodness for peak time dancefloors. The opening tune "The Piano Player" fuses a deep, lovely and uplifting piano motif with rolling, masterly crafted basslines and a stripped down Trance vibe, "Toxic Action" stampedes with a brutal HardTechno attitude and Tribal influences, "Triple A" gets into astoundingly groove-oriented oldskool House territories, presenting raw Latin-loops and classy pads before the "Voltmeter" explores minimalistic, yet grinding and kinda off-rhythm Techno with a quite mechanical attitude. Experiencing a "Wiedergeburt" - 'rebirth' in English - is like a lively, positive trip into a technoid, Acid-infused la-la-land bordering on what once was called Intelligent Techno whilst coming "Down To Earth" is more of a spiralling DarkTrance journey with a well psychedelic twist and beautiful string layers, "Hurra Die Katz Ist Tot" presents quite a bit of dark humour titlewise as well as a hefty portion of fast-paced TribalTechno sporting intense bleep modulations for concrete underground clubs before "Sternenschweif" brings back storming, yet stripped down AcidTrance for illegal, large scale warehouse raves. Next up we're entering the "Astral Zone", a zone in which stomping HardHouse and Techno mix and mangle to create a new musical breed, the "Acid Sky" is a kaleidoscopic, well repetetive and reverb-heavy Acid affair and the final cut  "Action Response" weighs in more classic, functional ClubTechno for tool-loving DJ's out there. Quality.

Sascha Müller [Sascha Müller Music 1000024]

Fresh on the circuit is Sascha Müller's latest digital two-track single which brings us more greatness from his studio vaults. With the opening cut "Badespass" the Meppen-based producer gets down on stripped down, lively and positive MinimalTechno whilst catering ever morphing, Acid (Not Acid) modulations that probably would mix well with the tunes from the famous Studio-series or Andreas Dorau's "Telefon Remixes" on the legendary German Ladomat  label whereas "Day Of Thunder" also relies on a stripped down killer groove and a simple yet dancefloor functional main motif that keeps crowds of MinimalTechno loving headz  busy and buzzing until the morning light. Good stuff.

Various Artists - Monika Werkstatt [Monika Enterprise]

Released via Gudrun Gut's very own label Monika Enterprise in mid-June, 2k17 is "Monika Werkstatt", a seventeen track showcase compilation which sprung from a collective gathering and workshop throughout which all the featured artists and musicians like Gudrun Gut herself, Pilocka Krack, AGF, Sonae, Lucrecia Dalt, Barbara Morgenstern and many more met somewhere in the German nowhere of the Uckermark to collaboratively record sounds and soundscapes, voices and musical foundations which were later polished, finished and re-arranged by other members of the group to give them their final form and structure. The results are - as one might have guessed from the array of artists involved - as diverse as homogenic at the same time, incorporating Electronica as well as more of a SloMotion House approach and pure sonic experimentation beyond genre borders, all covered in a thick portion of blurred, autumnal melancholia and mostly touching the more or less vocal sporting edge of the genre often referred to as Indietronica at one point or the other. Highlights to be found here are Lucrecia Dalt's 4/4-focused slomo effort "Blindholes",  the tripping, captivating, robotic yet ethereal Electronica Hop of Gudrun Gut's "Repetition" and the deep Acid Phonk of  Pilocka Krach's "Who's Afraid Of Justin Bieber", obviously paying homage to one of Michael Jackson's biggest hits in a clever, tongue-in-cheek manner whereas AGF's "Ninjaness" (ab)uses a take on dry, mechanical UltraPhonk inspired by both Clicks'n'Cuts as well as Rhythm Industrial to drive advanced dancefloors crazy for a reason and Sonae's "Witchcraft" combines Clicks'n'Cuts with a haunting Deep Listening approach. Varied, yet interesting.

01. Quantic presents Flowering Inferno - Shuffle Them Shoes feat. Hollie Cook [Tru Thoughts]
It's been quite a while since I've added a new Flowering Inferno 7" single to my collection but as I'm re-discovering my love for Dub & Reggae these days this one is a must have as "Shuffle Them Shoes" weighs in a dead cool and groovy, Rocksteady-oriented riddim accompanied by beauteous, catchy vocals laid down by Hollie Cook in a beyond Reggae vintage manner whereas the flipside and its "All I Do Is Think About You (Dub)" combines classic, slo-mo Dub structures with a sweet string section and ethereal, slightly warped vocals for lessons in deep bass meditation. Big one, this.

Michael Pisaro / Hakon Stene & Kristine Tjøgersen - Asleep, Street, Pipes, Tones [Hubro Music]

Released on June 16th, 2k17 via the Norwegian imprint Hubro Music is "Asleep, Street, Pipes, Tones" by the American composer Michael Pisaro, who sees seventeen of his - untitled, but numbered - works being interpreted by Hakon Stene & Kristine Tjøgerson on this album. Starting off with a sequence of pulses of varying, yet electroacoustic nature we're taken into an abstract, hypnotizing realm of sound incorporating both excerpts of droning Field Recordings as well as rich, klaxon-esque tones as well as a combination of both, Isolationist Ambient, eerie fragments of singing choirs covered in layers of wind noises as well as melodic, melancholia inducing wind instrument minimalism - probably played on a french horn in "IV". More ultra calm sonic sequentialism mixed with beauteous Ambient traditions is to be found in "VI + VII", a tune that later drifts off into more retrofuturist sound aesthetics, given the noises and movements present resemble those attributed to computational processes in 60s and 70s sci-fi flics. These sounds, alongside bass-focused drones are as well present in "VIII + IX", maybe one of the most intense cuts on this album, before a surprising, because unexpected, combination of acoustic guitar and slowly fading tones provides a more naturalistic, organic touch to the longplays progress in "X". An ultimate example of minimalist autumnal melancholia is provided with the somehow Post-PostRock resembling "XII" catering even a little bit of a film noir attitude whereas "XIII" serves highly intense, dramatic climaxes, "XIV" indulges in more romantic aspects of super stripped down instrumentation which find a proper continuation in the subsequent, ethereal "XV" bringing nothing but heavenly choirs to the table for a short while before the final tunes on "Asleep, Street, Pipes, Tones" are grouped around the theme of single piano tones and an overall feel of wanted, well welcoming loneliness. Highly recommended, this!

Dr. NoiseM - Studio Works 23 [Dr. NoiseM Tapes]

Put on the circuit by the ever active, never sleeping Noize-producer Dr. NoiseM is "Studio Works 23", the - guess what -  twentythird full on album release in this ongoing series, catering a thirteen tracks load of new and previously unreleased tracks from his archive. Opening with "Liberation" we're taken by surprise as we're entering a Deep Listening-oriented sonic realm that's even about to please die-hard Ambient headz due to its calm and steady flow before "Melting XMA" combines static Noize pulses with electric buzzes and even melodic variations that end up in chattering chaos and randomly cut interferences. "Narcotic Species" comes across as a dark, ever moving science fiction void of a well threatening nature, "No No" weighs in heavy distortions and squealing HarshNoize brutalism with bleepy influences and alien background sequences of possibly modular nature, "Noise Noise" picks up on storming bass distortions and an overall feel of eerieness whereas "Now And Then" goes deep into Cold / Death Ambient series whilst presenting another take on shifting respiratory sounds we've seen Dr. NoiseM use a lot in his series 'The CDr A-B-C', this time combining those trademark sounds with carefully crafted, floating Ambient structures. The "Robot Poetry" is an abstract take on speech program abuse, "Schizofrenia" presents 47 seconds of violent Gabba / Hardcore before we enter a brutal HarshNoize slaughterhouse named "Schlachthaus" - the German translation of the term -, grinding our brain cells to bits and pieces. Furthermore "Shit Happenz" relies on decent Ambient floatations paired with raw, distorted sub-frequencies of a quite storming, overwhelming nature, "Spacepost" amalgamates echoes of outer space Electronica with sparse, spaced out modulations of modular origin to a score'esque sci-fi result, "Street Wind" caters eerie, twisted Spoken Word poetry from the realms of the dead and the concluding cut named "Rings Of Uranus" serves a menu of dark'ish, yet beautiful Deep Listening Music for those who know. Good stuff!
