New Residencies & Places

All those who've been checking these pages on a regular level might have recognized that there's been a bunch of new names and places appearing here - places baze.djunkiii picked up new residencies or just the occasional DJ-set every few weeks. A few more are to come soon, so I guess it's time to let you ppl know what they're about.

First of all there's Die Welt Ist Schön, which might be best described as high quality cocktail bar attended by those appreciating exquisite drinks and not necessarily care about money spent when they're out drinking. Not a place for dancing really but ppl are appreciating some nice music so it's usually fun to play there although often their bookings fly in quite spontaneous so there's not much time to announce them right. Another place is the Bacana - their website might be down at this very moment as they're working on a design relaunch - in Hamburg / Eimsbüttel, running as a coffee bar from 9 A.M. and now trying to establish DJ nights from thursdays to saturdays starting from 8 P.M. til late. I've been spinning there only once but things seem like to be in progress and the next date is fixed for "A Freestyle Affair".
Dancing is optional at Spice, which is relatively new on the Hamburg party circuit and is somewhat in between an electronic music bar and a micro club location. Regular nights are on fridays and saturday plus, now, thursdays which should work out right as it is located right within the Schanzenviertel, one of the hippest quartes of central Hamburg. baze.djunkiii will be spinning there every 1st / 3rd thursday of the month from June onwards, maybe the fifth as well if there's one. Finally there's a place named HongKong located in the streets of Hamburg's famous redlight / amusement district St.Pauli which is a well established micro clubbing venue for all lovers of electronic music mostly featuring House / TechHouse and Minimal Techno. Starting on June 15th, baze.djunkiii is about to take over tuesday nights in that place except for the 2nd and 5th tuesday which will see Timo Weiner on the decks. Drop by, support and don't forget to bring yr friends.

Torpedo Boyz - Return Of The Ausländers [Lounge Records]

Due for release on may 28th is "Return Of The Ausländers", the third longplay outing of the Berlin-based FunkyBreaks / BigBeat shooting stars Torpedo Boyz which are smashing and mashing up dancefloors ever since their first single "Gimme A Bassline!" - an instant hit in 2004. But this was only the beginning, DJ- and live appearances all over the world followed soon, live shows including a whole band outfit, as well as a Indepent Music Award for their album "Cum On Feel The Boyz" and now it's their new album ready to be awarded and - more important - to shake punters hips on a global level with ingredients as following. Driving Breakbeats, funky basslines, some catchy vocals, a whole bunch of samples and a special fun factor that makes people feel good, no matter if they're electronic music lovers or not. That's a key to major success and I see this album space rocket to the skies within very short time if distribution channels work right.

Anthony Rother - Popkiller 2 [Datapunk]

It's been six years now since Anthony Rother released his album "Pop Killer" on his very own Datapunk-imprint, an album which was well anticipated by clubbers and homelisteners world wide and which was, after seven years on the circuit, his biggest success so far albeit several singles had been hits on the underground circuit before. Now in 2010 Mr. Rother unleashes "Pop Killer 2" just after re-adjusting his label, turning back from pushing new talent and focusing on his own production work again. So what's to be found on "Pop Killer 2"? When it comes to sound his love for classic Electro is still obvious although the typical beat is based on TechHouse / ElectroHouse-influenced 4 by 4 bassdrum patterns, sawtooth basslines are quite epic, melodies clean, hypnotic, catchy and vocals - if used - always a bit moody and darker than your regular club tune. Maybe this is the reason why, apart from electronic clubbers, fans of SynthPop and even genres like Goth and related feel adressed by and dance to the tunes featured on "Pop Killer 2", introducing a genre named "Moderntronics" by Anthony Rother to a widespread audience while pleasing Techno/Electro/Whatever-DJs and punters worldwide at the same time. Spoken in terms of marketing there is a lot of crossover potential in this album which is clearly meant to succeed. Check out.

Trentemøller - Into The Great Wide Yonder [In My Room Promo]

As someone who thought and still thinks that Trentemøller's widely anticipated 2006 album "The Last Resort" is one of the most overrated albums ever and never understood the hype revolving around that danish guy named Anders ever since I gotta admit that his follow up "Into The Great Wide Yonder" which is to be released on his very own imprint In My Room took me by surprise. Electronica-influences are still there but stepped to the back making way for fuzzy Post- and DesertRock, most evident within the first four tracks or A & B side of the vinyl version of this album. Fans of bands like Portishead are most likely to feel home due to an ever present melancholia and those loving their Indie right will feel comfortable with the shoegazing attitude of several songs, which are - although it might sound different - completely played by Mr. Trentemøller himself in a step-by-step and track-by-track process. A proper album aiming at a different audience than "The Last Resort" and time will tell if it gains the same success and sales rates.

Langenberg - Past Present EP [Dessous Recordings 097 Promo]

If there's only one producer to be named constantly working on the fusion of DeepHouse and Dub-influences these days the name of Langenberg might be dropped easily and his forthcoming "Past Present EP" to be released via Dessous Recordings proves this choice once again. All three tracks featured on this 12" are revolving around the same very basic ingredients - slow, pumping beat patterns, some sparse, classic chords and a deep, dubbed out and ever moving sub. No additional ornamentation needed, apart from some echoic vocals snippets on A2 track "Backyard" and steadily evolving string arrangements on the housier "Monday 16th". Well crafted tools for venues run and attended by connaisseurs.

Sven Tasnadi - Tell Me Again [Poker Flat Recordings 113 Promo]

Sven Tasnadi is responsible for cat.no. 113 of Poker Flat Recordings, which is his second 12" outing on Steve Bug's label. And it's the label head himself who adds a special flavor to the title track "Tell Me Again" on side A, serving a deep, sexy relick that fuses magical, Chicago-influenced bassline work, driving hi-hats, seductive vocals and slinky melodies - a perfect late night tune that will be regarded as instant classic. The original version is to be found the flip, well sexy and even going deeper than Steve Bug's remix, accompanied by the additional tune "Groove On (Tasnadi's Edit)" which is more of a peak time piece. Uptempo, featuring some latin percussion elements, haunting stabs and simple, but effective breakdowns - that's the kind of techy House music every DJ wants to serve shortly before the roof is completely on fire.

Remix In Progress

It's only been yesterday that I've been at the studio of the Hamburg-based band The Crystal Apes for a few hours where we started working on a remix / re-edit of one of their recent tracks, laying down ideas & reprocessing sounds. First my mind was set on doing sth. quite reduced in between Dub, BigBeat and the likes of Smith & Mighty stylewise but as things change in progress the direction is going to be somewhat different although the aspect of Dub is still on mind. Next session to come soon, focusing on some arrangement and structure.

Michael Lambart - Terror Disko EP [Super 6 Records 051.5]

Michael Lambart's "Terror Disko EP" is cat.no. 051.5 of Super 6 Records which is surprisingly not as hard or dark as one might expect from its name. What is to be found here are four well-crafted, floor functional, mid-tempo Techno tracks working well as DJ-tools but do not stick out of the mass amount of tunes put on the circuit each and every week. Average stuff.

Sascha Müller - Metaplex EP [Super 6 Records 051]

Fans of raw and uncut Techno are recommended to check out the newest output of Super 6 Records - the "Metaplex EP" by the labels head honcho Sascha Müller, which serves four tunes as banging and functional as they can be. Techno for those who still know what is all about: beats, bass, pressure and an absolutely physical, bodily experience when standing in front of a sound system.

BETA-ZERFALL goes Kiel

Just a short pre-announcement as its just been confirmed these days - on 31st of july our BETA-ZERFALL event will be taking place in Kiel for the very first time. baze.djunkiii and Herr Brandt will be hosting a night at Schaubude, serving the finest in PostPunk, (No)Wave, SynthPop, ElectroPunk, IndieElectro and related.

Tramel Willis - The Anti-Revolution [Pharmacom Records 064]

Seems like Pharmacom Records is taking a stepp further inthe amalgamation of styles with the labels cat.no. 064, Tramel Willis' "The Anti-Revolution". A ten track album featuring (Hard)Trance vs. Guitar experiments, some Downtempo vs. Electro(nica) skits, dubbed out tunes, tribalistic visions and even more. For those who like their tracks short'ish and albums quite diverse this one could be a proper choice.

Voodoopriester - Anblasen [Super 6 Goodies 076]

Bremen's Voodoopriester - better known as Axel Lüers to his parents - is responsible for cat.no. 076 of Super 6 Goodies, serving a banging uptempo Techno tool featuring loads of short vocal cuts from diverse movies - seemingly submarine war movies - which makes this tune quite unique. Sascha Müller delivers a remix version that will be well appreciated by lovers of cold, hectic, highspeed Electro - if you have ever been into releases on labels like Electrix or Andrew Weatherall's Control Tower this remix is the tune of your, and my, choice.

Changes To Come @ Meaniebar

Just coming back from a meeting with Meaniebar, where they told me that they plan to change things musically at their venue and not fitting in electronic music no more. This means for me, after about 3 1/2 years work establishing monday nights there as an optional night out for electronic music lovers, that those nights will be cancelled from july onwards. Sad, but true, not only for me as I really enjoyed the monday nights there no matter if it was packed or only attended by a few but also for Hamburg as Germany's second biggest city as this monday night is the only one in the city which regularly features experimental electronic music and other stuff hardly played out in other venues.

eVADE - One [Super 6 Goodies 075]

Cat.no. 075 of Super 6 Goodies is eVADE's recent two tracker "One", containing the title track alongside another one named "A Fine Day". As one might guess from other eVADE productions these two are dealing with more experimental matters in electronic dance music - "One" emphasizes on a fusion of Electro, Electronica and pure Electro whilst "A Fine Day" explores the field of what could be called Space Ambient. Especially the latter mentioned is well recommended to those being in love with these sepcific genre - a well-crafted albeit a bit too short piece opening spheres of imagination.

Sascha Müller - Robotron E.P. [Super 6 Goodies 074]

Put on the circuit via Super 6 Goodies is Sascha Müller's "Robotron E.P." featuring four pieces named "Robotron I - IV". Stylewise we're talking purist Techno here, partly tool'ish and functional, partly influenced by the raw uncut energy provided by pioneers like Jeff Mills or Joey Beltram. Music for dancefloors.
