J.Garrett - Polite Society EP [Super 6 Records 055.5]

Another fresh one on Super 6 Records is J.Garett's "Polite Society EP", serving the title track in four versions and obviously following the paths of DubTechno in its original form, a field that has seen a massive comeback lately but also has been watered-down by many average releases. But this piece goes far beyond that as the so-called "Version 1" is top notch quality in DubTechno whilst "Version 2" speeds up dubby flavors and combines them with uptempo, 'troity tension, distorted crash percussions and some Acid. Remixes are served by Nang - dubby as well - and Sascha Müller who provides a dark, haunting re-lick that still refers to its original vibe but as well aims to dancefloors of purist Techno clubs like Berghain or Ostgut. Recommended.

Binaural Beats Project - 0SB-pk [Super 6 Records 055]

Binaural Beats Project are about to release their five track single "0SB-pk" via Super 6 Records, a piece that seems to be clearly influenced by the sound of PsyTrance, fusing that with small bits of Acid, experimentalism and - at least partly - a sense for reduction although none of these tracks can be described as stripped down to the bone. But still there's something irritating about all these: none of those tunes seems to go somewhere, end up in some kind of climax, work the floor crowd, calm down Ambient heads or do something at all. They just are and exist on their own in a musical universe related to what can be described as some kind of Intelligent Techno. Which is very puzzling.

Audiokonstrukte - City Echoes [Fürni Promo]

Another label to be launched by the Mille Plateaux-camp these days is Fürni, coming up with the slogan "Affordable Sounds For Living" and meant to be their outlet for Electronica not that abstract and conceptual as their main imprint, more accessible and somehow easier to get along with. And so is their first full length album output: "City Echoes" by an artist named Audiokonstrukte which serves a collection of thirteen tracks to be filed in between Electronica, classical Ambient and some Downtempo-influences, well-crafted, partly dubby and well enjoyable but with a quite oldskool'ish attitude which will be appreciated by a crowd that once spent hours and afterhours watching the legendary "Space Night" recorded on videotape from german TV, calming down at ChillOut floors and enjoying the deep magic provided by DJ's such as Mixmaster Morris, also known under his production moniker The Irresistible Force. Yes, this album is for those who've been around for long now whilst the electronic music youth might miss out on this chill piece due to lack of personal experience as the scene has changed a lot throughout the past decade. But no matter what, it's a good one.

Chicken Accelerator [Astro Chicken 001 Promo]

A new label highly recommended to all lovers of Electro Cosmic, ItaloDisco and related genres is the Düsseldorf-based - sic! - imprint Astro Chicken which has just put its first released on the circuit - a four track E.P. pressed on yellow vinyl and limited to only 230 pieces worldwide. The music is served by Hyboid, Starlight Hammer Sounds, Telebot and Sternrekorder, all of them taking deep space trips into Cosmic realms and pleasing needs for epic synth melodies and other tripped out sounds but still knowing how to please the dancing crowd as well. Defo checkworthy, especially if you already know about labels like Dominance Electricity or Berlin-based Das Drehmoment. Plus: will be sought after soon.

Craig Vear - Summerhouses [Cluster Promo]

As announced on these pages before the Mille Plateaux camp have now launched their new sub/sister label Cluster for Drones, Ambient and Experimental / Deep Listening Electronic Music with the release of Craig Vear's album "Summerhouses", a six track piece of processed found sound - or field recordings if one likes to name it like that. And even processed might be the wrong term, although music software was included throughout the process of making this album, coze these studies can be described working sound through a kind of scanning electron microscope, focusing on very details and textures hidden to the human ear, stretching the original sound source to explore its secrets and, within doing this, seeing it losing its original context and unvealing beauty of its own - always calm but cold and sometimes alienating, not to be understood and still fascinating. A trip to an acoustic world that exists beyond most humans imagination.

Shaping Elements: Poker Flat Volume 8 [Poker Flat Recordings Promo]

Scheduled for september on Steve Bug's very own Poker Flat Recordings is their eighth retro-/futurespective label compilation, this time named "Shaping Elements" and coming up as 2xCD and double 12" edition. Talking the vinyl edition here which features six tracks produced exclusively for this double pack by the likes of D'julz, Jay Tripwire, Donnacho Costello and others, all providing quality dancefloor fodder and evolving the known and beloved trademark Poker Flat-sound which seems to move into a more dubby, late night direction - a sound that luckily has seen quite a renaissance throughout the last 12 months and seems to become even more popular now. Only Patrick Chardronnet and Benny Rodrigues come up with tracks more prime time-flavored and ecstatic, providing music for the masses that's not necessarily mainstream but pumping quality TechHouse for pleased ravers. Check out.

Subbass: Dubstep Made In Germany [Subbass 001]

Dubstep has been allover the place for years now and although it is still recognized as a mainly UK-based phenomenon by many a lively scene has evolved in many other countries, bringing up loads of unknown or rarely recognized producers who are ready to step up and provide their specific vision of Dubstep and related bass-fired genres. These days the makers of the german website dub-step.de have decided to put Germany on the map, starting their new Subbass-label with a free CD compilation released under the creative commons licence and representing at least seventeen of Germany's upcoming producers, trying to give an overview of what is happening here. Those, including the likes of Bassrael, Dr Kaya, Genetik Krew and many others, serve a full spectrum view on different Dubstep-flavors from wobbly bangers to more introvert pieces and other variations. Defo a checkworthy one and a good idea at all to promote the latest bass induced hype.

Samuel L Session - Blue Ripple EP [Detelefunk 015 Promo]

Soon to come on Detroit Grand Pubahs' very own Detelefunk-imprint is Samuel L Session's "Blue Ripple EP", featuring three tracks of quality Club Techno well to be loved by all those who miss the sound of true Techno these days. Especially the title track serves a thrilling build-up ending up in a massive climax that is about to drive punters mad, but the B-side tracks "Odyssey" and "Staccaton" do also work well on the dancefloor causing massive body movements and mental ecstasy if played out at the right time. If you like Techno you should buy this.

Leaving Meaniebar

Just a short announcement that baze.djunkiii's monthly "Nacht Aus Beton"-shows will not be taking place at Hamburg Meaniebar no more from october 2010 onwards. Although I really loved to play there I don't feel at home in that place any more after they totally restyled the interior which now looks quite dull and sterile, well commercial and like a "bar that wants to be a micro club". Plus: the sound preconditons changed for bad as well so it's time for me to leave and look for another location to continue the "Nacht Aus Beton"-series.

Sascha Müller - Krankenhaus (Red) [SM Traxxx 001]

A new label and once again it's Sascha Müller who's responsible for their first release. The two tracks "Krankenhaus (Red) 1" and "Krankenhaus (Red) 2" are about to please all those who're loving their mid-tempo Acid right. Whilst the first tune relies on a reduced, classic, quite Chicago-flavored style, the second one is more glitzy, hi-hat focussed, representing a very futuristic variation of Acid that clearly knows about Detroit and the sci-fi Techno served by artists like Ken Ishii in their early days.

Markus Hideo Rise - Cube EP [Super 6 Records 054.5]

One for all the ravers out there is Marcus Hideo Rise's "Cube EP" put out on Super 6 Records as their cat.no. 054.5. Containing five tracks of thrilling Techno with a ravey, acidic and slightly psychedelic twist this one will be loved by many which have been around in the mid-90s when sounds like these where hammered in the darkest hours of many raves all over the world. I do like.

Marie Fisker - Ghosts Of Love [Maryvine Records]

Marie Fisker is a danish phenomenon still. But she's ready to take the world and now her 2009-released debut album is available on the german market via Cargo Records. Born 1976, she set up her own studio in 2000 in the center of Kopenhagen and started working on songs not tracks ever since which can be described as intimate but intense, silky studies on Pop music with a partly desert feel and clear influences from Shoegaze and the so-called Singer/Songwriter scene and driven by at least more than a bit of melancholia that seems to be typical for many artists grown up north. Not interested yet? Maybe the fact that Marie Fisker has been invlvd in loads other projects and is known to many as the voice behind Trentemøller's single "Sycamore Feeling", the first outtake of his recent - and best - album "Into The Great Wide Yonder" will raise yr attention. "Ghosts Of Love" deserves it.

Kabutogani - Bektop [Mille Plateaux]

Another one recently released via the Mille Plateaux-camp is Kabutogani's album "Bektop", a twelve track exploration of a genre that is mainly shaped via the label itself and named as Clicks'n'Cuts, an ultra dry amalgamation of highly digital bleeps, extremely sharp highs and growling bass tones - the soundtrack of the fully computerized age or, if one wants to exaggerate, Hard Drive Phonk. Albeit those tracks are not necessarily dancefloor fitting at least there's more than a few on this album that have a kind of phonky feel and a certain groove making yr feet tap while listening and knowing that the artists name means horseshoe crab in japanese one can even imagine those little animals buzzing around like data bits in a worldwide computer network. A specialists release for sure which is to be recognized only by die-hard lovers of the Clicks'n'Cuts genre and related, more academic electronic music put on the circuit by labels like Raster Noton, but this album is hopefully more than a hint that there's still progress in this musical field that seemed to be gone and nearly forgotten for quite a while.

Ametsub - The Nothings Of The North [Mille Plateaux]

If you like you're Electronica abstract, them beats slow and tricky, are a fan of acts like Autechre, Boards of Canada, Anne Westphalen or Funkstörung, not afraid of some subliminal Downtempo-influences and still remember that long gone Heimelektro Ulm Tonquellen-imprint you're recommended to check out Ametsub's recent album "The Nothings Of The North" released via Mille Plateaux. Fourteen tracks of electronic melancholia are to be found here, originally put on the circuit as twelve track album by the japanese label Progressive Form in 2009 and now available worldwide with two additional mixes of "Repeatedly". Looking out of my window into the grey, rainy and way too autumnal - it's august 9th - skies I clearly feel that this album is the right one when one is in need for some calm, embracing digital warmth.

Words On: New Horizon

First of all I gotta big up Lübeck's Outrider Crew for setting up last nites show - great fun indeed. With Strandsalon they picked a super nice beach club location in their hometown Lübeck which is near to perfect for a fest starting open air in the afternoon and being proceeded at night indoor for reasons of avoiding noise pollution and disturbing neighbours. Although we - which means myself, baze.djunkiii, and my beloved girlfriend which joined me on that short trip - arrived a bit late for my afternoon set scheduled at 5 P.M. I managed to play a nice selection of (Neo)Disco / Disco Edits and related stuff to a small crowd hanging out including some families and their kids even which really enjoyed playing in the small pool set up quite next to the DJ booth. More people arrived later and after the sun had gone down the booth was transferred to a kind of gazebo with a real dancefloor that was well crowded soon while the members of the Outrider Crew played out their Drum'n'Bass-sets. Especially Smecker stood out as her selection was quite leftfield and featured various DarkJungle- and experimental Drum'n'Bass-tunes plus - surprise - Jens K.'s remix of Mr. Oizo's "Flat Beat" that was released on my own Intrauterin Recordings imprint some years ago. Seeing ppl partying on a Drum'n'Bass vibe I was a bit skeptical if my choice to hammer a selection of NuSkoolBreaks and some UK Hardcore would work out right, but after opening my set with the Cut'n'Run bootleg of La Roux's "In For The Kill" everything turned out as planned and the crowd started brocking out even harder, well appreciating every new tune, loads of Bootlegs and stuff I'm sure they hadn't ever heard before. Some of them even weren't sure what kind of music they were dancing to. Defo an ultra nice one and I'm sure I played more than the 60 minutes that were scheduled for my set although the timetable was quite tight. Another suprise - I met my old mate Krähe that night which I hadn't seen since 1995 or 1996 and was quite astounded that he's still alive and doing right. How'd they say in "1984"? Double plus good.

Clicks And Cuts Five: Paradigm Shift [Mille Plateaux]

As announced on these pages before, Mille Plateaux is back on track and have relaunched their groundbreaking "Clicks And Cuts"-series which once set standards and coined a whole new genre definition with it's title. Good move and even a better one to choose "Paradigm Shift" as subtitle for their newest issue as there has been a recognizable shift in focus indeed. Instead of serving a compilation of academic glitches and conceptual compositions done by all those artists that have been invlvd in earlier issues the Mille Plateaux-staff decided to bring up a lot of new names like Ametsub, Kabutogani, Gultskra & Artikler, Iodsb and others that haven't been that exposed to the lovers of more experimental electronic music yet and allow them to explore a wider field of styles. Clicks, cut and glitches are to be found here alongside some Ambient / Deep Listening Music, more abstract pieces and classic Electronica - a well interesting mixture that makes this one one of the most important compilation pieces in 2010. Recommended.

01. Act Like You Understand [Handicap Records 001 Promo]
See review for details...

02. Lunatik Sound System - The Heavy Minded Orchestra [Something Vinyl Series 013]
Deep Listening Music, Dark Ambient, Drones, written and produced by Stephan Laubner which is also - and better - known to many under his STL-moniker. To be found on a limited to 500 pieces double album which is one of the best releases pressed on vinyl I've seen in this genre for ages.

03. Deformer - Diabolical E.P. [Mindtrick Records 666 / Redrum Recordz 038]
Three tracks of bass heavy DarkJungle and Industrial-flavored Dubstep plus additional remixes by Bong-Ra - sic! -, Atif & EnK and 6Blocc. Great, quite dark artwork and red vinyl pressing.

04. Ira Atari & Rampue - Just F**in Dance It [Audiolith Promo]
See review for details...

05. STL - Travelling Dubs And Echoes E.P. [Echochord 045]
DubTechno for those who know. Two tracks for the advanced dancefloor plus one Ambient-flavored piece.

06. Loop Hotel - Room 201 / Room 202 [Loop Hotel 002 Promo]
See review for details...

07. House Of Trax Vol. 5 [Trax Records / Rush Hour]
The next great piece in this repress series. Two mixes of Gwendolyn's "Come To Me" plus the full vocal version of "Fantasy" by Z-Factor feat. Jessie Saunders do witness the musical magic of the ProtoHouse-era. Anthemic.

08. Gilles Peterson presents Remixed [Brownswood Recordings 052]
Three pieces of Cuban music remixed by Michael Cleis, T. Skinner and the almighty Seiji. Whilst the first mentioned do transfer the Cuban vibes into a deep, House-flavored context it's Seiji who goes even further and serves a floor burning piece of BrokenHouse / Phusion with thrilling beats and some dark'ish bass workout. Massive.

09. Shake Shakir - At The Bonnie Brook [Astrolab Recordings 011]
Mr. Anthony Shake Shakir provides what he does best - banging, uptempo House music with a slightly abstract twist. Three different remixes are provided alongside the original track.

10. 3 Titans - College / The Life Of A Scholar [Daptone Records]
Jorden Plaines, Kahlil Jackson and Dallas Ifill, three very young fellas rapping about their everyday life and educational career on top of ultra dope, early 90s-style HipHop beats. Perfect party music and well impressing regarding their age.
