Detroit Grand Pubahs – Nuttin’ Butt Funk [DetEleFunk 009]

October 2nd sees the release of the new Detroit Grand Pubahs studio album entitled „Nuttin’ Butt Funk“ – no spelling mistake here but(t) a tribute to their neverending love and fascination for female behinds, booties, asses whatever. Once again they deliver proper work and take you on a journey through various facets of what electronic dance music has to offer. This kind of widespread variety hard to be found these days includes some weirdo skits as well as proper Chicago Basement style, Electro in its very original meaning which is not what the colourful hype scene of hipsters refers to as „Electro“ without having a clue – here you gonna get the pure stuff, straightforward uptempo Techno, Detroit’ish beauty and melancholy, plus some style crossovers and experimental excursions, that hopefully will be apreciated by many – listeners and DJ’s alike. Defo recommended and to be regarded as one of the few important albums that are released each year.

Halma – Broad Peak [Sunday Service Promo]

It’s been two long years now since Halma released their excellent „Back To Pascal“ on Hamburg’s Sunday Service but now they’re back with a new longplayer. „Broad Peak“ can be described as none less than stunning, still dealing with loads of deserted melancholia but leaving alone the Dub-flavored aspects that ruled „Back To Pascal“, instead turning towards a more organic direction that most of us will recognize as PostRock although Halma are likely to name their sound as Slowcore. If you’ve never heard of Halma before check them out immediately, if you already loved their last album just buy this one blindfolded. One track to check: „Montreux“.

Format: B – Steam Circuit [Highgrade Records]

Like (Minimal) Techno ? Then you might check Format: B’s new album which is to be released under the name of „Steam Circuit“ on Highgrade Records in early October as eight track 2x12“ or full length CD album. The latter comes as continuous DJ-mix that additionally features some of Format: B’s formerly released and quite successfull tunes. This sprouting mix is about to take the hearts of their followers and regular clubbers alike by storm as it easily showcases the thrill and energy behind their production work that regularly sets dancefloors on fire when blasted through a proper club p.a. . Proper stuff, especially for all those longing for a bit of peaktime feel while being at home or somewhat stuck in their car, driving on the german autobahn.

Just a list...

...of classic 7"es I bought today:

Chron Gen - Outlaw [Secret Records / 1982]
A-Heads - Forgotten Hero [Bluurg Records / 1983]
X-ray Apex - I Am A Cliche [Virgin Records / 1977]
Crass - Sheep Farming In The Falklands [Crass Records]
Crass - Nagasaki Nightmare / Big A Little A [Crass Records]
Crass - Reality Asylum / Shaved Women [Crass Records]
Crass - How Does It Feel [Crass Records]
Hazell Dean - Searchin [Bellaphon / 1983]

Seems that my new love for PostPunk and other old, more experimental stuff is steadily growing and the deeper I dig the more there is to discover for someone who was brought up on a diet of AcidHouse and other electronic stuff since the age of 8 in 1986. The more stuff from that past era I listen to the more impressed am I by that massive energy and musical creativity that is provided by those, mostly underground records. Guess it won't take too long 'til this comes out as a new style to DJ for me as I'm defo planning to broaden my musical spectrum when it comes to spinning records and have spun some PostPunk / (No)Wave / etc.-sets already and got some good reactions on that.

Burnski - New Road FM [Dessous Recordings 083 Promo]

All lovers of quality House music are recommended to check out Burnski's forthcoming four tracker "New Road FM" on Dessous Recordings coze this is not to be missed at all. No matter if the North England-based talent provides a classic cut like the decent "Fertile" or an Acid-driven primetime banger like "NoseBonker" to be found on B1 and referring to the jackin' Chicago House-days, all of them four tunes are top notch quality and will not leave my box for ages.

Spinor - Moloch / Budoka - Ritual [Tilt Recordings 008]

Germany's finest Techno Drum'n'Bass-imprint Tilt Recordings delivers quality again with its cat.no. 008 featuring Spinor's "Moloch" and Budoka's "Ritual" on the flip. "Moloch" was making waves in the so-called Techno Drum'n'Bass-scene way before it was released and one easily recognizes why. Hectic, ultra-percussive beats alongside dark athmospheres, some quirky, acidic midrange arrangements plus a hoover'esque Techno-sound dropping in here and there that is well known from the early 90s Hardcore/Gabba-scene are causing mayhem on the floor and work peaktime crowds well. "Ritual" on the flip fuses Neurofunk with some middle eastern- / oriental-samples which might sound weird at first but is as fresh as fresh can be and for sure a nice and unheard variation within the realms of Drum'n'Bass. U need this.

Rosenstolz - Gib Mir Sonne [Universal Music]

First of all I've never been a fan of Rosenstolz at all, mostly due to their lyrics and their female lyricists voice - too sweet, too Pop for me. This goes for their new 12" "Gib Mir Sonne" the same, but there's one remix that sticks out for good. German Techno pioneer Westbam delivers a nice ElectroBreaks re-lick that leaves out most of the vocal parts but adds some cool uplifting piano sounds that'll work perfectly with all folks who've been raving since day one and still dig the original Oldskool vibe. Forget the rest as Westbam's remix is the only relevant version to be found here.

Steve Bug presents Bugnology 3 [Poker Flat Recordings]

Steve Bug returns to the compilation circuit with his third "Bugnology" mix album on his very own Poker Flat Recordings-imprint and this time he dives deeper into sound than ever. Instead of jackin' minimalism there's a whole lot of partly dubby House grooves and Detroit Techno influences on the agenda this time of which Mr. Brügesch creates a very special, moody vibe that'll very fit in late night underground warehouse clubs. Although there's no obvious uber-hit featured within the 21, partly re-rubbed and re-edited, tracks of this mix, all advanced and experienced electronic music lovers will catch up on the vibe quickly and start their own living room dance whilst listening to "Bugnology 3", while all those creepy GHB-induced "3 Tage Wach"-ravers are about to skip through and move to the next boring so-called Minimal Techno compilation or mix, coze this one is way too complex for narrow minded druggies. Defo make sure to check out track 20 carefullly - the oldskool'ish but still rockin' "Inside Out" by Kink & Neville Watson.

Märtini Brös - The MB Factor [Poker Flat Recordings]

Quite fresh on Poker Flat Recordings is the new, retrospective Märtini Brös album named "The MB Factor", celebrating their 10 years anniversary with a non-stop mix of their hits and classics alongside some re-edits of older tunes plus new material as well. Covering the full musical spectrum DJ Cle & Mike Vämp - the two men behind the Märtini Brös project - provide a journey through the realms of more ElectroPop influenced sound to dark'ish Minimal Techno and back and end up with "Der Weg (Restored)", a tune that clearly refers to a pre-Techno era in Germany when bands like Rheingold or Kraftwerk ruled what was known as electronic music back then... A nice mixture this is and worth its price.

Btw - watch out for a forthcoming interview I did with the Märtini Brös. which is to be published in the next issue of the Glasgow-based global dance music magazine M8 Magazine!

16.08.2008 A Tribute To Madonna - The Bastard Files @ Byte.FM

16.08.2008 A Tribute To Madonna - The Bastard Files @ Byte.FM

Madonna – Popstar, Ikone, Powerfrau.

Spillsbury - Lass Mich [Raboisen Records]

Hamburg-based ElectroPunk-outfit Spillsbury are coming up with their new single "Lass Mich", due to be released via Raboisen Records on august 8th. Whilst the original mix cites a mixture of 80s-flavored Punk, some Ingenious Dilletantes-influences and ElectroClash musicwise, lyricwise it deals with the story of a de-socialisation on purpose that seems to be even more hopeless than Punks original "No Future!"-attitude. A remix by Decalicious is to be found here, too, which deals with an Ed Banger'esque / Digitalism-like NuRave thingy for the dancefloor, but the original is ftw.

DJ Berkin – Long Tunnel [Super 6 Goodies 046]

DJ Berkin’s „Long Tunnel“ is cat.no 046 of Super 6 Goodies, accompanied by his track „It Changes Your Chip“. Whilst the title track can be filed under the flag of uplifting Techno that will be loved by all those who are old enough to have taken part in the mid-90’s Love Parades, the second one to be found here comes as stomping, partly Latin-influenced Oldskool House with a catchy melody and some hands in the air drumrolls. If there’s anyone who still remembers DJ Enrique’s stuff on Ladomat / Playhouse and loves his sharp percussioned style you’re recommended to check out this one as well.
