Shackleton - Remixes [Scape 055]

It's not the easiest job to deliver a remix for an artist like Shackleton, which managed not only to carve out a niche of his own in the wide field of electronic music but literally crafted a whole new (sub)genre - named MythStep - with his occasional releases. But the likes of Scaped Music were about to give that a try and now we see Pole's hands on "Shortwave", which is turned into one of his typical quirky Electronica vs. Dubstep-pieces based on a MythStep-feel, while Peverelist comes up with a rework of "You Bring Me Down" that is to be filed under the flag of Experimental Techno and defo working well on advanced dancefloors although the bassdrums sound a bit hollow and the musical structures differ from your usual Techno tune. But ain't this why it's called experimental?

The Poker Flat Tournament presents Raudive vs. Costello [Poker Flat Recordings 098 Promo]

Poker Flat's re-formed and re-established Tournament series continues with another competitive 12" release these days. In one corner we've got Oliver Ho's Raudive moniker going deep with a mixture of hypnotic minimalism and some spacy, quite oriental flavored vocals that add a space, desert-like feel to the track, whilst his combatant Donnacha Costello of Minimise-fame serves a crystal clear, partly metallic sounding piece for peak time heights that causes dancefloor trouble due to its massive, minor chord leitmotif bassline that - once heard - never leaves your eardrums alone again. Defo the better track hear, not only due to its surprising end part that might puzzle some unexperienced jocks as well.

Sonnenbrandt - Gestern [Anna Logue Records / Kernkrach / NLW]

Whoever talks of the Hamburg-based project Sonnenbrandt and their recently released album "Gestern" can't do this without mentioning SynthWave and NDW (short for: Neue Deutsche Welle) as obvious influences - the last mentioned a german Pop phenomenon that lasted from around 1976 up to the mid-80s focusing on the use of raw, part time abstract German lyrics accompanied by mainly cold synthetic rhythms and sounds. The artists of these times were partly reffering to the UK-based (New) Wave but developed a style of their own which remained underground for a while and, as soon it was discovered by major record companies, died in the mid 80's of a burn out after a few years of commercial uber-hype. Whatever happened back then, Sonnenbrandt are happening now and they're bringing back these days again, with a tongue in cheek and a twinkling eye, satisfying those looking for fun and happyness the same as more nerdy, intellectual types as some of their lyrics are, if read correctly, going deeper than one might think at the first glimpse. Defo one to check out and as we talk checking here - check out their myspace as well...

Echo Echo - The Vampire Empire E.P. [Echo Echo 003]

U know these days when one stumbles upon a small label one has never heard of before, checking out their latest release and it turns out to be great. This is exactly what actually happened when I received cat.no. 003 of Echo Echo from the artist going by the same name not that long ago. Three tracks plus an additional Datassette remix of "Vampire Empire" are featured on this limited to 333 copies worldwide 12" with handprinted nightglow - yes, this is for the nerd kru out there - cover artwork, which are thrilling for advanced dancefloors as they manage to keep the balance right between their Wave-influences, detroit'ish Techno and, most important, high quality Electronica that labels like Warp or Planet µ would've loved a while ago. Name the likes of The Black Dog as reference level but actually these tunes are not too far from that and about to stand the test of time easily. As I presume this one is going to fly off the shelves keep yr eyes open and grab a copy or two quickly as these might be regarded collectors items soon.

Nelly - Body On Me / Stepped On My J's [Universal]

Fresh on the promo circuit via Universal is Nelly's newest double-A-side "Body On Me / Stepped On My J's". Whilst Akon & Ashanti suppport Nelly on "Body On Me", providing a sweet little hit breaking all wee girls hearts with its kinda cheesy lyrics and summerly feel, we've got Ciara & Jermaine Dupri on vocal duties on the flip. "Stepped On My J's" is the one who wins 'ere as the beats are heavy, vocals seductive and the instrumental version is about to set every advanced Urban dancefloor on fire soon. Nice.

LazioKasaa & Alec Cresp - Tricky Slaps [Super 6 Records 034]

LazioKasaa & Alec Cresp are coming up with another release these days - their "Tricky Slaps E.P." on Super 6 Records. Instead of exploring the realms of Ambient again as they did on their latest release on Chillzone Records which was reviewed on this page recently they provide all jocks with five tracks to be filed under the flag of Electro-/TechHouse that will be appreciated by all those digging the sounds of Moonbootica, Sebastian Legere and the likes of. Not that highly innovative or surprising but surely functional on the floor.

[Mono:Frame] - Pneumatik Bambie [Super 6 Records 34.5]

"Pneumatik Bambie" is the name of the newest album release on Super 6 Records which is produced by [Mono:Frame], another moniker introduced by the production team of Doc. AtmosfearCrush, Tomahawk and Machete. Under this new name they'll deal with the dark, psychedelic side of Techno & related, play around with acidic hypnotizm as well as with some weird beats that still fit within the 4/4 matrix but come up with grooves differing from what one gets from the usual Techno release these days. Due to this interesting and as well one to check if you dig the London way of defining AcidTechno as this might blow your head off when blasting through the rig of an AcidTechno sound system setting up an illegal warehouse rave somewhere in the centre of UK's capitol city.

Shackleton - El Din (Part One) / Mordant Music - Olde Wobbly [Mordant Music 024]

Mordant Music is back on track with another excellent 10". MythStep-ambassador Sam Shackleton explores the realms of ritual bass music with his "El Din (Part One)", a tune that seems to be deeper than anything else that left his - now Berlin-based - studio before. Still there's the tribal drums, still there is the mystical feel and massive amounts of bass we all loved in Shackleton's music, but things have changed as the music seems to be stripped down to less elements and the dancefloor is farther away than ever. It takes DJ's with guts to play this out to a bubbling crowd but if they'll get it they'll totally love it. On the flip there's Mordant Music bringing up "Olde Wobbly" which is not your usual Jump'n'Dubstep as one might expecty from the titles name but a fusion of Trance-induced Electronica, a bit of Ritual Industrial and Dubstep-influenced bassline abuse that well stands out from what you find on other discs these days. Recommended for being good.

Rex The Dog - I Can See You, Can You See Me? [Hundehaus 002]

Fresh on the strangely-named Hundehaus-ipmrint is Rex The Dog's new 12" "I Can See You, Can You See Me?" which transforms this hide and seek theme into a positive piece of Minimal Techno vs. NeoTrance that sees punters raise their hands up to the sky. Two mixes are available here - Rex The Dog's very own Club Mix is on a quite happy mooded tip and adds some Acid bits here and there that accompany the uplifting vocals whilst Oliver Huntemann's remix on the flip provides a darker, moodier vibe for all those tripping souls on the dancefloor.

Krak In Dub / Liquid Wicked - Dub War [Znoot Poch 07]

One for all (Neo)RaggaJungle- and Dubstep-Headz alike is cat.no. 007 of the french Znoot Poch-imprint, a sure shot to tear up any dancefloor. On the A-side we see Krak In Dub rollin' out his "Dub War RMX" that spreads good vibes in any proper Jungle / Drum'n'Bass rave, whilst Liquid Wicked's "Dub War Version" sets things straight in any Dubstep-dance with a heavy, high quality wobbling bassline, typical offbeat stabs and am incredibly dark breakdown about to kill all weak hearts inna di dance. Killer.

LazioKasaa & Alec Cresp - In Different Memories [Chillzone Records 005]

New on Chillzone Records is the labels cat.no. 005 which features two versions of "In Different Memories". While the "Cresp Eye Remix" is a deep, melodic piece of piano driven Electro Breakbeat perfect for Ibiza sunsets, "Sascha Müller Little Beatbox Mix" goes even deeper and delivers quality for all Ambient- / Electronica- / Deep Listening-lovers out there. A good one.

B-Tight / Tony D / Kitty Kat / Sido [Aggropromo.001]

Seems like that Berlin-based HipHop-imprint Aggro Berlin discovered the dancefloor magic of ElectroHouse-recently as their latest promo output contains - apart from the excellent Flash Gordon of Sido's "Halt Dein Maul" that was already put on the circuit as limited 7" before - ElectroHouse remixes the likes of Tony D, B-Tight and Kitty Kat that work both HipHop, NuRave and more commercial crowds alike. Peak time rotation only.

Homewreckers -American Ruhr [Unique Records 146]

Unique Records seem to explore the realms of DeepHouse and Detroit with their latest release which is Homewreckers feat. Kemo's "American Ruhr", to be found in its dark Downtempo'esque Original Version, as DeepHouse-flavored Rework plus Instrumental as well as remixed by the UR-associated Mark Flash and Bileebop here. First mentioned wins here with his classic Detroit Techno featuring oldskool'ish PianoStabs and typical strings introducing a perfect motor city feel to the audience whilst the latter focuses on the dark Downbeat vibe of the original and adds some heavyweight beats to it. Defo a good one.

Audiomatique 2.3 - The Remixes [Audiomatique 032 Promo]

Once again Audiomatique hits dancefloors worldwide with another quality release, featuring excellent remixes of tracks featured on "Audiomatique 2.1". Samuel L. Session reowrks Joel Mull's "Red Light Of Dawn" twice - his "The Melody Remix" focusing on the epic, more 'troity aspects of life while his "The Drums Remix" works the crowd with a deep, dark and rolling NYC-progressive flavored version for huge dancefloors, both perfectly matching with Ferrer & Sydenham's alltime classic "Timbuktu". On the flip we've Buzzin' Fly labelowner Ben Watts re-arranging The Viewer's "Streethorn" aiming to bring handclaps and film noir'esque strings back to all advanced dancefloors, delivering a decent but ever growing remix slowly building up and up and up, capturing dancers in a deep hypnosis before making way for the next tune to come after a clever but unexpected climax. One for the experienced jocks out there.

Isotop & Shots feat. The Phalanx - Assembler / Budoka - Ather [Tilt Recordings 009 Promo]

Yes, Mannheim's Tilt Recordings unleashed their release number 009 recently and once again they're consequently tearing up dancefloors with their very own and clearly focused vision of Drum'n'Bass or Techno Drum'n'Bass as they like to call it. Obviously Isotop & Shots feat. the Phalanx' "Assembler" featured on side A perfectly matches with their vision as it is - structurewise - more LoopTechno than Drum'n'Bass although the beat is still a broken one. The tracks tension results only out of the addition, subtraction and change of looped elements in a continuos mode and doesn't care about huge build ups or big breakdowns so much. This is a plain and simple DJ-tool and I presume that it's not too far away that Tilt Recordings are providing a set of 180 bpm-locked groove discs instead of tracks to the masses. Although check out "Assembler"'s athmospheric outro that makes clear that they've been thinking closely about what to do or not. Budoka's "Aether" on the flip once again showcases his ongoing development within the sub-genre of so-called NeuroFunk - this time starting things off on a deep tip and progressing into a clean and sparse piece of technoid breakbeat funk that learnt its lesson well from the blueprint album of this genre - we talkin' "Wormhole" 'ere - and delivering a proper 2008 update of its initial thought and structure. Well done.

Line 47 / Bop / Throttler / Mendelayev [Alphacut Records 008 Testpress]

Yes, Alphacut Records are back with their cat.no. 008 which has been released on september 1st and is hot still. Willing to rock the house there are four tracks by the likes of of Line 47, Bop, Throttler and Mendelayev covering a musical range from epic DarkJungle via more abstract beat wizzardry referring to the sparse minimalistic phunk of the likes of Photek or Source Direct in their early days to dark, threatening, bassline driven Drum'n'Bass rollers of the abstract kind so every DarkJungle / Experimental Drum'n'Bass-afficionado will at least find one track he or she loves. Quality again and all those who didn't know about Alphacut before are recommended to check out their back catalogue as well.

What's so funny about...

... Techno these days? Or maybe not these days but throughout the last years when somewhat like the "Neue Deutsche Witzigkeit" - roughly translated as: New German Funnyness - broke through and labels came up with shitty names like "Platzhirsch", "Kahlwild", "Ostwind", "Musik Gewinnt Freunde", "Freude Am Tanzen", producers chose names like "Die Rotbauchunken Vom Tegernsee", "Flora & Fauna" for their tunes and now we see the latest release from a label named "Hundehaus" coming up soon. Seriously - what's the point in naming a label "Dog House"? I remember that Techno in its early days stood up for a kind of anti-stardom, anti-establishment, futuristic thoughts and of course technological progression which somehow ended up in a competition for the newest, weirdest, harshest, most experimental and craziest sound or wildest idea - this is how genres like Gabber / Hardcore Techno were born as well as cheesy Dancefloor / EuroTechno came out of this competition, last mentioned often humourous in a cheap, crappy mass appealing way but still reflecting on what was happening on the scenes dancefloors or picking up, stealing ideas from the so-called underground and transforming them into something more commercial. Nowadays its the so-called underground releasing nothing but mostly stubborn, totally exchangeable Minimal Techno with a half life of two days only trying to raise attention by creating a funny name for what isn't worth to have a name anyway and all those wasted druggies on the dancefloor think the use of the "Neue Deutsche Witzigkeit" is the new cool. It ain't, 'coze Techno - used here as term for all kinds of electronic dance music - is or still should be about futurism and technological progression, maybe about some kind of escapism as for those who've been named as innovators, creators and godfathers of this movement, those still rooted in Detroit, Chicago and still - maybe not financially no more but for sure stuck in a world of prejudices and social instability - suffering from what this society has to offer for them this music is still about getting away from their pain and their daily sufferings. Not to forget the gay african, latino or hispanic people who found their freedom in Disco, HiNRG and early House in NYC - for them this music and the clubs which played this music meant freedom of expression, escape from oppression and at least sexual freedom. They're still fighting - worldwide. Those roots - although this aspect focuses on the afro american side of the Techno movement only - shall not be forgotten, neither be denied or made fun of by those who don't understand. Focusing on the european roots we've EBM, NuWave and Industrial - all of these styles weren't about fun at all but about anti-oppression, anti-capitalism and, if u want to name it like that, anti-music as groups like Throbbing Gristle worked on new musical (and cultural) aesthetics from scratch, Test Department worked shoulder to shoulder with the striking miners of South Wales in the mid-80's, Laibach evacuated journalists from the war zone of the former Yugoslavia and so forth. No matter what - todays Techno wouldn't be here if all this didn't happen, if those activists didn't put the power of the new music that was electronic music back then to the masses on the map. So where's the point in denying and disrespecting all this by trying to be funny?

10.09.2008 baze.djunkiii presents: Adventures In DeepHouse @ Byte.FM

DeepHouse - langsam, groovend, sexy. Menasse Workala - Play Me E.P. [Strøm Recordings 004 Promo]

Strøm Recordings are back on the circuit with their cat.no 004, this time straight out of the studio of Menasse Workala. Scheduled for september 15th this one is to be flying off the stores shelves quickly as there's nothing but high quality music to be found. "Play Me" provides a quite uplifting, slightly trancey vibe on top of a steadily pumping bassdrum that is about to enlighten all grim faces out on the dancefloor and somehow refers to the early days when Trance wasn't all about cheap appreggios, cheesy vocals and loads of drumrolls but about a deep hypnotic, ever floating feel that embraced everyone to make 'em feel fine and comfortable. On the flip there's "Far From Existence", a tune that is also on a deep but more ClubHouse influenced tip, coming up with a seductive groove, sweet melody plus hands in the air breakdown making everyone scream. Defo a nice one and one to stick in my box for a longer while.

J Courage feat. Shizzle - Too Deep [Trenchant 001]

All Grimeists out there are higly recommeded to check out this nice 12" on the US-based imprint Trenchant Recording that is setting standards high with its first ever release. Shizzle spits precisely as ever on top of ice cold, ultra-futuristic Grime beats straight out of the danger zone - representin' that crime and rudebwoy action is just round the corner and one is about to feel that. An excellent move is the use of pitched up female vocals as chorus, coze those are about to be remembered forever if only heard once. On the flip there's the "Too Deep" instrumental to be found plus another riddim going by the name of "Guardian" that hits the spot right with more dark futurism plus a deep bassline hook that is surely about to stand the test of time.

Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar *2008 Mixes [Grand Casino 010 Promo]

Can u think of only one other track except from "Cafe Del Mar" that has been around for more than 15 years now and still kicks every fucking punters ass on any dancefloor to be found on this planet? I can't and even if the Original Version by Kid Paul & Cosmic Baby still provides the highest pleasure the 2008 remixes are killing it, too. Michael Woods serves a full on Trance revival with his epic "Out Of Office Mix" that is made for the large room crowds, whilst Canadian new breed Deadmau5 relies on a plain and simple, quite athmospheric structure and a decent hook that fits in early morning festival sets as well as in a more minimalistic context. Finally we've Dave Robertson twisting and turning "Cafe Del Mar" up and down in a way that is about to please all lovers of today's ElectroHouse and related, the hip crowd sporting those huge sunglasses and Kopenhagen-based designers clothes...
