baze.djunkiii Chart Haul 03/2018

Elektronengehirn - Ø

With his recently released album we see Malte Steiner a.k.a. Elektronengehirn, also well known and appreciated for his works under the name of Notstandskomitee, explore both beautiful large scale Ambient spheres as well as hyperprecise Clicks'n'Cuts, clattering Industrial, dark electro-acoustic atmospheres and many things, like reprocessed Field Recordings, beyond. A highly recommendable listen for all fans of experimental electronic music which, when it comes to "Hardware", features a potential hit tune for all lovers of underground sci-fi scores for sure. Great stuff.

A beautiful visualization taken from the forthcoming Logistics album "Hologram" which will be released later this week!

Killdren - Work Harder Fucker *Stazma Hyperpunk Remix

After a fucked up weekend this makes our actual Tuesday. Motivational Breakcore is a thing now!

Nadir - Nulla Cambia [Entartete Kunst]

Another relatively fresh release on the Entartete Kunst label is "Nulla Cambia", the twelve track and 26 minutes spanning debut album by a duo named Nadir which is comprised of beatmaker Astrophat and rapper / vocalist Hanzo who interestingly delivers his vocal performance in Italian and therefore is possibly the first Italian HipHop act to be reviewed on these pages. His sharp highspeed flex   perfectly accompanies the albums heavy, highly compressed beats which come across as either bass heavy and rich in detail like the killer 808-bounce "Gomiti Alti" featuring Drowning Dog on vocals as well, bring on a super classic dope instrumental vibe as to be found in the amazing skit that is "Il Galeone" or drift into darker, more threatening territories influenced by both gangsterism and echoes of Mutant HipHop in tunes like "Fra", the banging "Boxer" which uses and abuses samples taken from classical music in a close to genius way or the thrilling crimescene bounce that is "Killer Mike". Highly recommend stuff for all outernational HipHop headz.

The Nightcrawlers - The Biophonic Boombox Recordings [Anthology Editions Promo]

Recently released via Anthology Editions and drawing from the vast, 40+ self-released tapes spanning back catalogue of the Philadelphia-based experimental synth pioneers The Nightcrawlers is "The Biophonic Boombox Recordings", a compilation album that has been announced on these pages prior and is aiming to provide a proper overview over the bands body of work released between 1979 and somewhen in the early 90s. Opening with "Phase I: Discovery And Approach" which provides a kind of desolate, yet futuristic and at the same time scientific feel before drifting off into busy, meandering and surely KrautRock-influenced Cosmic / Kosmische Musik realms with "Beckoning Beacon" whereas the following "Geistesblitz" emphasizes on the floating, intense live aspects of the groups work with coughing and other noises from the audience still audible and captured on The Nightcrawlers' recording device, a JVC boombox. Following up on this sampler promo is "Crystal Loop III", presenting an array of multilayered, crystalline sonic fountains and tender underlying percussion elements providing a complex, yet captivating rhythmic pulse before the already featured "Luv-Li-Musik" creates an atmosphere of sheer synth beauty. Furthermore "Zeitgeber" is a massive, 24 minutes spanning jam, a perfect blueprint for defining Synth as a genre in its own right, clearly influenced by the likes of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, predating Ambient by far and telling a true story due to its musical twists and turns, even winding into mystical Field Recordings-infused realms before "Reprieve" finally returns to a dreamy, improvised space-age drift into one's inner mind and deepest layers of imagination. Highly recommended.

Mahdyar - Seized [Kowloon Records Promo]

Released on February 23rd, 2k18 via Kowloon Records is "Seized", the latest outlet by Iran's music export Mahdyar which has been involved and active in the Persian HipHop scene since early on, shaping its form and steering it into a fusion of HipHop-elements, traditional Persian music and Farsi poetry rather than copycatting Western culture one on one. After relocating to Paris for reasons of personal safety due to the cultural shutdown of the countries underground by authorities Mahdyar continued to develop his own musical vision which still incorporates the above mentioned influences yet embeds more of a mystical, often times outerworldly vibe which meets an Illbient- / MutantHip-informed attitude led by highly detailed, complex and multilayered production and glitch techniques whilst providing hints of Future Skweee in tracks like the epic, melodic "Hush", weighs in a sense of cinematic drama with the widescreen "Iran Iraq" or keeps drawing influences from dystopian echoes of UK Bass Music like Post-Garage or Post Dubstep which are to be found in the ever decaying yet beautiful "Running From" to a certain extent. Quite a diverse and unique take, this, which is far beyond anything to be considered as World Music despite its roots in the oriental / arab world.

Stay High - Let Me

The most uplifting Juke / Footwork tune ever! Deep and soulful stuff for all the raving crew.

Tuesday, March 20, 2018

DJ Taye - Still Trippin [Hyperdub Promo]

Put on the circuit in early March, 2k18 is "Still Trippin", the debut album by young Teklife-affiliate and Juke / Footwork producer DJ Taye who's catering a sixteen joint longplay piece on the British Hyperdub-imprint on which he collaborates with quite a bunch of artists from in- and outside the crews circle including Chuck Inglish on the tune "Get It Jukin" which has already been featured on these pages in late December, 2k17 for an early preview shot. With his album the former rapper and beatmaker extends the original raw format of Juke / Footwork and broadens its influences, introduces jazzy elements in the deep, intimate opener "2094", caters a proper sci-fi anthem with "Trippin'", teams up with DJ Manny to create a proper Breakbeat Soul anthem named "Need It", weighs in Trap / HipHop waves in "Smokeout" which is a collaborational joint with DJ Lucky and indulges into deep romanticism with Odile Myrtil in the synth-heavy "Same Sound". "9090" comes across in a playful, retrofuturist manner, "Another 4" featuring DJ Manny can be defined as Bedroom Juke if this shall be recognized as a sub-subgenre , "Bonfire" with DJ Paypal is a hyper-nervous, Jazz-sampling joint for die-hard fans of the genre and "The Matrix", the next DJ Manny-collab, weighs in a fascinating, 80s-reminiscing 8bit melodies and tweeting scratches in tilt mode alongside killer piano chords whilst  "Pop Drop" with DJ Paypal pays homage to the GhettoHouse movement once led by labels like Dancemania and the likes of, building the foundation of what Juke / Footwork emerged from. Teaming up with Uniqu3 for "Gimme Some Mo" DJ Taye sets out for some wonderful vintage synth chords accompanying an array of busy beats and samples, "Truu" with DJ Paypal evokes memories of classic Jungle anthems although not flirting with the genre beatwise at any point before "Closer" introduces a laid back, funky overall feel for buzzing dancefloors, "I'm Trippin" brings forth a hard, electroid vibe and the concluding collaboration with Fabi Reyna named "I Don't Know" evokes memories of dreamy, spaced out and Easy Listening-related Japanese ClubPop from the likes of Pizzicato Five etc. for a reason. Well diverse and well good, this!

Valvan / Trou [Ciel Bleu Et Petits Oiseaux 033]

Coming in from the deepest depths of the French underground is this limited to 24 copies split release between Valvan and Trou, released via the cassette tape-focused imprint Ciel Bleu Et Petits Oiseaux. Whilst the opening track on the A-side starts with what could be a sample or Field Recording from a feature film or even some cheap porn production only to transform into a massive wall of grinding, although non-developing HarshNoize after a minute or two to end on a perverted sexual connotation again we see the second tune on this side drift of into more of a rattling, large scale construction-site reminiscing variation of HarshNoize before the flipside features a 40+ minutes collaborational effort of both artists joining forces to create a heavy maelstrom of sonic darkness and everlasting turmoil and destruction. One for the headstrong.

Palmbomen II - Memories Of Cindy [Beats In Space Records]

Coming at us since February 9th, 2k18 via Beats In Space Records is Palmbomen II's spatial, non-categorizable, diffused album transmission which is "Memories Of Cindy". Housed in 2CD format of which 'Part 1' and 'Part 2', both sitting on CD1, have been featured on these pages prior in full length video format, we see Kai Hugo a.k.a. Palmbomen II explore an outerworldly realm of fascinating, raw and string-loaden House music, bordering genres like DeepHouse, Intelligent Techno and Detroit Techno whilst providing the occasional, spiralling Acid line and catering a charming, DIY lo-fi approach in terms of production values which bring the works of producers like Hieroglyphic Being or Levon Vincent to ones mind immediately. Sliding in the occasional portion of Synth, (Neo)Cosmic and Vaporwave-informed Space Ambient at times alongside bits of slo-mo Chicago House "Memories Of Cindy" is a deep, hypnotizing and well-fascinating body of work which brings us a potential, Acid- / AmbientTrance-reminiscing hit with the spiralling tune named "Telleac" whilst the follow-up "Disappoint Island" introduces a future genre to be defined as Horror House to a great effect and "Are You Friends With Amber?" provides more spaced Intelligent Techno meets AcidTrance for highly advanced underground dancefloors. Recommended.

Drowning Dog & Malatesta - Sick Of This Shit [Entartete Kunst Records]

Coming in directly from the hands of the artists is "Sick Of This Shit", the latest album outing by the international, now Berlin-based underground HipHop duo Drowning Dog & Malatesta which we've met only recently when they were playing a show alongside Optimus GFN at Hamburg's Hafenklang venue. Together, the pair creates a dark, yet bouncing and unique take on conscious underground HipHop bordering the realms of so-called Mutant HipHop at times. With Malatesta on production surely playing out on and bringing forth an evolutionary step of his influences which he stated to be Illbient, grinding, doomed and sparse Downbeat as well as stuff released on Mille Plateaux' former 'Electric Ladyland'-series alongside Drowning Dog on vocal duties, spitting her on point, razor sharp lyrics without giving the audience a break we see the duo create one of the most fascinating HipHop longplay outings we've come across in ages with "Free Thought" not only being the albums potential hit single but also a blueprint of how to keep BoomBap fresh whilst combining elaborate raps and unique, off-kilter hooks to a massive, well bouncing effect. Large up!

A little background story on how this release ended up with us:

Henriko S. Sagert - Salus Track (Original Mix)

Deep and dubby vibes coming straight at us from the deepest underground realms of the German capital that is Berlin. Sweet tune!

Sandro Mussida - Ventuno Costellazioni Invisibili [Metrica 001 Promo]

Scheduled for March 30th, 2k18 via the freshly installed Metrica label is "Ventuno Costellazioni Invisibili", the latest full length composition by Italian composer Sandro Mussida executed by a whole bunch of eight musicians in Milan using both real instruments as well as live looping techniques to put pieces together. Being recorded in 5.1 surround sound the two parts of the composition the result of this project turns out to be a well thought out, hyperfragile sonic construct of spatial, outerworldly beauty in which lonely minor chord piano tones are hovering atop a background of ethereal, tender strings and other intertwined, sometimes nervous high frequency musings evolving into a looped, nerve-wrecking, siren'esque crescendo around halfway through the compositions runtime before returning to calming, minimalist and floating arrangements of a focused, yet timeless and most beautiful nature. Great stuff for fans and followers of Modern Contemporary Classical music for sure.

Para - Paraphon [Freifeld Tonträger 025]

Released in late December, 2k17 via Freifeld Tonträger is "Paraphon", the third full-length album by the musical triumvirate Para consisting of Elena Kakaliagou, Ingrid Schmoliner and Thomas Stempkowski which are exploring a unique musical realm defined by the trios instrumentation incorporating french horn, voice, piano and double bass. Based on this foundation the trio recorded the seven, 53 minutes spanning, tracks on the album in one live session taking place at Kaleidophon Festival in Ulrichsberg back in 2016, creating highly intense atmospheres, a score'esque, partly even Film Noir-infused vibe, incorporating both elements of NeoClassical, JazzNoir and Free Improv whilst incorporating stuttering Spoken Word techniques and Scat-influences with the dark'ish, spine-tingling close to 10 minutes spanning "Ifestio" as a thrilling highlight for all those digging deep into the realms of experimental, yet instrument-played music whilst the follow up "Itane Mia Fora" brings on a horror'esque tension for all in the know. Defo a specialists release, this one.

Taylor Swift - Delicate (Official Video)

It seems like since "Look What You Made Me Do" has been put on the circuit we're developing a precious love and understanding for Taylor Swift which seems to be the only global Pop act we can relate to musically since... ... ...

... ... ... Madonna's "Music" or Britney Spears' "Toxic" maybe?

The Blow - Brand New Abyss [Womanproducer 001 Promo]

Fresh on the circuit for March 16, 2k18 is "Brand New Abyss", the latest album by Melissa Dyne and Khaela Mircich a.k.a. The Blow on their recently launched imprint Womanproducer. Catering a menu of eight tracks the duo continues their journey which has begun with their first full-on album release approximately 16 years ago, opening the album with a "Peaceful Easy Feeling", a quite swinging piece of lovely, Electronica-based Leftfield Pop / Indietronica for advanced dancefloors, followed by "Dark Cold Magic" which is another lighthearted, innocent take on ethereal Indietronica with more of a singer / songwriter feel to it whilst "So There" provides more of a darker, bass heavy variation of the pairs well fascinating musical work that surely is meant to reach an audience much wider than the sonic circles of electronic music lovers for sure. With "The Greatest Love Of All" The Blow present an IDM-based hit single for future times, "The Woman You Want Her To Be" is based on more of an Industrial / Electronica-crossover with quite a bit of drive and an intense Spoken Word-attitude, "Get Up" gets crowds moving on a swinging tip and evokes memories of the former and long gone Berlin-based label Digital Kranky whereas "Think About Me" is more on a spaced out, romantic tip and the final take on "Summer" is minimalist, yet floating and captivating killer song which - in a better world - deserves heavy daytime radio rotation for a reason. Epicly good!

Dr. NoiseM - Studio Works 25 [Dr. NoiseM Tapes]

Dr. NoiseM is back with his latest, and 25th, sequel of his 'Studio Works'-series, catering another eleven track menu of formerly unreleased electronic experimentation to his friends, fans and followers. The opening "Christmas Noise" seemingly seems to originate from a classic christmas song played at ultra slow speed, resulting in a warped and eerie, horror-inducing vibe whereas the short skits "E-Guitar Disorder" and "Massacre" bring on short violent pulses for those in the know and "Naked Harsh" pierces our ears with quite a lot of high to mid frequency Noize stretched over a playtime of nearly 20 minutes. Following up is "Perfect Machines", exploring subaquatic, droning Sci-Ambient  of a futurist quality whereas "Runner" is another micro-skit, catering 10 seconds of metallic, strange transmissions whilst "Süsses Oder Saures" once again gravitates towards the trademark Dark Ambient sound of  Dr. NoiseM's 'The CDr A-B-C" series and "Untitled" takes us on an approx. 18 minutes journey into intense electrical buzzing and clicking background rhythm signatures. With "Untitled_Untitled" we're getting deeper into atmospheric, yet threatening Cold Ambient territories, "Winter Zauberwald" brings on fragile, crystalline and mystic vibes from ancient aeons and the final tune entitled "Zoltan" introduces a new, concluding wall of scraping, raw Noize ploughing through ones melting braincells over the course of 12:30 minutes. Deep!

Gigaldi - Das Ganze Doppelalbum [Interstellar Records 044 Promo]

Released via Interstellar Records in late 2k17 is "Das Ganze Doppelalbum", the first ever longplay piece by Gigi Gratt using his freshly introduced artistic moniker Gigaldi which, for this album, refers to the classic composer Vivaldi as each of the four tracks on this longplay piece is named after one of the years seasons. Fusing a droning Ambient approach and bits of Contempory Classical music the opening tune that is "Winter" introduces an experimental, yet rhythmically thrilling and even dancefloor-functional composition which might even work well in highly advanced Techno sets, before coming to an abrupt halt around minute five, continuing on a more multi-layered, organic bass featuring level and a Morricone'esque closing sequence whereas "Frühling" presents an epic, carefully layered arrangement of brass instruments bringing on a culminating, ever repeating cascade of positivity and delight followed by stripped down polyrhythms and bits of Oriental Jazz melancholia before finally turning into a buzzing swarm of metallic, alien bees attacking and surrounding the listener for minutes to come. With "Sommer" we're entering glistening sonic realms seemingly slightly influenced by traditional Spanish music and Off-Americana whilst the final cut "Herbst" opens on a calm and collected Post-PostRock vibe, uninterruptedly drifting off into dreamlike, psychedelic PopAmbient realms and coming on strong as our favorite tune to be found on "Das Ganze Doppelalbum" for sure.

Spyros Polychronopoulos - Live Electronic Music [Room40 Promo]

Put on the circuit via the ever active Australian label Room40 is "Live Electronic Music", an ambitious collaboration of the Greek composer and producer Spyros Polychronopoulos and likeminded artist and collaborator Fotis Kontomichos. Based upon the idea of a software device that plays back one individual piece of music differently on each repetition due to reprocessing five separated audio channels, the pair creates a 22+ minutes piece of ever changing, self-interfering nature incorporating both Ambient / Deep Listening sequences, shifting sonic masses, seemingly field recorded clicks and clacks, swampy electronic movements, harsh sci-fi Noize and cold extraterrestrial atmospheres that surely isn't meant to be grasped by everyone but will speak to the trained and experienced listener of experimental electronic music for sure.

Peter Kernel - Men Of The Women (Official Video)

Post-apocalyptic Desert Rock taken from the new Peter Kernel album "The Size Of The Night" which is about to be released in March 2k18.

Sascha Müller [Super Six Records Extra 063]

Recently released via his very own Supersix Records-imprint is Sascha Müller's latest untitled twelve track album which starts with "Funktionales Karma Part 02", a piece of ultraminimalist ElectroPhonk with a jazzy twist whilst "Hypnotised" is a well-seductive blueprint of raw and pumping, Dub-informed House for those who know, "Funktionales Karma 03" dives deep into realms of subaquatic, drexciyan Electronica / IDM and "Pure Analog Part 01" brings on raw electroid Techno sporting ever morphing sawtooth synth lines and hints of Acid. With "The Cube" we're getting a serving of beautifully deep low-end Ambient Techno, "Zebrabeat I" is laying out some captivating, raw take on wildstyle AcidHouse, "Abuse Your Illusion" weighs in stripped down, highly functional Techno and "Burn Up My AKS" offers a well tripping journey into abstract, highly distorted realms of Unformatted Techno and abstract screaming Phonk for highly advanced dancefloors that do groove along to Lassigue Bendthaus-productions as well. Furthermore "Funktionales Karma Part 04" goes deep into spatial, droning Ambient territories and pinging synth garnishing , "Modern Primitive Evil (Part 02)" brings back memories of first retrofuturist  steps in electronic music production committed by the likes of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and other avantgarde studios of the time, "Pure Analog Part 02" caters more epic AcidHouse action and the final cut "Zebrabeat II" takes on a more wildstyl'ish Acid attitude for dancefloors in ecstatic motion. Good stuff.

Aiden Baker & Gareth Davis - Invisible Cities [Karlrecords 045 Promo]

Put on the circuit via Karlrecords on January 19th, 2k18 is "Invisible Cities", the first ever collaboration album crafted by Aidan Baker and bass clarinetist Gareth Davis. Together the pair creates a selection of four tracks spanning entire 46 minutes, opening with "Memory", a deep and beautiful take on cinematic Ambient with a melancholia-infusing touch of Jazz Noir for collectors of scores and deep thinkers whilst the follow up that is "Sky" stays close to this musical vision whilst implementing a thrilling electrical buzz and more of a nightly feel to its overall vibe. With "Signs" the duo brings on an intro sequence of Field Recordings probably captured on a summerly street scene, paired with slowly emerging synth fountains and a warm, all embracing overall atmosphere whereas the concluding  "Desire" is a fragile and tender 15+ minutes lesson in sheer, untouched Ambient beauty for true genre connaisseurs. Lovely.

Eau Rouge - Jupiter Drive

This one's for the Indie headz out there. Happy weekend!

DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess - Psalm Tree [Jahmoni Music]

Coming in straight from the offices the Munich-based imprint Jahmoni Music is DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess's third musical outing on the label which is her "Psalm Tree" EP, a four tracker that turns out to be her most elaborate production effort so far. Opening with "To Evacuate Is Difficult And Infrequent" we see the Dutch artist fusing her unique Future Tribal approach with heavy Rhythm Industrial-influences, obscure vocal utterings and samples seemingly taken from news reports whilst "To Reveal The Secret" is based on a mechanical rhythmic pattern reminiscent to a train rattling on tracks once again garnished with repetetive sample arrangements, probably originating from the American south. On the flip "Walking Around Aimlessly" brings on beats in reverse and innocent background whistling, an amalgamation which surely has an interesting effect on someones sonic perception before the final cut "To Sing Along" provides a unique and surely different take on highspeed IDM / Drill'n'Bass for advanced, yet playful dancefloors on overdrive. Good stuff.

baze.djunkiii Charts 03/2018

01. DJ Sneak - Show Me The Way / Feels Good [Henry Street Music]
House music from the 90s is my personal jam these days and therefore there's no reason not to add this Henry Street Music re-issue to the collection as it holds two of DJ Sneak's finest creations on one 12", gravitating more towards a melodic and deeper end rather than to DJ Sneak's trademark and tracky DiscoHouse style of a more reduced nature. Pure joy and pleasure, this!

02. The F Word [BLAKE 001]
A bootleg of clearly unknown origin that really made my day when I found it. Drum'n'Bass on a soft, soulful, liquid and somehow cheesy level, garnished with sweet vocals of both male and female origin. Spread over three tracks this is Drum'n'Bass for lovers, cliche as fuck and still lovely like a warm, early summers day.

03. Dr. NoiseM - Derception [Dr. NoiseM Tapes]

04. [PERSPEKTIV 002 Whitelabel]
What a banger. Two tracks on this stamped whitelabel for all those who like their Techno dark, stomping and ravey. Proper tools for massive primetime sets in humungous warehouse spaces. One for the strobe and laser crew!

Goner - Yogascum [Hallowground Promo]

Released via the Hallowground-imprint on November 24th, 2k17 is "Yogascum", the latest longplay effort released by Martin Maischein under his artistic moniker Goner. Announced earlier on these pages through the posting of the album track "YS 2" which irritatingly sounds totally different on our promo CD compared to the featured video, we see Goner collaborate with artists like noise cellist UnterLala and Mark Godwin on this album, exploring static, not much evolving or progressing Noize territories in all the three other tracks named "YS 1", "YS 3" and "Endtitle" which makes us wonder if rather our promo copy is faulty or if the label accidentally uploaded a wrong track for the video teaser. We are puzzled.

This might be one of the most unsettling video transmissions to be found on the interwebz these days.
