Markus Floats - Fourth Album [Constellation 174]

Released via Montreal's Constellation Records on October 20th, 2k23 is Markus Floats' "Fourth Album", the - obviously - fourth longplayer in a series of numbered albums which started all the way back in 2017. Once again fusing his avantgarde leaning electronic-infused compositions with additional contributions from a carefully picked set of guest artists which are Ari Swan, James Nichols Dumile Goddard and Lucas Huang Marcus Floats presents a total of of twelve brand new pieces laid out over the course of 32 minutes, with some of them being mere miniatures of under two minutes length. Musically, the "Fourth Album" explores a sonic range from friendly, curious and playful Future Jazz meets scenic Indietronica to highly detailed, ever cascading dance numbers such as "Death" which surely is drawing inspiration from Modern Classical arrangement techniques to the ominous brooding bass pulses of the aptly named "Interlude", the creaky, unsettling off-harmonies presented in "Death (Pt. 2)" whilst "Second Introduction" pairs short, noisy, Plunderphonics-informed sequences with, again, playful and uplifting Modern Classical variations just to name a few. Defo one for an avantgarde-informed audience interested in non-linear composition, this.

Lenhart Tapes - Dens [Glitterbeat Promo]

Well, if a forthcoming release is announced and described as being produced by an '...Ethno-Noise outfit...' in the accompanying press sheet expectations rise and whoever coined the term has gotten us curious. Presenting a total of eight brand new pieces on this limited to 300 copies vinyl edition Mr. Hernando explores vantablack, granular and futuristic Dark Ambient x Industrial textures from the very beginning of the opening cut "Visita De Insomnia" onwards, laying out a cold, yet vastly spacious sonic landscape of hostile, quasi exoterrestial qualities garnished with ethereal non-vocalisms before progressing into scraping, partly metallic sounding sound alterations and scientific dronings with "Volupta Tremula", dramatic and highly alarming digital Noize arrangements in "Espejo Estrellado" whereas "Domina OHU" presents a masterly crafted exercise in post-apocalyptic, Rhythm Industrial-informed Cold Ambient bleakness, "La Noche Niega" caters sci-fi leaning Death Ambient in combination with dynamic, yet irregular sweeps of probably modular origin before "Lunar Stellectric" provides closure, hope and a silver lining at the horizon as the most structured, peaceful and minimalist Ambient piece on this longplayer just to name a few. Over the course of 59 minutes the group, comprised of Julia Nolan, Kris Covlin, David Branter and Colin MacDonald, tackles a set of five extended compositions written by Fred Stride, Violet Archer, Betraice Ferreira and Rodney Sharman as well as David Branter himself, covering a range from playful and frolicking Contemporary Classical x Jazz fusion tracks with an almost score'esque tongue-in-cheek quality to soft large scale panoramic layerings somewhat reminiscent of grainy black and white movie scenes of yore, melancholia-inducing (Neo)Classical elegies, carefully arranged multi-layered cascades and whirling. slightly unnerving and off-kilter stop-and-go passages as well as further polyphonic goodness which, in all its glorious beauty, easily lets one forget that one is just listening to a set of saxophones and not to a fully fledged large scale ensemble. Lovely.

Afarin Mansouri - Dancing With Love [Centrediscs]

Scheduled for release via the Canadian Centrediscs label on October 20th, 2k23 is "Dancing With Love", the second full length album effort conceived by Toronto-based and Iran-born vocalist x composer Afarin Mansouri. Over the course of twelve brand new compositions and a total runtime of roughly 55 minutes we see Mansouri, alongside a plethora of contributing fellow musicians, drawing strong inspiration from her personal fears and victories and especially the taboo around female singers and musicians she experienced in her home country before immigrating to Canada more than two decades ago to follow her passion, further study music, especially Opera, and finally grow and become a fully fledged artist herself. This being said, and with some of the vocals even inspired by Iranian poetry from the 10th century, Mansouri presents an emotional and musically wide-ranged journey from the crackly and vintage sounding opener that is the title track "Love Is In The Air" which evokes memories of revue shows of the 1940s and the cinematic efforts to emulate those on screen to the Classical x (Neo)Classical arrangements of "Astonishment", the classic Opera references in "Omnipreset", the tender whispers of the Balearic-infused "Endless Sea", the dancey and jubilant arrangements of "Hope" as well as the most obviously Oriental x World Music inspired cut that is "Alchemy" just to lay out a rough sonic spectrum of what this impressive sophomore album has to offer, even for those who aren't deeply familiar with any one of the genres mentioned. Consider this a gateway drug which could lead to further explorations of the field.

Lotto - Summer [Gusstaff Records]

Put out on the circuit via Gusstaff Records on September 29th, 2k23 is "Summer", the second of two parallel albums cooked up by the Polish trio named Lotto which are released on the same day. Stylistically opposite to "Axolotl", the second part of this set, we see the six tracks and 36 minutes spanning "Summer" following a path of inspiration opened by a subdued, nearly acoustic concert set played in Warsaw in May 2k22, resulting in an array of tender, intimate, yet dark'ish and nocturnal, oftentimes inward-looking PostRock tunes with cuts like "Heater" consciously dabbling with minimalistic repetitions, "Oranges" gravitating towards subtle DarkJazz-influences and "Situation" drifting off into sparse, yet comforting dreamlands whereas the concluding "Someone" provides the most tender and caressing Post-PostRock low end we've come across in a while just to lay out a rough concept of what is happening on this well recommended album piece.

Zeitkratzer & Reinhold Friedl - Scarlatti [Zeitkratzer Productions / Karlrecords]

Put out on the circuit via Zeitkratzer Productions in collaboration with Karlrecords on September 22nd, 2k23 is "Scarlatti", the latest album by long standing composer and piano player Reinhold Friedl and his Zeitkratzer ensemble which are presenting a menu of six compositions based on and inspired by a certain piano sonata written by Domenico Scarlatti who lived from 1685 to 1757. Over the course of a total runtime of 45 minutes the album starts from a sonic angle provided by intense, klaxon'esque and slightly washed out drone pulses interrupted by periods of silence, working their way through winding harmonics and careful deviations from the intended path giving off a DarkAmbient-leaning vibe for frosty late fall evenings, progresses into caressing piano minimalisms of enchanted qualities followed by disturbingly cold Industrial Noize arrangements, ambient'esque Minimal Music based upon singular piano tones and subdued atmospheric dronings, further dense large scale panoramic, yet slightly off-kilter ensemble arrangements before finishing on stripped down, slightly melancholia-inducing romanticisms in the 10+ minutes spanning closing piece that is "Aster". A lovely listening experience, even for those who haven't ever heard of the musical works of Domenica Scarlatti.

01. Christoph De Babalon - Leaving Time Super Hexagon Records 007]
Christoph De Babalon. Legend, yet an insular and elusive figure within the electronic music scene, from his highly praised releases on Digital Hardcore Recordings to works unleashed by his own Cross Fade Enter Tainment label. Now the abstract junglist is back with a new release on Super Hexagon Records, catering a set of four highly fascinating tracks covering a range from brooding Future Tribal-infused Dubstep x Bass Music to deep atmospheric IDM Jungle, earth shaking low end minimalism and things way beyond which turn out to be an essential addition to the collection of any experienced bass lover out there.

02. Sven Väth - What I Used To Play [Cocoon Recordings]
A legacy box. A lesson in electronic music history. Call it what you want. Long standing DJ, producer, icon and Cocoon Recordings head honcho Sven Väth went back in time and recapitulated the early stages of his career, a time when House, Techno and all contemporary derivatives of those genres weren't around, yet electronic and electronically infused dance music started to emerge, slowly building and laying out the foundation of the electronic dance music scene as we know it today. We're talking the 80s and this is the era this massive 12 x 12" vinyl box covers, not in its entirety but filled to the brim with tracks and anthems Mr. Väth used to play throughout those years - from Whodini's "Magic Wand" to Primal Scream's "Loaded" remixed by Andrew Weatherall, from A Split Second's "Flesh" to Meat Beat Manifesto's "Helter Skelter", from Rockers Revenge's "Walking On Sunshine" to Raze's "Break 4 Love", A Guy Called Gerald's "Voodoo Ray" and way beyond, featuring a lot of well known cuts and a few long lost gems, all carefully cut and mastered with a maximum of two tracks per side which leaves a lot of room for the individual tunes' dynamics to unfold and therefore providing a well crafted assortment for those who're just starting out to explore the foundation and history of electronic music or - like us - the avid completist and music historian keen to add such a personal selection of cuts to their collection despite the fact that they might already own quite a bunch of those tracks as original pressing or re-releases anyway. A collectors item for sure, yet not necessarily one that is essential x unmissable or really aiming at Sven Väth's core audience at this point in time.
