file under: Drum'n'Bass

JDB – Jungle / Drum’n’Bass.

Knarf Relloem Trinity [Audiolith Records 042]

The Knarf Relloem Trinity recently hit the stores with their new four track E.P. on Hamburg’s Audiolith Records and simultaneously they present a new, fresh style in their work which might be described as Ironic House with a bit of Disco attitude, Titles like „Hans Is Playing House“ featuring Hans Nieswandt, „Gender Song“ featuring Benjamin Wild or „Supermarkt Is Ne Bildung“ are not only deep and groovy but need DJ’s with a weird sense of humour to play them out to a big audience, but when blasting through a club p.a. these are the ones to enlighten all grim faces out there. Cheesy and cool.

Verve Remixed 4 [Verve]

The infamous label Verve Records is about to release the fourt issue of their „Verve Remixed“-series soon and put four of the featured tracks out on the promo circuit with this sought after 12“. We see Nina Simone remixed by Mike Nangini, Marlena Shaw by Diplo, James Brown reworked by the master Kenny Dope himself and Dinah Washington’s „Cry Me A River“ in a version by Truth & Soul – all high quality relicks as one might already guess and a rat race that is clearly won by Dinah Washington due to the remix’ James Bond-like intro and overwhelming string arrangements. Well done, folks.

Ruff Sqwad – RSMD [No Hats No Hoods 002]

Yeah. It’s been a bit since Ruff Sqwad hit the floors with their last 12“ but now they’re back with a massive Grime-banger on the relatively fresh No Hats No Hoods-imprint that’s nuffink less than a must have. „RSMD“ means Ruff Sqwad Man Dem and comes in their typical stakkato riddim, this time produced by Dirty Danger who lyrically kills p.a.’s with his ultra-compressed and slightly distorted beats that are meant to blow ears and speakers for sure. On the flip finally we get a full vocal version of „Xtra“ which has been released as riddim only whitelabel some time ago plus another, more minimalistic tune running under the name of „Front Back“

Koen Lebens – Napolitanzer [Strøm Recordings 003]

Piped for august 2008 on the Amsterdam-based imprint Strøm Recordings is this lil’ 12“ – Koen Lebens’ „Napolitanzer“ – and it’s about to kick some ass. The original version is some bouncin’ Minimal Techno stuff spiced with some quite ravey stabs that have been already loved by the likes of Adam Beyer, Chloe, Valentino Kanzyani and others, whilst the remix work of Fokko Versloot, Sander May & Tom Noah on the flip is deeper, more hypnotic tip and about all late night dancers. To be filed as quality Club Techno and one that sticks out from the huge bunch of so-called Minimal releases arriving at yr local store each and every week.

Bratze – Kraft [Riptide Recordings]

New on Riptide Recordings is Bratze’s album „Kraft“ which has been released on Hamburg’s Audiolith Records before, but never made it to vinyl til now. Ten tracks to be found on this album somewhat between ElektroPunk, Indie and so-called NDW (= Neue Deutsche Welle which roughly translates as „New German Wave“ , an 80s style known as the commercial, more Schlager-like version of the Ingenious Dilletantes / PostPunk movement ), their beats are slightly simplistic and a bit distorted, their attitude DIY and party non stop. And that’s the reason why they’re praised as pure party machines not only in their hometown Hamburg and northern Germany but all over the place - wherever they’ve played or they’re about to play in the future, they’ve come to tear the club up. Yes.

Lil Wayne – Got Money feat. T –Pain / Lollipop RMX feat. Kanye West [Universal Records]

Lil Wayne’s back with his new banger „Get Money“ featuring T-Pain on vocal duties, serving an update of his typical, minimal 808 beats-driven style plus vocodered vox that is about to drive ladies mad these days. Nothing wrong with that and nothing either with the cool „Lollipop“ re-lick that features Kanye West on the mic and works well best on tiny late night floors. Nice.

Elaste Vol. 2: Space Disco mixed by Tom Wieland

Compost Records recently unleashed the second issue of their stunning "Elaste" compilation series, focusing on the early roots of (partly) electronic dance music - the sound that finally took off with Giorgio Moroder's "I Feel Love" and became known as Euro Boogie, Disco or Cosmic, depending on which influences weigh in more than others. For this compilation Tom Wieland of 7 Samurai-fame is diggin' the crates deeply for a flawless but still rough DJ mix that features repetitive proto-technoid tunes as Curt Cress' "Sundance" alongside cheesy anthem's like Two man Sound's "Que Tal America" - maybe the best known track in this mix apart from Rufus & Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" in Frankie Knuckles "Hallucinogenik Version" of 1991 - plus two of his own tracks produced under his Panoptikum-moniker that pay respect to that long gone era and well fit into the mix for sure. If you decide to purchase this one it'll defo be a good choice, not only for music history reasons but for a bunch of good old music that makes you happy, no matter if you're at home alone, in the car or having a sweet lil' in-house party at yr place.

James Nidecker & Roger Valdez - $.e.x. [Strøm Recordings 002]

Released in 2007 but still worth a few lines is cat.no. 002 of Strøm Recordings - James Nidecker & Roger Valdez' "$.e.x.". While the original mix is on a quite bouncing, high quality minimalism tip with a good bunch of Chicago House feel, Secret Cinema's re-lick on the flipside stays close to the Chicago vibe but adds a more ecstatic, technoid flava that perfectly works in late night basement sets. Good one.

Iron Soul – Whateva / Wow [Southside Legacy 014]

Southside Legacy’s Iron Soul is back to tear up all the Niche-crew with two more workouts – both quite uptempo, string-loaden and backed by some quirky, LFO-triggered basslines made for maximum impact on the dancefloor. Although Niche is not that popular in Germany these days as it should be and there’s a lot of groundwork to promote this new musical movement both tunes are about to drive punters mad. Killer.

N.E.R.D. – Everyone Nose / Spaz [Interscope]

Taken off their forthcoming album „Seeing Sounds“ is N-E-R-D’s new double A-side 12“ „Everyone Nose / Spaz“ which is a massive surprise as the beats of „Everyone Nose“ sound like a proper re-interpretation of Drum’n’Bass / Choppage mixed up with more experimental DJ Shadow tunes of his „Entroducing“-period and the beatalistic excellence of classics like Black Jazz Chronicles’ „Snooky’s Spirit“ – not an easy one but defo one to tear up any advanced Phusion-floor. „Spaz“ on the flip is of the same kind, but more Drum’n’Bass-flavored and will be loved by all JDB-headz that have been around in the heydays of the movement.

Lady Gaga – Just Dance [Streamline Records / Interscope]

Put on the promo circuit recently and probably on heavy rotation in more commercial House venues is Lady Gaga’s filtered attack „Just Dance“ that somehow sounds like partly reminiscing to the late 90’s anthem „One More Time“ as it brings a similar feeling back. Four mixes are to be found here, all proper uplifting and defo working well as primetime bangers, plus the originall and instrumental version that might experience some late night airing on different radio channels.

Neurov - Lucky Bastard E.P. [Pharmacom Records 041]

Cat.no. 041 of Pharmacom Records is Neurov's "Lucky Bastard E.P." , which delivers a very special view on what Drum'n'Bass-related music might sound like. Although the musical base is clearly Drum'n'Bass or - as I'd rather name it DarkJungle - the tracks are more dense and way more extreme than any of these days productions and come up with a very experimental and sometimes jazzy feel, despite we're not talking Jazz as organic, live music here but more as an attitude of free spirit and improvisation. Someone should recommend this to ppl invlvd in the french Free Tekno- /Tekbreak-scene and this will get more attention than it might get in Germany.

Scab - Where The Freaks Are At E.P. [Modern Arts / Cargo]

A piece of solid Rock-music is Scab's new four tracker "Where The Freaks Are At E.P.", including two songs taken off their recent album "Our Time" plus two pieces of older material taken off their 2006 debut "The Difference Between Us". Avoiding troubled waters four guys spice up their good ol' Rock with a few Punk'ish - no, they're not going extreme! - influences and according to thier tour dates in Switzerland, Austria, Germany and even Australia they seem to hit some nerve these days with this. Positive moshpit music that is quite energetic and approaches a broader audience including some radio airplay for sure.

Sascha Müller - 3 [Super 6 Records 32.5]

Cat.No. 32.5 - wtf ? - of Super 6 Records is Sascha Müller's new three tracker simply entitled "3" which kinda focuses on classic House music stylewise. Located somewhere between the musical realms of pumping Strictly Rhythm or Nervous Records and Matthew Herbert's excursions in House this one might suit well into any real connaisseurs DJ-set although this style is rarely played out in todays clubs for what reason ever. But anyway, this is classy and defines what House music has always been about.

Sascha Müller - 5 min. Acid Warning [Säurebad Records 008]

Quite a weird one is cat.no. 008 of Säurebad Records, Sascha Müller's "5 min. Acid Warning" part one to five. Nothing more to be found here than five raw and uncut, ever modulating, pulsating and bleeping 303-lines - no beats, basslines or other dancefloor working structures. Still, those lines are hypnotizing enough to satisfy any Acid purist around but will probably not approach any other audience outside of closed Acid circles. If you're up for a proper mindfuck, check this one out.

U still love the Acid? Then it's about time to check out cat.No. 032 of Super 6 Records, which is "The Throwback Tactic" straight out of the studio of J Garrett. Expect tweaking, twisting 303-lines everywhere and in any form: on top of banging Techno or classic Elektro beats, minimalistic or slightly psychedelic as well as inna Emmanuel Top'esque, quite AcidTrance-flavored way that'll put you in a Trance for sure while you're mind drifts away into endless realms when you're located on the dancefloor. Defo recommended to all true Acid headz out there and about to be filed as future classic soon.

Alex Fadeyev a.k.a. G-Fox comes up with a new release via Super 6 Goodies these days. Running under the name of "Theme From Forestline" this track is a straightforward piece of banging Trance with a good, quite uplifting attitude - solid club stuff with an epic breakdown that works a raving crowd well, especially when played out in early morning sets. A good one for all those out there who still love classic Trance sounds.
