Sascha Müller vs. Nightnoise - North-West Alliance Vol. 03 [Super Six Records 030]

One of the rarest Techno records released these days is cat.no. 030 of Super Six Records, released in a limited edition of only 37 handcut pieces worldwide as triangle-shaped seethrough lathe cut 8". Despite the sound of lathe cuts is different to vinyl both tracks - "Silent Groove (Sascha Müller Acid Mix)" and "Another Way" by Nightnoise - deliver proper floor fodder: first mentioned track brings back the uptempo madness and dancefloor ecstasy of underground Acid / Techno raves with thrilling 303-lines and hard, driving beats whilst the flipside deals with a slower, more tribalistic side of Techno which will be loved by those appreciating labels like Monoid or producers like Oliver Ho. Some spooky samples are to be found here too for a bit of sepcial spicy flava. Look out for before its too little late.

Bad Matter & Scary – Demon Masters / Mark Tailor - White Ass [Pressure Chamber 003]

After its kinda weak cat.no. 002 german Drum’n’Bass-imprint Pressure Chamber strikes back with its third release and does way better with this one. Bad Matter & Scary serve their usual Drum’n’Snare- / Slaughter’n’Bass-thingy but pick up enough dark vocal samples and athmospheres here to create something thrilling plus their beat trickery is working the dancefloor massive right which means – actually there is a proper groove to all those chopped up drums which isn’t the case with most of the genres releases these days which are full-on moshpit. Well done. Mark Tailor’s „White Ass“ is more a deep, but still heavy stepper that might be referred to as serious follow-up to DJ Ron’s legendary „Industrial Dubwise E.P.“ flavourwise but with a contemporary touch and due to this will be supported by all those DJs that experienced the heyday of Drum’n’Bass-music. Check.

Techno.

Ryo Murakami - Down The Sky [Poker Flat Recordings 095 Promo]

Japanese new breed talent Ryo Murakami comes up with his "Down The Sky E.P." as cat.no. 095 of Poker Flat Recordings these days and is about to work floors right with this one. A1 sees the title track reworked by Poker Flat's Greek-based in-house producer Argy, which delivers a pumping, techy tune with ecstatic snarerolls and primetime feel while the original version is stripped down but still on a quite positive and uplifting tip featuring cool lead synths plus some funny, weirdly processed vocal snippets that make punters smile when they're flickering through. "Coke" is featured on the flipside and while it remains open if he's talking CocaCola or cocaine here the tune drives floors mad with its modulated high tone lead sounds and dark echoic, sci-fi stabs accidentally dropping on top of a cool groove that is to be named no less than purest Minimal Funk. Top tune and the best one on this 12".

Rene Breitbarth - Le Rythme Korg E.P. [Dessous Recordings 079 Promo]

Fresh Dessous Recordings is their cat.no. 079, which is Rene Breitbarth's "Le Rythme Korg E.P.". This one is a bit of a surprise as it - in it's original version - attempts to fuse deep vibes with oldschool'ish, uplifting synth chords we all loved back in the '93 to '95 days. This sounds nice for like a minute or two but on top of slightly nervous beats it seems as if the whole thing is running and running for ages but in the end of the day leads to nothing - no climax, no progression, so what's the point here? Westpark Unit's remix featured on A2 does better here, adding a pumping bassline and sharp, forward moving hihats and sweet piano improvisations for a jazzy touch. On the flip there's "Le Groove Rhodes" to be found which sticks with an analogue oldskool vibes as well and works best in small, red-walled underground venues. All in all this one will find some fans for sure but for sure is one of the weaker Dessous Recordings releases.

E.stonji – Particles E.P. [Phantomnoise Records 013 Testpress]

Lined for release on march 27th is E.stonji’s „Particles E.P.“ on Phantomnoise Records, actually the 13th release in the labels’ ten years of existence and somwhat the first official re-issue of formerly released tracks as all tracks featured here have been available digitally via Kitty Yo Digital since 2007. But as vinyl is still the first medium of choice, this one perfectly makes sense and it’s the A1 featured tune „Protn“ alone that makes the whole thing worth its price. Bringing the house down with an excellent mixture of Rave-attitude and Funkstörung’esque Electronica / IDM this one is what you call a primetime smasher, at least if a DJ has balls enough to play that out. Killer. All other tracks plus locked grooves well fit into that style too and are about to add some extra knots and twists to dancers legs as they’re packed with carefully spliced and atomized beat structures that’ll stimulate body and mind the same. Who again invented the term Braindance for this kind of music ???

Audiolith Release News

Hamburg-based Audiolith Records is not only everyones favorite imprint when it comes to ElectroPunkRaveWhatever but comes up with two new releases these days.

Cat.No. 037 is The Dance Inc.'s "Matador" which is one of the biggest SynthPop-anthem written ever within the last 15 years. Anthemic but still a bit of melancholia involved and working dancefloors well. Back in the 80's this one would have easily climbed into top20 positions. Remixed by Bob Humid and totally re-edited into a German vs. English Lyrics NewRave excess by Frittenbude all those longing for alternative versions will find their favorite, too. Another live recorded version taken from a gig in Vienna in 2007 that easily proves their live quality is featured as well, so this one is a must.

Plemo vs. Rampue feat. Jessica Drosten are responsible for Audiolith 038, which is their track "Excess Express". Working on a different level this one sticks in yr ears due to its slightly trashy, bleepy attitude and loads of micromusic-related noises. Guess this is about to set NeuRave- and Indie-kids on fire the same at peaktime occasions, no matter if one plays out the Original Versions or reworks featured by Rampue and Bastian Heerhorst.

Carl Craig - Sessions [!K7 Records]

Berlin-based !K7 Records earned many praises in the past and present, not only for their carefully picked catalogue of single and album releases but even more for their endless string of high quality compilations including the infamous "DJ-Kicks"-series that introduced electronic dance music to oh so many that haven't been touched by the fascination of DJ music until they first heard one.
Nowadays the label comes up with a new strike in this field, the release of Carl Craig's double mix CD "Sessions", twelve years after the Detroit Techno pioneer's contribution to their "DJ Kicks"-series. Both sessions / mixes focus on Mr. Craig's work as producer and remixer under his own name as well as using different monikers as Paperclip People - watch out for the excellent track "Oscillator" featured here which originally was released on Carl Craig's very own Retroactive imprint in 1991 and still is one of his most thrilling works ever -, 69, Innerzone Orchestra and others so this release can be understood as DJ showcase or artist retrospective at the same time. This "best of..." is a clear statement to all those who discovered Carl Craig only recently due to his "Falling Up" rework that has been caned by nearly everyone playing 4/4 music out in the clubs, a manifesto of influential, groundbreaking and pioneering work that lasts over a timespan of two decades now plus - for all those being around from day one - a great collection of CC's tunes that includes some unreleased stuff alongside well apreciated and sought after tracks as well as some special reworks crafted exclusively for this release. Due to all that "Carl Craig - Sessions" on !K7 can be rated one of the essential compilations for all newbies and old timers in electronic dance music the same, a lesson that tells the story of true Techno spirit from the very beginnings to this date, brought to all of you by one of its originators. Buy.

Cascada – What Do You Want From Me? [Zeitgeist]

New on Zeitgeist is Cascada’s „What Do You Want From Me?“ – once again a very commercial EuroDance production that comes in three different version here, including a remix provided by DJ Gollum who surprisingly does best here. Without a doubt this one is about to work floors right in big room discotheques due to all the ingredients that have been working well for ages – a catchy hook, anthemic female vox and stomping, uptempo 4-2-the-floor beats. This for sure is music for the masses, but – no matter if one is up for that bit of cheese or not – functional as fuck and guarantees some happy faces when punters jump around.

Zascha Moktan – Like U Do [Universal]

Fresh on Universal as well is Zascha Moktan’s new single „Like U Do“, a nice piece of swinging, summer-flavored Pop music that brings loads of positive vibes in its Original Single Edit as well in its various remixes provided by the likes of Teddy-O, Beathoaven, DJ Farhot and others. Could achieve some mainstream radio rotation but unfortunately the 12“ sent out as promo sounds over compressed and heavily distorted for some reason unknown. Seems something went wrong here in the final step of vinyl mastering or cutting so it’s really hard listening to the whole 12“ to come to a conclusion.

Sugababes – Denial [Universal]

On the promo circuit since last week is „Denial“ by the Sugababes, a quite cheesy, partly drama’esque piece of mainstream radio Pop that’ll be loved by underage consumers and left alone by all others for sure. So forget both radio mixes featured on this 12“ and check out the so-called Ballistic Bass Mix, which is House-flavored and might work with some commercial jocks relying on full on vocal tunes. Not my cup of tea.

Trust In Music

Here’s a lil’ focus on the Berlin-based Drum’n’bass-imprint Trust In Music that has been providing a series of releases since 2006 – those not only holding quality music but a very unique and CI artwork by Matthias Schurkus as well that could easily stand the test of time within an art related context - and is coming up with two new 12“es for early 2008 these days.

Cat.no. 006 is Rregular & Dementia’s double A-side „Sludge Tunnel / Overcast“ – first mentioned a prime time tool for all followers of so-called NeuroFunk that comes with a gnarling bassline, slightly nervous drums and various flickering synthstabs that are responsible for a ravey attitude that’ll surely work on the worlds dancefloors when a hype crowd is around. „Overcast“ on the flip will be regarded as sure shot for late night sets as it provides a deep dreamy athmosphere alongside stripped down but still driving beats, techy midrange stabs, uplifting subs plus slightly balearic guitar samples and filtered vocals. This description might sound cheesy to some but for sure it ain’t and is about to raise some hands in the air instead due to its anthemic feel that also people not involved into Drum’n’Bass can relate to. Defo a nice one.

Proktah’s „Disruptor“ on cat.no. 005 starts out as athmospheric, epic tune and even features some guitar-sounds that set expectations high to develop into an high voltage rave massacre but flips into a heavy, tool’ish NeuroFunk-track after the first breakdown that relies on a few modulated synth-lines flickering through from time to time, those paying respect to early electronic pioneers as Vangelis or Jean Michel Jarre without being cheesy at all. On the flip we see a N.phect relick of Proktah’s „Apprentice“ which is as functional and well-crafted as we all know and like his solo-tunes on other labels.

A different piece of cake is the 2007 released Trust In Music 004, that holds Martsman’s „Kontamin“ on the A-side which is kind of a stepper but not as complex as the releases he is so well appreciated for. The warped, bleepy bassline on top of monotonously looped beats is the main dancefloor factor here while a abstract melody provides a `troity feel – not an easy one for sure and hard to play out in yr everyday rave. Some of a similar kind is his remix provided for Hamburg-based producers Deo & Matik on the flip. Their tune „Boulder“ is rearranged here with a sense of abstraction that easily leaves 4 or 8-step patterns behind and thinks things in a way beyond what is expected from a tune these days.

Regime’s double A-side „Physical World / Salvation“, also released in 2007, is on a more trancey, melodic tip though and combines this with the sound of technoid Drum’n’Bass. Whilst „Physical World“ is remixed by Adam Form here and e.g. well fits to Qbit’s pieces on Drop On Request 003 and the likes of to give an idea of what’s dealt with soundwise, „Salvation“ on the flip provides a nice piece of deep, athmospheric NeuroFunk-flavored music that surely works out well on dancefloors when they’re not full on hyper but shortly before that. A track that let’s punters breathe a bit before they’re hit with the next massive smash.

Cat.no. 002 seems to be gone so there’s no reflection on that at this time but with their very first release of 2006 the Trust In Music crew well proved that they exactly knew what they’re up for. On the A-side we see Nursa feat. Ignite’s „Smashed Mirror“ which is a thrilling, ravey piece of Drum’n’Bass fusing straightforward beats with a kinda clowney bassline and a few scratches, vox samples plus short, tricky breakdowns that push the whole thing even more – seems like there some HipHop-influences involved here which is fine. This one might still work floors of day as well does Nursa’s relick of Cymon’s „Cribbs“ on the flipside, which unveals the producers’ JumpUp-influences and even features some horn signals firing up the rave posse.

Back In Da Day E.P. [Beyond Da Booth 001]

Lewi White and Smasher recently teamed up for their excelleent "Back In Da Day E.P." which has been put out lately as cat.no. 001 of the brand new Beyond Da Booth-imprint and has to be announced as the hottest Grime-release that hit the stores this week. Part I featured on the A-side comes up with the dark, heavy & minimal beats that'll also touch the hearts of the Dubstep-posse, especially as instrumental, whilst the lyrics deal with history and tell a story to all those too young to know times when TDK's were standard. On the flip the lyrical deal is quite the same topicwise but uses all sorts of UK Garage-snippets, samples and vocals cutting into the dark beats to complete the whole story. Proper idea and one to hype up dancefloor craze going on. Will be loved by all those who've been around when UKG blew up and followed that with heart & soul. Paying respect is what this one does and it's done nicely.

Ich + Ich - So Soll Es Bleiben [Universal Music]

Yes, Ich + Ich - the project of Annette and Adel Tawil - is successful. Over 400k sold copies of their recent album "Vom Selben Stern" prove that and are a undenieable fact, especially in these days of decreasing record sales, and their new single "So Soll Es Bleiben" is the best thing they've put out until today, remixwise. Although their use of german vocals is a matter of personal taste and not my cup of tea Tom Novy's so-called Dub Remix builds a nice bridge between anthemic, commercial flavored ElectroHouse and some minimalistic influences whilst Dessous Recordings' long time recording artist Vincenzo Ragone provides a full vocal plus instrumental version for all the DeepHouse-posse out there. His "Satinsoul Instrumental Remix" clearly wins.

Sileni – Black Rocket / Hi-Lar – Back On Trip *LXC RMX [Offshore 020 Promo]

Offshore Recordings is back on track with a great piece of non-standard Drum’n’Bass that is about to set advanced floors on fire immediately. Sileni’s „Black Rocket“ comes with a twisted, late 90’s feel including warped basslines and all that stuff we well loved back in the days. Beats are trickier though and a lot of strange, fuzzy sounds are about to puzzle yr worn out braincells here – so don’t expect that this one is copycatting the old skool. Delivering a reminiscence to what once has been inna 2008 way is the tracks mission and it’s completed flawless. LXC’s turn on Hi-Lar’s „Back On Trip“ is a quite funky affair with a bit of stop-motion attitude, adding a few knots to the dancers legs for sure. Known for being a lover of beat science his funk moves back and forth, introducing some formerly unknown moves to dancefloor enthusiasts and homelisteners the same. Once again a sureshot and recommended to all those bored of everyday’s Clown-/Nokiastep and Neuro-whatever.

Trentemoller – Miss You [Audiomatique 028 Promo]

Fresh on Audiomatique Recordings is their cat.no. 028, shooting-star Trentemoller’s new 12“ “Miss You“. Remixed by himself on A1 the track, taken off his ultra successful album „The Last Resort“, fuses deep hypnotic piano modulations and MinimalTechno structures, whilst Pole comes up with a mixture of nervous, echoic, Dubstep-influenced beats but leaves out typical cliche basslines here and focuses on weird, processed sounds instead that will be loved by the Indietronics-massive. Pascal F.E.O.S.’ rework on B1 relies on calm, kinda rolling, minimalistic beats underneath the piano and due to this is about to work well with all lovers of balearic sounds and the final remix featured here by Lulu Rogers feat. Asger Baden is one for all the Ambient-headz out there,

Gonzales – Working Together / Theme From In-Between [Mercury Records]

OK folks. Gonzales is back with a new 7“ and the title track seems like from back in the 60s or whatever. Maybe there’s some retro-thingy going on that we didn’t catch up with but honestly we don’t care and just can’t stand that kind of cheesyness. But „Theme From In-Between“ on the flip is quite a nice, piano-flavored Downtempo-/ Headz-tune that well fits in on various occasions so this tune alone makes the records check-worthy. Ask yr dealer.
