[Disko / Victim] – Digital Dreadnought [Super 6 Records 33.5]

The production team of Doc.AtmosfearCrush, Tomahawk and Machete joined forces again to form a new project named [Disko / Victim] which now presents its first longplayer „Digital Dreadnought“ on Super 6 Records. All tracks are to described as mixture of some MinimalTechno, TechHouse, a bit of Acid plus some Psychedelic-influences and obviously are, or at least seem to be, taken off some longer jam-like recording session as their approach is quite raw and freestyle’ish. This makes them a bit hard to catch on for unexperienced listeners but they might be inspiring for those who know how a free floating jam works.

Tim Fiedler – Es hat Ne Mütze Auf [Super 6 Records 033]

Fans of more uplifting, but still experimental and anti-groove’ish ElectroHouse might check out Tim Fiedler’s new release on Super 6 Records, released under the name of „Es Hat Ne Mütze Auf“. The Original Version is to be found here alongside two remixes by Bengala Boys and Sascha Müller – all three version do not really touch me for one reason or another, but no matter what they will do their duties if played out to a hyper audience.

Common ft. Pharell – Announcement [Geffen Records]

Commons new collaboration with Pharell has been on the promo circuit for a few days now under the name of „Announcement“ and has to be filed under not being that essential as his former 12“es but is a nice, laid back tune still that totally makes sense when one finds himself cabrio cruising on some beach boulevard, checking out chicks. On the flip there’s „UMC (Universal Mind Control)“ which is more uptempo, clubby and somewhat between Busta Rhymes’ „Don’t Touch Me“ and Missy’s more 808-breakdance-flavored tunes beatwise and might be suited in any proper oldskool Electro-set as well.

Rossi B & Luca – Enemy / DJ Wire - Drums [Heavy Artillery War Dubz 001]

Heavy Artillery introduces its new offshoot War Dubz with this one and it seems like things are going to be large. Rossi B & Luca’s „Enemy“ is a massive halftempo Dubstep anthem with Reggae-influenced vocals and a bleepish hookline that one hears once and forgets never ever after. Defo one for the lighter crew and beggin’ for reloads. On the flip there’s DJ Wire’s „Drums“ which is on the more apocalyptic side of what is named Dubstep, destroying dancefloors with dark athmospheres and – prove me wrong if I am on that – some Star Wars trumpet-stabs ripped off one of the early episodes. Huge.

Cyberchump - Our Wizards Of Earth [Internal Combustion]

Milwaukee's Cyberchump - consisting mainly of Mark G.E. and his compagnon Jim Skeel plus a bunch of guest musicians contributing parts to this album - are back with a new album due to be released on august 12th, which is quite different compared to their Ambient / Deep Listening-flavored "Sankhara" released in 2006. With "Our Wizards Of Earth" they explore a terrain to be described as more epic, more spaced out and for sure more organic than their last longplay work - although they tend to work more loop-orientated as they've come to a play, record, loop and re-play structure when they've been recording recently the whole album and its songs sound more like played in one go by a real band like all the great Kraut- and Psychedelic Rock outfits of the 70s did, first of all to mention Pink Floyd, but also the likes of Magma or Popul Vuh to name but a few whose fans might be touched by this one that refers to those times but still is not playing the copycattin' game here. But also fans of the so-called Cosmic movement are recommended to check out "Our Wizards Of Earth", which is not necessarily dancefloor focused but still contains some dance-compatible parts that mostly are connected to what often is wrongly named as World Music, a term usually used when there is some eastern or ethnic percussion like tabla involved and harmonies seem to refer to other notation systems than our common western. But don't get me wrong, this is no kitschy music for down-nested, more esoteric moms but an album for those who like a deeper listening experience than the usual that provides new aspects even to those who've been following Cyberchump for a while as it is their first longplayer to feature vocals in at least some of their new tracks although both of the main protagonists have used their voices in other bands than their own outfit.

I gotta admit...

... that I totally understimated Moby's "Run On" released via Mute Records in 1999 by the time I received that as upfront DJ promo back then. But skipping through a bunch of old records these days to prepare my box for a show made me think about this one again. Finally that turned out into giving this 12" a second chance and surpisingly the Extended Mix on B2 totally makes sense now, when played out in a more Freestyle-related context which I didn't do that much about nine or ten years ago. Still it's not Moby's best work but a useable tool to make people smile.

What A Night...

Last nights "In 2 Headz"-show at Hamburgs Meaniebar was quite a fun one, followed by a night out that caused a heavy hangover your favorite DJ is still suffering from although the time I'm writing this is wednesday 00:13 a.m. . The place was well crowded - no, that does not mean jam-packed but obviously no one expects that on a monday night - and punters obviously enjoyed my eclectic freestyle selection of Downtempo, Headz and mutant or leftfield HipHop spiced up with some oldskool'ish Reggae and Dub by the likes of The Icebreakers w/ The Diamonds or Jah Shaka. Felix Kubin was dropping by, too, which I hadn't seen in ages so I was glad to meet him again.

A group of young men hailing from Ingolstadt were the last ones at the bar as we closed around 02:30 a.m., asking about another place to go which is a question not easy to answer even in Hamburg which is the second biggest city in Germany. As they seemed to be nice and I had planned to go there anyway I offered them to roll with me to a place named Komet, one of my favorite bars in town and a place I more or less regularly hang out for more than a decade now, longer than I even live here, plus a place that one will defo not find as recommended place to be in any tourist guide - as long as you don't roll with locals you won't even see it. Drinks were downed and I changed choices from beer to gin tonic, time went by quickly and after Komet closed its doors a while we found ourselves at the counter of the Cobra Bar for more chat and drinks and as far as I remember I left that place heavily drunk around 06:15 a.m. , which isn't the best way to start a week - but a fun one anyway.

And talking long time no sees - Mark G.E. of Milwaukee's Cyberchump, another one I haven't met for about a year or more, stopped by at Otaku Records today to give me a copy of their newest release "Our Wizards Of Earth", so expect a review of that soon.

Plus - shouts to Stephen and Xania of Trike for this blog entry on their myspace.

Dexterity Of Dub [DI 002]

It seems to be ages ago since I came across the last high quality Dubstep-release as the last weeks or even months provided nothing but wobbling bassline boredom but this white label, containing tunes of Hindzy D, Andy Havok and DJ Tubby is all good again. Slow, deep and chilled half tempo beats and athmosphere meet nice, analog sounding basslines going so deep that they’re hard to experience via normal home stereo systems remind of early Scuba releases or even South3rn’s first output on Lo Dubs. Although one can’t make out who is responsible for which track due to the lack of information it’s clear that all contributing producers inhaled the main Dubstep vibe from day one and are way willing to stand firm when it comes to the movements roots on side A, while the flipside seems to be on a more techy, and Grime-influenced tip when it comes to sawtoothy basslines and trickier beat science. But no matter what, there ain’t no compromise in sight to provide dancefloor pleasure for all those bandwagon jumpers these days, this is stripped down to the bone Dubstep / Grime – from the hardcore underground for the hardcore underground.

Sido – Carmen Remix [Aggro Berlin]

More surprising news from Berlin’s Hardcore HipHop-camp Aggro Berlin, home of mask men Sido who comes up with a new single that’s more DigiSoul’ish Pop than HipHop and – as put on the promo circuit – remixed by Sirius Mo. Lyricwise he describes his unfulfilled love for a prostitute named – guess what – and somehow this has a bit of Falco’esque feel, although the Vienna accent is missing. Funny.

Caracho - In Hamburg Sagt Man Ja Ja [One Eyed Charlie]

Hamburg-based band / project Caracho mash up dancefloors with their debut E.P. "In Hamburg Sagt Man Ja Ja" these days, which has been finally released on the One Eyed Charlie-imprint after several successful live apperances in front of impressed crowds, straight flattened by Caracho's witty amalgamation of anarchic ElectroRock, some BigBeat / ChemicalBeat-influences rooted in band member Omo Bewarders history as part of the Fat Back Soundsystem and - sic! - lyrics sung / shouted in german language. Best and most energetic track on this is "Schwarze Katze *Feuer Remix" that regularly transfers audiences into moshpits. Check.

All forthcoming Elbwerk shows cancelled...

As the Elbwerk-crew still - after a few months of endless discussions - seems not able to provide neither a proper P.A. nor DJ monitors to enable their DJ's to deliver proper work, in their own location as well at their venue Hörsaal, which I was supposed to play yesterday but cancelled as the P.A. was heavily struggling with feedbacks, there will no more forthcoming baze.djunkiii appearances at those locations no more as I'm heavily fed up fighting those problems at each and every show.

The Poker Flat Tournament presents: Patrick Chardronnet vs. David Durango [Poker Flat Recordings 097]

It’s been quite a while since Poker Flat Recoordings released a part of their Tournament-series which was originally established to showcase young talented producers from different countries in this world. This idea might have been subject of change recently and now this comes up as the labels first split-release in ages. Patrick Chardronnets „Days Like These“ is a very uplifting, classic House music tune deep rooted equally in Chicagos history as in contemporary Minimalism and is about to make punters feel good on the floor. On the flip we’ve David Durangos „Move With Me“ stuck to the same roots but referring to them in a deeper, moodier way that – due to its melancholic string arrangement added throughout tracks end part that calls back the original spirit of what Trance once has been – is more fitting to be played out at the end of a nice clubnight.

Dan Berkson & James What feat. Robert Owens – Keep On [Dessous Recordings 082]

Dan Berkson & James What team up with House musics main voice for their latest shot on Dessous Recordings and together they provide nothing less but an anthem that is classic, true souled House ready to stand test of time – now and forever. One to fall for instantly and one of those tunes that are remembered immediately after being heard once. Remixes are provided by the likes of Stimming, Two Armadillos and Phillys hero King Britt who delivers a dark, pumping re-lick that is about to set especially NYC- and Miami-located dancefloors on fire due to its rolling, slightly acidic attitude. Massive.

Symbion – Ambient Soundscapes E.P. [Pharmacom Records 042]

„Ambient Soundscapes“ is a near to perfect title for Symbion’s latest release on Pharmacom Records as it exactly describes what one gets here. All four tracks have to be filed under the flag of Deep Listening Music and showcase the artists total understanding of Ambient and ChillOut culture. It’s quite a pity that there ain’t nearly no chance to experience this kind of music in a proper environment no more as most of the clubs and venues these days do not feature Ambient rooms for what reason ever but listening to these tracks over and over again proves that there is a need to play this music out loud, coze it needs space to unfold which is not provided on headphones or your home stereo.

Nox – I Shall Consider It [Super Six Goodies 045]

Lovers of more experimental and advanced electronic dance music shall consider to check out Nox’ six sketches on this E.P. which is to be released via Super Six Goodies these days. From raw and uncut Electro to pure, bangin’ as fuck sawtooth bassline induced Techno the story goes and unleashes a special kind of energy was desperatly missed since the heydays of Techno raves somewhat in the 90s. Now it’s back and it keeps my head noddin’ back and forth and back again... Move yr ass to this!

Rückwärts Im Uhrzeigersinn [Das Drehmoment 010]

Our favorite Berlin-based label Das Drehmoment is about to release a new 2x12" - sic!!! - formatted compilation "Rückwärts Im Uhrzeigersinn" in early july, featuring a whole of 16 no less than excellent tracks from artists like Lesbian Mouseclicks, Dream Disco, Direct Control, Trans-Active Nightzone plus many others and is about to take the hearts of all, Cosmic- / Italo Disco- / Ingenious Dilletantes- / Electro Pop-lovers by storm due to its incredible musical quality. Combined with a huge hit and crossover factor - yes, there might even be a few Indie headz dancing to tunes like "That's You" or couples in love being emotionally overwhelmed by the sweet kitsch of "Forbidden" - within not only one but a few if not all tracks on this one "Rückwärts Im Uhrzeigersinn" is hopefully going to be the most selling release on Das Drehmoment so far, putting them on the table of not only dedicated music nerds but introducing these great sounds to a wider audience. A must have or - as they say in german - name it a "Pflichtkauf".

Lehto – Acid Abduction E.P. [Säurebad Records 009]

Heavy stuff for the mindstrong. Dark, hard hitting bassdrums meet aggressive, psychedelic Acid structures that are about to blow ones mind out, off and beyond the borders of the universe. Only to be played out at absolute peak times. Killer and well fitting for AcidTechno induced teknivals.

Maniax – Plutonium Boy [Moonbootique]

The Maniax a.k.a. Marc Deal & Ferris MC or Electroferris as he refers to himself these days are back on track with a new release on Moonbootique Records and it’s their best work so far. „Plutonium Boy“ is an anthemic mixture of NeoTrance and ElectroHouse for big rooms, making punters raise their hands to the top and setting the roof on fire. On the flip this one is remixed by Ante Perry, who contributes a more minimalistic attitude and delivers a nice, but not that excellent rework as the original version. But still: recommended.

Sasha Roshalle – Ultramania [Super Six Goodies 044]

Is it Trance? Or Progressive? Or Psychedelic? Or just melodic Club Techno with a few Breaks elements? To answer these questions is not an easy one as Sasha Roshalle’s track – three of them to be found here – combine all those elements and come across as an amalgamation of sound that might be played out to and appreciated by audiences quite different – underground based open air ravers as well as Ibiza’s or UK’s main room clubbers will dance their ass off to these tracks.
