Andrade - Face De Bouc [Dessous Recordings 094 Promo]

Andrade is not only a fresh face for Dessous Recordings, delivering the labels 94th 12" outing but a relatively fresh face to the electronic music production scene at all. Although the main track on his label debut is D'Julz' rework of the title track "Face De Bouc" which a is tool'ish but still ultra-effective piece of deep, rolling House music that'll be loved by all those DJ's out there longing for tunes to create ecstatic, long-building sets in endless nights - have tunes by Jerome Sydenham or Dennis Ferrer in mind to accompany this rework! -, the original version on B1 is not to be missed as well due to its classic attitude that's close to some mid-nineties vibes spread by the likes of DJ Sneak back in those days: hot, horny and featuring a sexy, discoid bassline. Finally we see a track named "Old Rules" as B2, this one being on a similar but slightly darker tip serving some uplifting synth-figures, danger zone bass chords and a snare driven breakdown that is hot as hell. Recommended.

Tigerskin - Everybody Loves Ollie [Audiomatique Recordings 040 Promo]

Tigerskin is back for 2010 with his first ever release on Audiomatique Recordings, an epic mixture of pumping TechHouse, a bit of glitz, alienated strings sounding like programmed by Jean-Michel Jarre or any of those early Synth pioneers and hypnotic Techno. The name of this tune? "Everybody Loves Ollie" and whoever this is Tigerskin loves him right from the heart. That's evident. On the flip there's a tuned named "Carlswood" to be found which pleases all lovers of minimalistic HypnoTech with its ever spiralling sounds and long build-up sequences - a timeless piece for now and ever which is not to be missed for any reasons. That's what proper Techno should sound like.

Health - Die Slow *Clark Remix / Before Tigers *Gold Panda Remix [City Slang Promo]

Fresh on the circuit via City Slang is this strictly limited 12" featuring two brand new remixes of tunes taken out of Health's 2009-album "Get Color". Whilst Warp's shooting star Clark does what everyone would expect from him when delivering a refix - serving a typical, heavy but surprisingly uplifting mixture of syncopic Broken Electronica that might appeal to Dubstep fans as well - it's Gold Panda's rework of "Before Tigers" that wins here due to its deep, blurry and kinda Dial'esque attitude that is about to be loved by all those jocks up for the advanced variation of 4/4-driven electronic music. Nice one.

Bratze - Korrektur Nach Unten & Die Notwendigkeit Einer Übersetzung [Audiolith]

Bratze, the successful collaborational project of Click CLick Decker-mastermind Kevin Hamann and Norman Koldziej a.k.a. Der Tante Renate, are about to unleash their second full length album via Audiolith and it's gonna smash ElectroPunk- and Indie-floors alike and it's gonna smash 'em heavy. Compared to their debut "Kraft" introducing their work in 2007 it's evident that they've left the path of pure banging club music these days and emphasize on lyrics this time as there's only one instrumental track to be found on this ten track LP. This is for good, coze that makes them tracks more accessible and underpins the anthemic, catchy character of Bratze's music. Prognosis: better sales rates, more airplay and about to reach a broader audience than ever. Top notch.

A Light @ The End Of The Dubstep Tunnel?

Those of you following these pages regularly surely have recognized that I've been more than sceptical about the recent state of Dubstep scene but these days I've seen a bit of light @ the end of tunnel. First of all there's the double-A-side 12" of Eprom and Eskmo put on the circuit via Warp as their cat.no. 228 which is surely a remarkable piece of music. The next one to check out these days is the "Nu Levels E.P." by both Dark Garage- / Sublow-pioneers J Da Flex and El-B on the reactivated Ghost Recordings which is now alive als Ghost Recordings Thriller Funk with its first release. If you loved their output back in the days you'll love this one as well as it perfectly transfers the stripped down minimal feel into 2010 half tempo.
And finally there's one undiscovered talent to mention - Hamburg-based Jay Spyda handed some unreleased tracks to me just for getting some feedback and those are way more fresh than most of the Dubstep 12"es I've come across throughout the last months or even year. Someone's gotta check this guy out.

[Echo:Mirage] - Kybernetics [Super 6 Records 049.5]

Cat.no. 049.5 of Super 6 Records - the full length album "Kybernetics" - is served by an artist with the kind of cryptic name [Echo:Mirage] which seems to make an attempt to transfer music cybernetic entities of the future might possibly like into the electronic music of today. What comes out of this attempt are complex patterns somewhat in between of what might be named as Intelligent Techno, 'troity arrangements and mostly slow, robotic beat structures - groovewise Electro-related as well as influenced by classic Electronica. Will surely appeal to experienced listeners of advanced electronic music.

Death On Glamour - Apression [Pharmacom Records 062b]

Joel Lennox a.k.a. Death On Glamour is as well responsible for Pharmacom Records' cat.no. 062b, another 12 track album exploring a similar musical terrain as his latest outing but going even further in representing the Illbient side of his production as well as crossing over into the dancefloor world of experimnetal Electro-influenced BigBeat that has been brought to us by labels like the former Berlin-based Timing Recordings or - at least partly - early TCR, City Of Angels or the long gone Logic offspring Fresh Flavour.

Death On Glamour - Ignition Spark [Pharmacom Records 062a]

Serving cat.no. 062a of Pharmacom Records is Joel Lennox a.k.a. Death On Glamour, who is releasing an eighteen track showcase focusing on a style to be filed under the flag of weird Breakbeat'ish Electronica with a slightly Industrial feel. Neither really dancefloor fitting nor made for homelistening these tracks are somewhere in between and come up with a kind of dark'ish, sterile and somewhat artificial attitude due to the use of specific mid frequencies and the lack of deep basslines. Some years ago music like this would've been found on labels like the Staalplaat sister imprint Stichting Mixer or Sub Rosa so if these names are still remembered and well appreciated, you've to check this one as well.

The Black Eyed Peas - Imma Be Rocking That Body [Interscope]

Fresh from the Black Eyed Peas-camp via Interscope comes the David Guetta-produced megatrack "Imma Be Rocking That Body" - a fusion of loads of various styles that real music lovers don't want to hear on the dancefloor. Well, it's a Guetta-production so this one has to be working commercial crowds not knowing better. What's in it? A bit of Electro - average - , some oldskool'ish Breakbeats - better - , some commercial ElectroHouse - does anybody want that anymore? - and a lot of autotune, which is so 2000 and late that it's unbearable. When Black Eyed Peas left HipHop they did not leave it for good. Total bullshit. Do not buy. do not support.

Donnacha Costello - Before We Say Goodbye E.P. [Poker Flat Recordings Promo]

It's only a few days since Donnacha Costello's forthcoming album "Before We Say Goodbye", scheduled via Poker Flat Recordings, has been reviewed on these pages and it's only now to be announced that there'll be a 12" vinyl featuring four of nine album tracks for DJ-use. A1 is the ultimate beauty of "Leaving Berlin" which can be filed as
this years Armchair Techno anthem so far, A2 track "No-one Is Watching" is on a laid back (Neo)Detroit-influenced tip, opening spaces for classy chords and melody work, "Roll It Out" is to be found on B1, a slowed-down but heavily pumping tune showing a nice contrast between its more abstract, uplifting melody and dark'ish percussion work whilst the final B2 piece "Stretching Time" is the perfect closing tune after a long night out: calm, warm, featuring deep strings and some friendly bleeping sounds waving goodbye to exhausted clubbers. Excellent choice and defo a must have.

Sascha Müller - Untitled [Pharmacom Records 030]

It's quite rare these days that one receives a promotional piece of music that is released on tape / cassette and it's even more rare that a release is able to puzzle the one about to review it like this one does. Reason one is the cat.no. as Pharamcom Records, which is releasing digital formats most of the times, has already reached 60+ digits so I'm not sure whether this one has been postponed for ages or if this is an older release I haven't come across yet. Reason two is: the music. What's to be found on the A-side is a steady bass drone, maybe a low frequency sine wave, accompanied by a few swampy Ambient flavored sounds shimmering through, like a field recording focusing on sounds super far far away with an overall loudness level next to zero so I had to turn up my system quite high to even hear a thing properly. Recording error? I dunno. On the flip the sound quality is much better and we see Sascha Müller experimenting with static Noise and Drones in a - surprise! - very calm and nearly ruminant way. Deep listening music for experts, which is limited to only 30 copies world wide.

Sascha Müller - Antje E.P. [Super 6 Records 049]

Upcoming on Super 6 Records is Sascha Müller's "Antje E.P.", a three track release dealing with several aspects of electronic dance music. Whilst "Plasmids In Motion" can be described as deep piece of Armchair Techno - some might prefer the early 90s term Intelligent Techno - featuring some chilled and relaxed piano chords, the bassdrums of "Pax" are quite raw and unprocessed, accompanied by 'troity strings, some House-flavored chords as well and a nice, hypnotic Acid line bubbling in the background. Finally there's "Traumphase", a thrilling mixture of laid back Electro and driving Acid elements, which is my favorite track out of these three for sure. Nice one.

Gotan Project - La Gloria [¡Ya Basta! Records]

It's the latest release of ¡Ya Basta¡ Records that has been sitting in my P.O. box only yesterday. Released under the name of "La Gloria" as 10" pressing this latest work of Gotan Project will be appreciated by many fans, loving the fusion of Tango and styles of contemporary electronic music, Downbeat / TripHop in this specific case. But still this in not my cup of tea as I don't feel the Tango at all and I'm truly not the biggest fan of any kind of World Music vs. Electronics crossover movement. Not even the uptempo vision of Ninja Tune's Poirier on remix duties here can change my mind on this topic although his re-fix might work well within any kind of Kuduro / Baile Funk / Freestyle context and could be fitted in some UK Funky or Dubstep set as well although it takes some jocks with oversized balls to take that risk.

David Forbes meets William Daniel - Devils Theory [Tetsuo 114]

Cat.no. 114 of Tetsuo is "Devils Theory", a collaborational work between David Forbes and William Daniel which deliver a storming piece about to set Trance floors on fire. Coming up with a stompy, quite technoid attitude before the epic, slightly metallic sounding breakdown this tune is the one taken out of the latest Tetsuo-releases that shows the biggest crossover potential towards the Techno scene and might be used as secret weapon by some of the Techno jocks out there to add some extra melodic spice to their sets. Featured on the flip there's a remix by TNR which is defo the weaker tune on this 12" delivering not more than average sounds, standard basslines and the usual string arrangements. Check out for the original tune.

Death On Glamour - Detroit Techno [Super 6 Goodies 072]

Forthcoming via Super 6 Goodies is Death On Glamour's first outing on this digital imprint. Title track "Detroit Techno" is exactly on the musical tip that its name suggests and serves a raw and uncut journey to the ruffer edge of this style - if u love the sound of Underground Resistance u'll be as well appreciating this one. "Astron Eidos", the second track featured on here explores the realms of dark, cold and sci-fi flavored Electro that comes up with a very mechanical, robotic attitude, just like if the sounds were taken from a futuristic production line. Recommended.

Donnacha Costello - Before We Say Goodbye [Poker Flat Recordings]

Announced for release on march 15th via Poker Flat Recordings is "Before We Say Goodbye", the new longplay album out of the studio of irish producer Donnacha Costello - the man behind labels like Look Long and Minimise, the latter especially known for the highly acclaimed conceptual "Colourseries" introducing a new sound somewhere in between hypnotizing Minimal Techno and the warm, melodic vision of so-called (Neo)Trance. Being a man of conceptual work the basic idea behind "Before We Say Goodbye" is a limitation of sound sources, using - apart from software used for drum processing - only three pieces of outboard equipment: Roland SH-101, Sequential Circuits Prohet 5 Rev2 and New England Digital Synclavier II. But these pieces are more than enough when used by the right hands and so the musical vision served on this album surely embraces the infamous "Colourseries" sound and crossbreeds it with Armchair Techno, sweet seductive melodies and evident influences of House Music. The result is an album that well works in residential areas, on car stereos and club environments albeit none of these tracks are really fitted for peak time use. But in the hands of well experienced jocks working crowds of true music lovers in smaller specialists venues each single track is able to open ppls hearts and to brighten up their life for at least a few minutes. Musicwise this is not the typical Poker Flat-release but defo one that's nearly impossible to dislike.

Talla 2 XLC feat. Skysurfer - Terra Australis [Addicted To Trance 002]

Fresh Tetsuo sister label Addicted To Trance recently came up with its cat.no. 002 - "Terra Australis", which is a collaborational work between label owner and Techno Club legend Talla 2 XLC and Skysurfer. On a thrilling speed this one seems to be more driving than recent Tetsuo-releases, featuring some acidic lines, drumrolls and straightforward claps underneath huge string arrangements - a true peak time tune for sure. On the flip we see Jorn Van Deynhoven on remix duties who serves a version more banging and made not only for big rooms but for arenas. This remix requests fog and laser beams.

Dead Western - Suckle At The Supple Teats Of Time [Discorporate Records]

Fresh and forthcoming via Discorporate Records is the second full-length album of Troy Mighty a.k.a. Dead Western, a ten track and 47:07 album that'll mostly appeal to an audience following the sound of so-called Dark Folk and even in this very left-field genre Dead Western manages to stick out as something very special. This mostly is due to his specific voice, a very dark, sometimes soughing one that even seems to be slowed down on purpose but isn't, topping a main musical foundation of picked, acoustic guitar partly accompanied by bass, violin, kazoo and a few other, mostly acoustic instruments. Best listened to in lonely, windy, autumnal nights with no-one to talk to but a bottle of red wine as company.
