01. Xmal Deutschland - Gift: The 4AD Years [4AD]
Oh, what a glorious box set even though the term 'box' might be a little far fetched for a quite flimsy triple vinyl case which holds not only the Xmal Deutschland album masterpieces "Tocsin" and "Fetisch", which both have been sitting in my collection for many years as og pressings, but more importantly an additional disc featuring remastered versions of all tracks of their seminal 1983 singles "Qual" and "Incubus Succubus" which were - and are still - milestones of Goth and PostPunk culture, not only in Germany. Pressed on translucent dark red vinyl, housed in individually designed outer and innersleeves and accompanied by an extensive booklet covering photos, texts and other memorable snippets from the bands history this is a well essential addition to every genre aficionados collection. Even more so if one has had regular encounters with a few of the band members in the past.

Carlo Cattano - Rituals [Aut Records 133]

Another fresh album released by the Italian Aut Records imprint on June 24th, 2k25 is "Rituals", the latest outing by a five piece ensemble led by baritone sax and alto flute player Carlo Cattano who's accompanied by Emanuele Parrini, Tony Cattano, Cristiano Nuovo and Antonia Moncada in this specific musical setting. Catering a menu of nine brand new compositions rolled out over exactly 55 minutes and 55 seconds we see the quintet embarking on a deep, melancholia-inducing, slightly dusted and vintage sounding tip with the opener "Ntzu" which evokes memories of traditional lore shared over generations, candle-lit taverns and slow dances of yore whereas "Riff 3" opens with playful, yet enchanted flutes, remnants of echoes of what could be interpreted as oriental influences and a largely tender and romantic vibe before drifting into slow, yet complex drum rhythms and expertly executed bass works for an extended sequence. Furthermore we find quite uplifting and probably even tongue-in-cheek violin string pluckings in the stripped down slow Jazz jam that is "Ciuscia" which return, even though on a deeper and more inward-looking note in the rather uptempo dancefloor cut named "Windows" whereas the final "John Tchicai" waves goodbye on a classy, yet once again slightly vintage and old-timey note and therefore rounds off quite and interesting album for dedicated fans of Contemporary Jazz.

DalaiQuartet - Brazzaville [Aut Records 131]

Another fresh release for the Italian staple that is the Aut Records imprint is "Brazzaville", the label and general debut for the DalaiQuartet which was put out on the circuit as the labels cat.no. 131 on June 10th, 2k25. Comprised of Flavio Zanutini, Mirko Cisilino, Marzia Tomada and Emanuel Donadelli the small ensemble caters a menu of nine brand new compositions rolled out over the course of 39 minutes, opening with the measured and sustained brass harmonies of "Intro / Slaughter Meat" which are backed by a wild and thundering drum foundation providing a stark and surprising contrast to the tunes overall feel with the more dramatic sequel "Once" following along on a similar, yet rather repetetive and therefore intense path with additional layers of Funk provided by Tomada's tight take on double bass performance. Furthermore we see "J.B. Alternatives" catering an amalgamation of deeply emotional Jazz with a cinematic and certainly nocturnal attitude whilst pieces like "Parodia Di Un Incontrio" are diving into tender romanticisms and caressing slow jams whereas the short quasi-interlude that is "As Steve" brings back classic brass stabs and a kind of score'esque quality especially suitable for 70s espionage flics just to name a few.

E_wann - Tongeren Bay Area Rascal [Isope 001]

Put out on the circuit as the very first release of the Belgium-based Isope label in early 2k16 is "Tongeren Bay Area Rascal", the six track debut release for the labels head honcho and founder E_wann who's diving deep into a realm of nerve-wrecking, highly experimental electronic dance music with this one, starting with the eardrum shattering high frequency feedbacks of "Little Bat Rhymes" sitting atop a foundation of dry Unformatted Wonky Techno whereas "TBAR", an echo of what could be a lo-fi TribeTekno affair, drowns in layers and layers of raw noise and "HSTonHiNRG" balances between whipping lo-fi Techno and filtered Rhythm Industrial abstractions. On the flipside "Stokedjokes" sees E_wann on a hefty, yet slightly monotonous experimental Techno tip incorporating a set of weird samples and intense filter action for the headstrong whereas "Wookie", the most playable and straightforward cut on this release, touches base with relentless Gabber x Hardcore before the final cut that is "Scratch Bl33ps & Samples" indeed provides tools for the more adventurous DJs out there. This is intense

Dooom Orchestra - Our Sea Lies Within II [Aut Records 129]

Released via the ever more active Aut Records label on May 13th, 2k25 is "Our Sea Lies Within II", the direct sequel to the ensembles firstling which was put out on the circuit in April of 2k24. Drawing energy from and functioning as a seamless continuation of the recording session that brought us the groups debut we see the Dooom Orchestra embarking on a journey into quasi-ritual rhythm signatures and longing sustained Jazz Improvisations with the opening tune that is "Sicapoo" which also seems to incorporate echoes of elements of Turkish / Arab / Oriental tonalities and structures alongside a good portion of off-harmonic intensity whereas pieces like "Vegvisir" bring forth a more scenic, raw and intimate atmosphere and an innate danger heralding tension before the "Jade Monkey Temple" immediately explodes into a screaming FreeJazz x Free Improv crescendo of sorts. Furthermore cuts like "Hail Storm God Nara Swamp Blues" surprise the attentive listener with an ultraminimalist take on Avantgarde x Modern Contemporary composition before entering looming DarkJazz territories undeniably infused by deep melancholia whilst the "East River Prayer" ventures even deeper into eerie DarkJazz lands and "For All Thing To Come" waves goodbye with an array of nebulous yet ethereal choirs touching base with organic Ambient non-vocalisms for a closing. Good stuff, this.

Stak Etop - Roxtox Into Hictose [Isope 002]

Put out on the circuit via the Belgian Isope label on June 20th, 2k16 is "Roxtox Into Hictose", the label debut for the elusive, yet ever active - and presumably Finnish? - producer Stak Etop who also operates under aliases like Knacks Stehkopf and 0.5W on this five track EP. Opening with "Negatron Insel" we see Stak Etop on a rather relentless and hard stomping MonoAcid tip backed by dry, highly compressed bassdrums and spiralling, braincell wrecking synth sweeps as well as a well hypnotic lo-fi main motif followed by the heavy and uncompromising (Hard)Techno approach of "Defualt" whereas "Fromtheplast", produced under the moniker Knacks Stehkopf, brings forth a rather extreme amalgamation of Unformatted Techno, FreeTekno and Rhythm Industrial focused on harsh high frequency modulations and a totally unhinged, almost jam-like take on production. On the flip there's "Molluski", with Stak Etop using the sonic nom de guerre 0.5W, an eerie, ghostly and highly atmospheric Techno cut reminiscent of the French underground scene of the late 90s whilst the final cut "Hey Komm Mit In Die Fickpartei!" dabbles with a fully over the top Wonky Techno meets Gabber crossover vibe for a closing. One for true underground dancefloors.

Wil Bolton - Stari Grad [Sound In Silence 123]

Put out on the circuit via the Athens-based Sound In Silence label on June 30th, 2k25 is Wil Bolton's "Stari Grad", a 42 minutes spanning longplay piece which, interms of its title, pays homage to the old town quarters of the Serbian capital of Belgrade in which the album was recorded - more specifically within the confines of Radio Belgrade's Electronic Studio. With both tracks - "Skadarlija" and "Venizelosova" - spanning 21 minutes each Bolton caters what could be referred to as a classic Ambient release for the label, with calm, yet ever moving and meandering panoramic synth pads providing an ideal soundtrack for a hot summer evening - indeed well suitable for a day like today on which temperatures in our hometown of Hamburg struck 30°C and beyond - whereas chirping, tweeting and chattering birds alongside seemingly field-recorded soundscapes of rather unclear origin add a rural atmosphere and harmonic bass tone repetitions are evoking memories of distant klaxons being blown over from a port a few miles down the shore with the second part of the journey indulging into even deeper and slightly more nocturnal Ambient atmospheres and therefore presenting somewhat of a return to the roots of the Sound In Silence imprint for those who've been following them over the course of the last decade or so. Lovely.

Meow Meow - Pow Pow [Isope 003]

Put out on the circuit via the Belgian Isope imprint on August 10th, 2k16 is "Pow Pow", the limited to 300 copies label debut for the Dutch artist Meow Meow. Pressed onto beautiful clear x blue splatter vinyl the A-side opens with "Party Like An Owl" and a hounded take on highspeed TribeTekno infused by uplifting rave signals, lovely melodies and driving vocal samples with the subsequent "Shaker" adding elements of Breakcore x DarkJungle and Raggacore to the mix whereas "Survival", a collaboration effort cooked up with Jefflocks, follows a darker path into a realm of Breakcore-infused Unhappy Hardcore for those who know. Furthermore the B1 cut "Mewtant" pairs proper straightforward Hardcore with anthemic Hyperrave stabs and an airy, floating and surprisingly innocent main motif before "Crass" shifts gears and enters what could be well filed under the flag of Speedcore territory for an intense closing climax. Meow Meow vs Jefflocks - Itchy Glitchstitches [Isope 004]

Continuing our backward examination of the Belgian Isope label we're dealing with "Itchy Glitchstitches", the first and only vinyl collaboraton EP cooked up by Meow Meow and Jefflocks. Released on April 3rd, 2k17 the limited to 300 copies six tracker is split into a so-called 'Break Side' and 'Tek Side' with Meow Meow's "Dollfacer" on A1 effortlessly amalgamating Halftime Raggacore, sped up DarkJungle x Breakcore and hefty rave signals followed by Jefflocks' "Murda Dem" which murders crowds with its hounded DarkJungle and chopped up Amen breaks paired with earth shaking subs, catchy Ragga vocals and an absolutely insane stab break down whilst the collaboration effort "Chemical XXX" is on a steppy, complex and slightly Drum'n'Bass-infused high speed tip. The flip caters a set of conjunctional studio efforts, opening with the marvellous HyperRave madness of "Yoshi-Koshi" which is way beyond the next level of greatness and an absolute anthem of a track with the subsequent "Falcon Punch" indulging in highspeed RaveCore, raw oldskool signals and Happy Breakbeat-informed piano sequences as well as eerie synthmospheres before "gRavedigger" brings forth a darker, yet uplifting uptempo Gabber vibe for those who've been around during the inception of the genre in the first half of the 90s. Epic stuff. Get! This! Now!

Joane Hetu - Elle A Son Mot A Dire [Ambiances Magnetiques 282]

Put out on the circuit via the long standing Avantgarde imprint that is Ambiances Magnetiques on June 27th, 2k25 is Joane Hetu's "Elle A Son Mot A Dire", a new album by the widely recognized Quebec-based saxophonist and vocalist turned composer which has been recorded in collaboration with Ensemble Supermusique of and in which Hetu has played a pivotal part ever since it came to life back in 1998. The album, presenting a total of 13 pieces both new and revisited over the course of approx. 52 minutes, engages in haunted, tentative and truly ethereal Ambient x Deep Listening Music with the opening piece "Elle N'a Pas De Mot" before the subsequent "Mot Ella A" brings forth a powerful and absolutely captivating vocal performance by Sarah Albu who is backed by stripped down and slightly ritualistic percussions surely about to resonate with an audience still fond of mid-90s Björk for a reason or two. Furthermore pieces like "Un Ideal" cater super minimalist rhythm signatures topped by ever thickening repetitive vocal layers whereas the intro sequence of "Avoir Le Motton" evokes faint memories of EthioJazz, "Vivante" serves slightly Industrial-infused Avantgarde x Leftfield Pop based on a captivating, intense Spoken Word performance, "Lumiere" enters a grey area between dreamstate and nocturnal unrest with its fluttering vocals and electronic swells whereas "Elle A Dit Oui" ventures off into multi-layered quasi-acappella vocal madness and therefore might be the most suitable score piece for an highly absurd theatrical stage performance, and probably our favorite cut on this album, just to name a few. Quite an interesting a diverse journey, this. Go check!
